They called New York “the Big Apple”. Maybe it is not exactly like an apple, it’s certainly very
big. There are too many people, that’s the problem. The streets are always full of cars and trucks,
you can never find a place to park.
If you have enough money, you can take a taxi. New York cabs are yellow. They look all the
same. But the drivers are very different. Some were born and raised in New York, but many are
newcomers to the United States. A few drive slowly, but most go very fast. Cab driving is a
difficult job. It can be dangerous, too. Thieves often try to steal the drivers’ money. Drivers
sometimes get hurt.
If you don’t want to take a taxi, you can go by bus or you can take the subway. The subway is
quick and it’s cheap, but parts of it are old and dirty. Lights don’t always work and there is often
fire on the track. On some subway lines, there are new, clean, silver trains. But you can’t see the
color of the old trains easily. There is too much dirt and too many graffiti, inside and outside.

Money is what you use to buy things. You may earn money from completing household chores,
getting good grades, for your allowance, or for losing a tooth! Money is very important in our
world and comes in many different forms
People have been using money for hundreds of years. Before money gave specific values for
things, people simply traded items. In the United States, we use the dollar as our currency or
money, but people in different parts of the world use different currencies, though some countries
also use or accept our dollars.
People earn money from the jobs they work and use that money to save for the future, pay for
their houses, cars, food, taxes, medical needs and household items among other things. Even
things such as turning the lights on, using the air conditioning or heat, and connecting to the
internet cost money.

Dear Matilda
It's been a month I haven't heard from you. I hope you are well. I had a terrible day at school yesterday. My
friends and I were playing volleyball in the school yard when I suddenly fell and twisted my ankle. At first I
didn't feel much pain, but later on it started hurting badly. I had difficulty walking so my friends helped me
around. They took me to a hospital and stayed with me until my mom and dad arrived. The doctor said it was
broken and I needed to rest for a month. We came home last night and 1 feel better now. This incident also
made me realize how valuable friendships are. I don't know what I would do without them. So I want to say I
feel very happy to such good friends like you.

Instructors at American colleges and universities use many different teaching methods. Some instructors
give assignments every day. They grade homework. Students in their classes have to take many quizzes,
a midterm exam, and a final test. Other instructors give only writing assignments. Some teachers always
follow a course outline and usually use the textbooks. Others send students to the library for assignments.
The atmosphere in some classrooms is very formal. Students call their instructors “Professor Smith”,
“Mrs. Jones”, and so on. Some teachers wear business clothes and give lectures. Other classrooms have
an informal atmosphere. Students and teachers discuss their ideas. Instructors dress informally, and
students call them by their first names. American teachers are not alike in their teaching styles.
At most American colleges and universities, facilities for learning and recreation are available to students.
Students can often use recorders, video machines, and computers at libraries and learning centres. They
can buy books, notebooks, and other things at campus stores. They can get advice on their problems
from counsellors and individual help with their classes from tutors. Students can relax and have fun on
campus, too. Some schools have swimming pools and tennis courts. Most have snack bars or cafeterias.

On December 2 2012, two men were finishing a running (1)…………. The race was in
the Navarre community of Spain. One of these runners was Abel Mutai from Kenya.
Mutai is a famous long distance runner. He had won an Olympic medal. During the race
in Navarre, Mutai was winning. He was going to be the first to cross the finish line. But
he made a (2)………….. He thought that the race was over. He stopped running. But he
was wrong. He still had (3)…………… more metres to go to finish the race. Then an
amazing thing happened. The runner behind him slowed down. He showed Mutai that he
had to finish. Mutai was surprised, but he started again. He kept running until he had
crossed the finish line. With help from another man he still won the race! That other man
was a runner named Ivan Fernandez Anaya.
Basketball, football, cycling and (4)…………... These sports are all very different. But
they all have one thing in common. The goal is to be the winner! People who play sports
try to be the fastest or the (5)…………. And when they are able to do this, they win
prizes. The prize may be a round medal to hang around the neck. Sometimes the prize is
money.
People work very (6)………… to make their bodies and minds strong. Sometimes people
even hurt themselves trying to win. Or they hurt other people. People have even broken
the law to win. For example, some people sometimes take illegal drugs such as steroids.
These drugs make people stronger but they are not legal in sports competitions. It is
normal to hear about sports (7)………….. who will do anything to win. So everyone was
very surprised when they heard about Ivan Fernandez Anaya. They were amazed that he
helped another (8)…………. instead of winning himself.
Anaya even won an award for sportsmanship. ICSS, the International Centre for Sport
Security, is a not-for-profit organization. They help make major sporting events safer.
People from around the (9)……….. came to work together for sport (10)………….,
safety and honest behaviour. They hope to encourage sportsmanship. One of the ways
they do this is by giving a “Save the Dream” award. This award is to encourage people to
do positive things that build character and good relationship. In 2013 the ICSS gave the
Save the Dream award to Ivan Fernandez Anaya.
ICSS President Mohamed Hanzab said the Save the Dream award was designed so that
people will discuss good values in sports.
To learn all of these things, you would have to go to many different schools. You would have to pay a lot of
money. But, what if you could learn all of those things for (1)……………..? What if you could learn them all
in one single place? There is one place that a person can learn all of these things - and more. It is the Khan
Academy on the internet. Some people think it is the future of education. Today’s Spotlight is on the Khan
Academy.
Khan Academy aims to provide a free, high quality, education for any person, in any place. The website
includes more than 4,000 short videos, or tutorials. The tutorials (2)…………. about many different subjects.
Each is about ten minutes long. Every month, over 7 million people go to the Khan Academy website to watch
tutorials. Students and teachers from around the world use this (3)…………tool at home and at school.
Khan Academy began with one man named Salman Khan. Khan’s (4)……………. are from Bangladesh and
India. But he grew up in the United States. As a young man, he was a good student. He went to the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology. There, he earned degrees in mathematics, electrical (5)………….., and
computer science. Then, he also earned a degree from Harvard Business School. He began to work in (6)
………….
In 2006, Khan began helping his young cousins with their mathematics school work. He lived far away from
his cousins. So they met over the internet. Khan used a website to draw numbers and pictures. This way his
cousins could see and (7)……………. better. After a time, he put his tutorial videos onto the website
YouTube. There, his cousins could see them any time they wanted. And they could watch them over and over.
But Khan noticed that other people were also watching his tutorials on YouTube.
By 2009, the number of people watching his tutorials on YouTube was getting very large. But Khan was
working at his job. He did not have enough time to help all the people watching the tutorials. They were asking
many questions. And they wanted more new tutorials. Khan wanted to help them. So he decided to make the
tutorials as his job instead. Khan officially began Khan Academy on YouTube. He provided tutorials on
mathematics and other school subjects.
The tutorials often begin with a black, empty screen. Then you hear Khan’s voice. He explains what you will
(8)…………. in this tutorial. Then, he begins writing on the black screen. He uses different colors to write.
And he explains what he is doing.
People did not have to pay to watch the tutorials. But they could give him money if they wanted to support his
work. Some people did give Khan small amounts of money, but he was still struggling. He told radio host
Dianne Rehm about a woman who gave him $10,000. This was enough to support the Academy for several
months. Khan said:
“And then a few months later, I got a text message from the woman who gave me the money. She was at a
conference where Bill Gates was speaking. She texted me saying ‘Bill Gates is on stage right now. He is telling
everyone watching that he uses Khan Academy for his kids. He uses it himself’. That was an exciting and
unbelievable event.”
Bill Gates started the company Microsoft. He is extremely rich. After this talk, his organization, the Bill and
Melinda Gates Foundation, began giving money to the Khan Academy. In 2010 the search engine Google gave
the Academy money too. They wanted Khan to translate his tutorials into the world’s most common languages.
Today, people can see Khan’s tutorials in many different languages.
The Khan Academy began as a simple (9)……………… for Khan to help his cousins. But today, it employs
36 people. It includes tutorials on many different subjects. Khan leads many of the tutorials himself. But other
experts lead tutorials in their own subjects.
Some people think that the Khan Academy will be the way more and more people learn in the future. Teachers
can use it in their (10)………. Khan believes that Khan Academy will never, and should never, replace a
normal school. But he believes teachers and students can use it to make normal school better.
ĐỀ 3 Troll hunters
Once upon a time, there was a quiet country (1)..……... Everyone in the town lived peacefully together. But
there was one problem. Outside the town there was a bridge. Under this bridge lived a troll. He was two times
as big as a human. And he was very (2)…………. He caused a lot of trouble for the people in the town. They
could not cross the bridge without him bullying them. He threw stones at them. He called them bad names.
And worst of all, he would not let them cross the bridge. The troll forced the people to give him money or(3)

they do?
This is the beginning of a story from Northern (4)……….. There are many stories of trolls in this part of the
world.
In modern life, there is another kind of troll: the internet troll. Internet trolls are people who use the internet to
attack other people. Sometimes they use social (5)……….. to insult someone. Often, trolls will target one
person and send them hurtful messages. They sometimes break into people’s private accounts. They use the
information they find there to hurt the person even more. In old stories about bridge trolls there is usually a
solution. People call in strong warriors. The warriors hunt and fight the trolls. But what does internet troll
fighting look like? Today’s Spotlight is on the Swedish television show Troll Hunter.Robert Aschberg is a
famous news reporter from Sweden. He says that his country has a troll problem. About 95% percent of the
