Background of The Document
Origin
Rizal wrote this letter in London on February 22, 1889 in Tagalog. M.H del Pilar
requested to praise the ladies of Malolos for their bravery to establish a school to learn
Spanish, despite the contradictions of Fr. Felipe Garcia, a Spanish parish priest of
Malolos. “Based on accounts, on 12 December 1888, 20 young women from Malolos
petitioned Governor- General Weyler for the establishment of a “night school” to study
Spanish under Teodoro Sandiko, a professor of Latin.
Background Research
The authorities came up with educational policies that were discriminatory
against women who wanted to pursue higher education. The women of Malolos
struggled to disprove the principle that women are destined to be homemakers and
demonstrate that women are at par with men in other fields of endeavors.
