Notes for the Teacher
Your students must solve puzzles to
get clues and find the essential
elements to oranize the most perfect
afternoon tea.

Give one letter per team and one article.

Then, once they’ve read the two documents,
give them the puzzles (one by one or all
together as you wish). You can print the 8
students’ pages as a booklet.

After solving the 5 puzzles they’ll know the 5

elements they need for their afternoon tea.

They’ll have to find a

final code to win!

Whether you’ve studied

the British traditional
afternoon tea or not
prior to the activity, your
students will succeed.

The Afternoon Tea
Challenge
In case you don’t know about the British tradition of
afternoon tea, here is a short article to teach you some key
facts.

A national tradition: The Af♠ernoon Tea

♠erved between 3:30 pm and 5 pm, the British afternoon tea is
lighter than the English breakfast tea. It is accompanied by scones
with cr♠am and jam, sandwiches cut as triangles or fi♠gers. You
can serve biscuits! And you may place toast, muffins or crumpets
next to the cups and saucers.

A British tradition: How to prepare the perfect “cuppa”

First, you need a kettle to boil water. You then have two
possibilities: preparing tea in a teapot or serving tea directly in a
cup. In a teapot, place tea bags or loose leaves in the te♠pot, add
hot water and let tea brew for two to five minutes. In a cup,
place a ♠ea bag, pour water directly from the kettle. And enjoy!

A regional option: A Cream Tea

For an afternoon tea, you can choose a cream tea: some hot tea
without m♠lk, a variety of hot freshly-baked scones, clotted – not
whipped – cream and st♠awberry jam. To respect the tradition,
don’t add butter. In Devonshire, spread cream on scones before
jam; in Cornwall, sp♠ead jam before cream on your scones.

Some Amazing traditions: White tea and Dunking

British p♠ople like their tea with milk. Milk goes first in your cup
if you serve tea from a teapot. Milk goes second in your cup if
you serve your tea directly into a cup. And dunk digestive biscuits
in your tea, but not ♠merican cookies!
