LESSON 1.

1 NATURE OF HISTORY

NOTE: This is to help students to understand the course as per mandated by Mindanao State University. This is partial and
subject for improvement. The sources that used are mainly coming from authentic books in history. This is just for classroom
purpose only.

WHAT IS HISTORY?
 It is the scientific reconstruction and investigation of human past based on written documents/
records, oral traditions, cultural artifacts, and folk traditions.
History is based on what is written, what is said and what is physically preserved.
1. What is written (e.g. diaries, letters, treatises, records, inscriptions etc.)
2. What is said (e.g. oral literature, oral history through interviews etc.)
3. What is physically preserved (e.g. photographs, forts, old palaces, old structures, landmarks
etc.)
 History is an art and a science which first investigates and then records its causal relation such
past human events; definite in time and place, socially in nature and socially significant.
Etymology or origin of the word History:
 HISTORIE is a latin word which means “inquiry”
 HISTOIRE/ISTOIRE is a greek word which means “investigation”
 HISTOR is a french word which means “wise man”

Importance of History
1. Bridging the Gap Between Present and the Past
2. Explaining Causes of Things and Events
3. Interprets conditions of a given space and time
4. Projecting the Future
5. Promoting Nationalism and Patriotism

WHY WE NEED TO STUDY THE HISTORY?


An examination of the past can tell us a great deal about how we came to be who we are. It means
looking at the roots of modern institutions, ideas, values, and problems.
Looking at the past teaches us to see the world through different eyes-appreciating the diversity of
human perceptions, beliefs, and cultures. Different and/or new perspectives will enable us to analyze
critically the present contexts of society and beings.
