PHILOSOPHICAL SELF

ACTIVITY 1

Do you truly know yourself?

Answer the following questions about yourself as fully and precisely as you can.
Write your answer on the space provided after each question and send it to my
messenger or e-mail account.

1. How would you characterize yourself?

I see myself as a strong person. I may not be the strongest but I know that I can do
everything that I want to do. Always giving my best is one of the best things that I should be
proud of. We are all facing a lot of challenges in our lives but, the fact that you are still alive
and doing great in life are the things worth celebrating.

Showing my kindness and sympathy to others can always make me happy and fulfilled.
Supporting my family and friends in their emotional battles can uplift my emotional
happiness too. It is such a great feeling just to see them grow on their own pace.

Always remember that, it is not how other people see you, it is how you see yourself. You
know better than they are. You must believe in yourself and be proud of who you really are.
2. What makes you stand out from the rest? What makes yourself special?

I feel that my own existence makes me unique from others. We all are unique
because we all go through different experiences, and we react differently to them
which make ourselves unique from others. Apologize whenever you are wrong or
whenever you hurt someone, it makes us to stand out from rest. A person’s perspective
is unique in their own way makes special .

3. How is yourself connected to your body?

I am certainly connected to my body through a mind, heart, spirit, emotions, and

other connecting ligaments. These body components are connected with each in
order to function well. Every feeling that i have inside translates and reflects in my
actions.
4. How is yourself related to other self?

Our “self” is related to other selves since they are one of the reason in our self-transformation.
We tend to socialize with others that is why sometimes, we adapt their habits and way of living.
For example, since we were children, we are always with our family. They taught us so many
things and witnessed their way of living from the start, that’s why when we become an adult, we
adapt those things and act depending on how our family raise us up. So that is the reason why
maybe our self is related to other selves.

PHILOSOPHICAL SELF

Activity 2

In your own words, state what “self” is for each of the following philosophers:
Write your answer on the space provided after each question. Submit your answer via
my messenger or email account.
1. Socrates

Self, as understood by Socrates, is the self that is ready to rule over the self. It comes with
the perfection of characters such as justice, love, and intelligence. According to Socrates,
we cannot know ourselves well enough without virtue. He also describes what we should
learn or our life could be empty of knowledge. His ideas clarify that if one has within oneself
wisdom then one does not have anything to envy from others. According correctly to
Socrates self-knowledge leads to good decisions in the acts of ruling others and ourselves
at the same time.

2. Plato

Plato's definition of self is that our soul is the only thing that is unchanging and eternal. The
body is either a shell or a prison to house our soul. Our soul is divine and composed of
virtues — love, courage, wisdom, and many others. According to Plato our soul incarnates
itself into human bodies and experiences human emotions and sensations in order to
strengthen itself by the battle against the lower passions and desires. This dialectic
between our rational soul and irrational body creates the idea of "self" as we know it today.

Before Plato's time, people didn't have such a notion as "self". It was not until he invented it
that such an idea could exist. And now, as we come up with new theories about the nature
of reality, we think that we are discovering something about ourselves, instead of realizing
that we are creating yet another new notion about ourselves.
3. Augustine

In contrast with some modern definitions of self, Augustine sees the self as being open to a
relationship with God. He has two ways of conceptualising the self as radically oriented to
God, namely self-presentation and self-realisation. Augustine’s own life experience led him
to the realisation that in our innermost selves, we were made for God and that nothing less
than God can fulfil the human soul. Aquinas takes this further and sees self-knowledge as a
lifelong quest.

Knowledge of our selves is primarily an innermost thing, but through our interaction with the
external world we learn more about ourselves. His sense of “self” derived from his sense of
God, both recognizing the love God has for his children, and reacting properly to that love,
something achieved though both self-realization and self-presentation.
