GENERAL INFORMATION ON HARRISMITH:

Harrismith is a large town in the Free State province of South Africa. It is situated by
the Wilge River, alongside the N3 highway, about midway between Johannesburg,
about 275 km to the north-west, and Durban to the southeast. The town is located at
the junction of the N5 highway, which continues westward towards the provincial
capital Bloemfontein, some 340 km to the south-west. This important crossroads in
South Africa's land trade routes is surrounded by mesas and buttes. It is located at
the base of one of these called Platberg (i.e. "flat / flat-topped mountain" in
Afrikaans). Harrismith is an important central place. It receives most of its rain during
the summer and is on the plateau of the interior.

QUESTION 2: MAP CALCULATIONS/CROSS SECTIONS

2.1 1787 − 1672 = 115

1,4 × 1000 = 1400m

1400
= 12,17
115
1: 12,17
2.2 Gradual because with every 12,17 meters you walk forward, you only walk 1
meter up. The contour line are also far apart on the Topographic map.

5
2.3 2023 − 2001 = 22
22 × 8 = 176" = 2°56′
20°28′ + 2°56′ = 23°24′
224° + 23°24′ = 247°24′

QUESTION 3: APPLICATION AND INTERPRETATION

Make use of the map and orthophoto to answer the following questions.

3.1 Harrismith is a high rainfall area. We can see in the Orthophoto map that there is
a lot of lad used for farming.

3.2
 There are boundaries between the farmland and land for other uses.
 The use of grid crop layout is apparent on the orthophoto map.
 The use of large equipment, which is used for commercial farming, is
apparent on the map.
 The farm is built near to a river, which indicates that it is large-scale or
commercial farming.

3.3 Wilge river flows close to a wastewater treatment plant. This increases the risk of
pollution for the river. In the event of the flooding of the water treatment plant, the
river will be at risk of being polluted by the water at the treatment plant. The river is
also very large. In the event of heavy rainfall the river is at risk of flooding the
surrounding areas, creating soil erosion in the dense forest around the river.

3.4 The streets do not all look the same. There are fewer intersections, because of
this the roads are much safer, but it is easy to get lost.

QUESTION 4: GIS

4.1 A geographic information system is a computerized system that creates,

manages, analyses and maps all types of data.

7
4.2 Vector and raster data are commonly used in GIS for spatial representation and
analysis. Vector data represents features with points, lines, and polygons,
maintaining precise geometry and spatial relationships, while raster data represents
features as a grid of cells, suitable for continuous phenomena. Vector data is
organized as individual features with attributes, stored in formats like shapefiles,
while raster data is stored in a matrix-like structure, used for spatial pattern analysis.

4.3 Buffering is a GIS technique that involves creating a zone or area around a
particular geographic feature. Buffering is used for various purposes, such as
assessing the proximity of features or identifying potential conflicts. Buffer zones
around highways are created to mitigate the negative impacts associated with the
road infrastructure. Without proper buffering, the N3 highway may directly encroach
on sensitive environmental areas, such as protected habitats.

4.4 The Orthophoto map 2829AC Harrismith has a high spatial resolution because it
shows more detail than the topographic map and a higher degree in clarity images.
4.5 I would use data collection and analysis to gather relevant spatial data such as
land use, zoning regulations, transportation networks, tourist attractions, and existing
hotels.
