Hi Paul,
How was your science test last week? I remember you said you were having trouble
with that subject and were studying a lot for it. Well, last week was good for me. Our
class had a math test. It was easy, and I got an A on it. Also, since we had our
school festival, our teacher didn’t give us much homework.
By the way, my brother is a really good baker, and he owns a bakery in Timbertown.
Next weekend, he is going to take part in a pie-baking contest at Riverfront Park.
There will be about 30 bakers in the contest. The winner will go to the national
contest in Washington, D.C.
During the contest, judges will try a bit of pie from each baker and choose a winner
at the end of the day. Anyone can go to the contest to try some pie, too. It costs $15
to enter and each person gets five food tickets. They then use those tickets to try pie
from five different bakers. I’m planning to go, so call me soon and tell me if you want
to come.
Your friend,
Ellen

The Bajau
In the Pacific Ocean around the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia, there is
a group of people known as the Bajau. In the past, these people did not live on
land. Instead, they spent their whole lives on small boats in the ocean. These days,
many Bajau live in homes built on wooden poles in the sea, but they still spend a
lot of their time on boats. They only sometimes go on land to buy things that they
need.
The ocean is very important to the Bajau. They dive deep into the water to
hunt for fish or collect seaweed to eat. Sometimes they catch extra fish, which they
trade on land for rice, water, and other household goods. They also collect oysters
so that they can get pearls, which they then sell for high prices.
Recent research on the Bajau language shows that the Bajau may have come
from the island of Borneo in the 11th century. However, nobody is sure why the
Bajau originally began to live on the ocean instead of on land. According to an old
story, a princess from Borneo got lost in the ocean during a storm. Her father, the
king, told some people living in his land that they must search for her in the ocean.
He also said that they must not return until they found her. Because the princess
was never found, those people stayed on the ocean forever.
Although the Bajau have a long history of living at sea, their way of life has
started to change. One of the main reasons for this is damage to the environment.
The ocean has become dirtier, and the number of fish is decreasing. As a result, the
Bajau cannot get enough food, so they have to look for other ways to get it. By
protecting the environment, we can also protect the Bajau’s unique culture.
( 37 ) The Bajau need to look for new ways to find food because
1 many young people do not like to eat fish any more.
2 damage to the ocean is causing the number of fish to go down.
3 their culture is changing quickly which makes it difficult to find food.
4 they do not want to hurt the environment of the ocean by catching fish.
