Subject: Vice-Presidential Election, 2012- Appointment of Presiding Officer and
Polling Officers.
Sir,
I am directed to invite your attention to rule 9 of “The Presidential and Vice-
Presidential Elections Rules, 1974” and to state that as per sub rule (1) thereof, the
Returning Officer or the Assistant Returning Officer as specified by the Election
Commission will be the Presiding Officer.

2. Accordingly, the Secretary General, Lok Sabha who is the Returning


Officer for the Vice-Presidential Election, 2012 will be the Presiding Officer
for the conduct of poll at the place of polling in the Parliament House.
3. As per sub-rule (2) of said rule 9, the Presiding Officer may appoint such
polling officer or officers as he thinks necessary to assist him in taking the
poll.
4. In order that the poll may proceed smoothly without inconvenience to the
electors, you may distribute to each polling officer, wherever felt
necessary, a separate part of the list of those electors who would vote at the
place for which you are the Presiding Officer.
5. The receipt of the letter may kindly be acknowledged.
