e-Portfolio: Timeline/Final Chapter Project

Thesis: six successive, related events including the Affordable Care Act, Marriage Equality,

Presidential Election, Me Too Movement, Covid-19 Pandemic, and Capitol Insurrection have

shaped the nation into what it is today.

1. 2010: The Affordable Care Act: In March 2010, the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known

as Obamacare, was signed into law. This landmark legislation aimed to provide affordable

healthcare coverage to millions of Americans, expand Medicaid, and implement various

healthcare reforms.

2. 2012: Marriage Equality: In June 2012, the Supreme Court of the United States made a

significant ruling in the case of United States v. Windsor. The court struck down the Defense of

Marriage Act (DOMA), granting federal recognition to same-sex marriages and paving the way

for marriage equality across the nation.

3. 2016: Presidential Election: The 2016 presidential election was a pivotal moment in U.S.

history. Donald Trump, a businessman and television personality, won the election against

Hillary Clinton, becoming the 45th President of the United States. This election reflected deep

divisions within the country and marked a shift in political dynamics.

4. 2017: #MeToo Movement: The #MeToo movement gained momentum in October 2017,

following allegations of sexual misconduct against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein. The

movement shed light on the prevalence of sexual harassment and assault, empowering survivors

to share their stories and sparking a nationwide conversation about consent and gender equality.

5. 2020: COVID-19 Pandemic: The COVID-19 pandemic emerged as a global health crisis in

early 2020, impacting every aspect of society. The virus spread rapidly, leading to widespread
lockdowns, economic disruptions, and a significant loss of life. The pandemic highlighted the

importance of public health, scientific research, and the need for international cooperation.

6. 2021: Capitol Insurrection: On January 6, 2021, a violent mob stormed the U.S. Capitol in an

attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. This unprecedented event

underscored the deep political divisions within the nation and raised concerns about the erosion

of democratic norms and the need for unity and healing.

These six successive events, from the passage of the Affordable Care Act to the Capitol

Insurrection, have shaped the nation into what it is today. Each event has had a profound impact

on policy, social attitudes, and the overall trajectory of the United States.

These events have had an impact on my perception of the world. They have made me

more aware of the complexities and challenges we face as a society. It has made me realize the

importance of staying informed, empathizing with others, and working towards positive change.
