DWARF
Dwarf names are usually two syllables but can be one. Less rare
are three syllable names. Most names sound hard as dwarves
have a preference for hard sounds. This is not to mean guttural.
Many dwarves identify themselves with additional information.
The first is about their parentage with a follow-on phrase such
son/daughter of whichever parent had greater status or they
prefer. Another method is by clan association such as ‘Grimr
of Rekkr’s Folk/People.’ The final method is with an epitaph or
nickname.

Several lists are provided. The first list provides single element
names for male and female dwarves as they do not differentiate
naming. The second and third lists each contain syllable that
can be interchanged to create a name. The third list are some
epitaphs that can be attached to dwarven names.

Nicknames and Epitaphs

Often, nicknames or epitaphs are used to name dwarves. These
can be one or two element constructions through are most often
two element constructions. Usually this is done by combining
an adjective with a noun as in Ernmar Ironshield. The following
lists are divided into two sections; adjectives and nouns. Ran-
domly roll one adjective and one noun for the epitaph or chose
on or the other. If a combination does not sound correct, just
roll again until one rolls off the tongue.

THE BOOK OF NAMES 3

ELF
Elven names are simple in nature. Each is unique to the elf and
there is no need for family names or other identifiers (though
they can be used). The names are typically created from a series
of soft syllables. In some names hard syllables are used as accents
to the softer sounds.

Males and females are differentiated by naming conventions.

GNOME
Gnomes have wooden sounding names. There is a combination
of soft and hard syllables. Males and females are differentiated.
There are no family names. As with a few other races, gnomes
will further identify by lineage (son/daughter of) or with an epi-
taph. The epitaphs are not random. The epitaphs are associated
with a particular aspect of the person’s personality, ability, or
even an accomplishment.

HALFLING
Halfing names are usually rather soft and homely sounding.
The consonants are often soft and vowels flow together. Older
names usually end in vowels with more current names ending as
often in consonants. Male and female names are differentiated
and lists are provided below. Family names are important for
halflings and a list is provided for that as well. An ‘older’ nam-
ing method is provided aas well on the last two lists. Combine
elements of one list with another. These names should roll off
the tongue so combine as desired until the name sounds correct.

HOBGOBLIN
Hobgoblin names have one to five elements depending on
their rank. The lowest ranking hobgoblin has a one element
name. As they ascend in power, elements are added to their
name in whatever order they desire. Rank IV names are rare.
Hobgoblins only work from a very small set of words to form
their names. As each of their identities is of little import it is
common to have names repeated. Often, those of rank will try
to kill others of similar rank with the same name just to have
that name as theirs.

8 CASTLES & CRUSADES

HUMAN
Human names are extensive and varied by culture, region, and
dialect. A select few are presented here. Depending on time and
place, family names were not necessary and only personal names
were used. When further identifiers are used, often one names
the location they are from (Tim from Oxley), the job they have
(Robert the Cooper), or the parentage (Brin daughter of God-
win). The latter developed into actual family names. Males and
females are differentiated. Several lists are provided below.

THE BOOK OF NAMES 9
GOBLIN
Goblin names are simple and elegant. They only use two el-
ements. The first element is their ancestral or clan name fol-
lowed by their use name. They are referred to by the second
element and not the first. Often the first element is never spo-
ken but understood. None but goblins know the reason for this.

The first and second elements can be one, two, or three syllables
long. In rare instances they might be longer. Each name can be
broken down by syllable and reformed for a new name or even
start a new ancestral line.

There is no distinction between male and female names.

10 CASTLES & CRUSADES

ORC
Orc names consist of one, two or three elements.

The first element is typically a one syllable word. This word

may or may not have meaning, it could simply be some guttur-
al utterance or related to an adjective or noun. This might be
followed by a second element. Many of the average orcs would
only have a single element for a name but leaders or important
orcs would have two elements.

The second element is usually a two-syllable sound but can be

single syllable. As before it may or may not have a meaning.

The third element is not really a name so much as an affiliative

identifier indicating what tribe, troop, organization, or other to
which the orc belongs. They would only be used when neces-
sary.

There is no distinction between male and female names.

For the first element roll a d10 for the column and then another
d10 for the row. Do the same for the second element, and third
element.

UNGERN
Ungern names are not that varied as their known names are of
little import to them. The legion to which an ungern belongs is
the most important aspect of an ungern’s identity.

Their names are simple yet almost poetic in the brutality of their
speaking, at least to the ears of others. It is rumored ungern
have secret names they use amongst themselves though none
know the truth of this. Their names consist two elements. The
first element is their known name, the second element is the
legion to which they belong.
