Objective: SWBAT Echo, read, count (using a counting system), and perform
rhythms and rhythmic patterns, including dotted eighth notes, corresponding rests,
and syncopations. (MII.12d)
Materials:
Teacher: White board and markers
Students: Instruments, Pencil, Africata
Procedure:
Students will tap a steady beat with their foot
Students will raise their foot on the upbeat (they are doing this naturally,
teacher will ask students to think of when they are raising their foot).
Students will associate the direction their foot is moving with rhythm
examples
o Teacher will draw rhythm examples on the board
o Teacher will ask students whether their foot is moving up or down on
certain notes
o Teacher will ask students whether a new note starts and will draw a big
arrow or small arrow under each note
o EXAMPLES
Assessment
Students will find a dotted quarter note eighth note rhythm in Africata and
write in arrows with the correct size and direction. Teacher will walk around
class and check for accurate completion
