- Bhitarkanika, is the second largest Mangrove ecosystem in India, boasts the largest population of saltwater crocodiles in
the Indian subcontinent. This sanctuary is a biodiversity & home to Indian pythons, Black Ibises, Wild Boars, Rhesus
Monkeys, Chitals, Darters, Cobras, and Monitor Lizards. Additionally, it provides a vital habitat for leopards, fishing cats,
jungle cats, hyenas, spotted deer, sambars & porcupines.

Bhitarkanika is a birdwatcher's paradise, attracting migratory birds from around the globe with its expansive water bodies
and lush mangrove forests. Here, you can spot exotic avian species like Black Kites, Brahminy Kites, White-bellied Sea
Eagles, Kingfishers, Woodpeckers, Brahminy Ducks, and Hornbills among others. The sanctuary hosts around 215 bird
species, including eight types of Kingfishers.

Its 63 diverse mangrove species serve as crucial nesting grounds for migratory birds from Central Asia and Europe. The
flora of Bhitarkanika is equally impressive, featuring Sundari, Thespia, Casuarinas, Teak, Bamboo, Babul, and more. The
sanctuary's aquatic ecosystem is teeming with Illisha, Khainga, Bhekti, and various other fish species. The best time to
explore this natural wonder is between October and March when the weather is pleasant, and wildlife is at its most active.

Crocodiles: The Heart of Bhitarkanika

Bhitarkanika has one of the largest populations of the endangered saltwater crocodile in India and is worldwide popular
for it. Approximately 1784 saltwater crocodiles inhabit the rivers and creeks. Around 3,000 saltwater crocodiles were born
during the 2014 annual breeding and nesting season. A crocodile of Forty-years is named ‘Gori’, hatched and bred by the
Forest Department in 1975 as a part of a crocodile conservation program. It was the first albino crocodile spotted in
Bhitarkanika. A rare albino salt-water crocodile has been recently identified at Odisha’s Bhitarkanika National Park, as
reported by the forest officials. Most tourists are thrilled about the existence of a massive number of breeds of exotic
crocodiles. From only 96 crocodiles in the year 1974 to a wide population of 1768 crocodiles in the year 2021,
Bhitarkanika has become the county’s largest crocodile conservation place. A 23-foot crocodile was discovered to be
present in the year 2006 in Bhitarkanika which was noted as the world’s largest estuarine crocodile in the Guinness Book
of World Records.

Bhitarkanika has a very rich historical and cultural past. A legend suggests that it used to be the hunting grounds of the
King of Kanika. These incidents are beautifully depicted in the present-day sanctuary through artificial hunting towers and
water holes.
