Goal: SWBAT feel a downbeat and start a note on the upbeat

Objective: SWBAT Echo, read, count (using a counting system), and perform
rhythms and rhythmic patterns, including dotted eighth notes, corresponding rests,
and syncopations. (MII.12d)

Materials:
 Teacher: White board and markers
 Students: Instruments, Pencil, Africata

Procedure:
 Students will tap a steady beat with their foot
 Students will raise their foot on the upbeat (they are doing this naturally,
teacher will ask students to think of when they are raising their foot).
 Students will associate the direction their foot is moving with rhythm
examples
o Teacher will draw rhythm examples on the board
o Teacher will ask students whether their foot is moving up or down on
certain notes
o Teacher will ask students whether a new note starts and will draw a big
arrow or small arrow under each note
o EXAMPLES

Assessment
 Students will find a dotted quarter note eighth note rhythm in Africata and
write in arrows with the correct size and direction. Teacher will walk around
class and check for accurate completion
