Preamble / Objectives (Optional): To make student understand the fundamentals of several materials
utilized in energy conversion and storage devices along with the industrial fabrication techniques. This
course will also give idea on analytical tools utilized to evaluate the quality of the energy materials.
Materials for energy conversion and storage: silicon, perovskite, semiconductors, composite materials,
carbon, ion-conducting polymers, piezoelectric materials, electrode materials and catalysts for battery,
electrolyzer, and fuel-cells, quantum materials, biomaterials, self-healing materials; Fabrication of energy
materials: phase diagram, nucleation, top down and bottom up approach, thin film deposition
techniques: ALD, CVD; Characterization of energy materials: qualitative and quantitate methods,
principles, and applications of X-ray techniques, microscopic techniques, spectroscopy tools, and
electrochemical methods – potentiometry, amperometry, cyclic voltammetry, impedance spectroscopy.
