Hazard Proof Buildings

Goal: To model, experience and evaluate the management and intervention strategies that countries use to
protect their places from environmental hazards.

Important considerations:
- Decide a country of focus - is it a low income (LIC) or high income (HIC) country?

- Think how earthquakes have affected this country. How well-equipped, in terms of infrastructure is this
country? What key features are needed in your building to help it withstand the possible effects of
earthquakes?

Country: Philippines

Possible effects of earthquakes

Preparedness for earthquakes

Materials & Location:

LIC: - Cardboard
- Tape
- Glue
- Any aesthetic and cosmetic finishes (paint and
exterior design)
- Location: Your building will be built in the
financial district of Makati, Manila
Additional materials: Can bring in one extra thing from
home (But they need planning permission from a
teacher) i.e. so we can say no to ridiculous ideas e.g. a

- Glue
- Pipe cleaners
- Rubber bands/hair ties
- Ping pong balls
- Clips
- Any aesthetic and cosmetic finishes (paint and

- Location: You will have the choice to build your
structure in either Minato, Chuo, or Chiyoda City
in central Tokyo

Building Requirements (applicable to all - Base of the building will be 30cm x 24 cm

buildings): - Model no taller than 30 cm

Planning sheet

Design and Planning

1. Name at least three(3) 3D
shapes that you would use to
construct your building. Cylinder, frustum of pyramid
How will your design protect the
building from natural hazards? Why We choose this shape because cylinder will be the base for be
did you choose this design? more stable at the bottom and 2 frustums of pyramid on the middle
and one on the top.

2. What will be the dimensions of

your building? 3D dimension
Choose an appropriate unit of measure
(m, cm, etc.).
Consider its height, length and width

Note: Your model should not be taller

than 30cm

3. What will be the scale for the

model to the actual building?
Example: 1cm = 10m

4. i) Draw an orthographic
projection of the building.
Include:
- the scale
- Unit measurement of

dimensions (length, height,

width)
- Plan view(top), side view and
front view

Use a ruler to draw straight lines

Draw on graph paper (squared paper)
Be neat!

5. ii) Include a scaled net drawing

of the 3D shapes used in your
building model.
Include:
- Unit measurement of
dimensions (length, height,
width)
- Plan view(top), side view and
front view

Use a ruler to draw straight lines

Draw on graph paper (squared paper)
Be neat!

6. What is the tectonic

environment in your area?
Include:
- Fault lines
- Recent earthquakes in the area
(magnitude, date, estimated
damages)

7. Which intervention strategies

will you use? Why?

Focus on your structure but you may
also discuss a local response plan.
8. What do you think will happen
with your design as the natural
hazard hits?

9. What are some examples of

natural hazard resistant
buildings from around the
world? How can you use these
some of these designs to inspire
your own model?
Include pictures or sketches.
10. How will your plan fit into a
local and national plan to
“Predict, Plan, and Protect”
the area from earthquakes?
11. What actually happened? Were
your strategies effective (record
this after our test):
12. Create a questionnaire to learn
about another group’s
management plan. Evaluate their
plan compared to yours.
Include:
- What did they do?
- Their approach
- What happened to their building
