Passage: Saleem: Crime against women in the city is a

becoming a serious problem. Compared to last year,

the police have registered 30 percent more complaints
involving crimes against women, showing that women
of this state are more likely than ever to become
victims of a crime.

Anarkali: Crime against women has been a bane of our

development efforts. With arcane customs like
premarital affairs being a taboo in our country, Sati,
and Dowry, and the overall lower status of women
further exacerbates these crimes. From the last
decade's crime statistics, we see sharp number of
crimes registered under ‗Cruelty by Husband and his
Relatives‘. It also appears that the same category has
had the most dramatic rise over the years. But rapes in
India seem to be the most rampant of all the crimes
against women.
1. Which one of the following, if true, most helps
to resolve the apparent discrepancy pointed by
Anarkali?
(a) No other crime against women has been given
as much attention in the media than rape,
owing to some cases that made international
headlines.
(b) Most complaints of crimes against women by
their husbands and husbands’ relatives never
get closure by the law.
(c) The Sati practice has long been abolished by the
law and no cases have been reported for almost
a decade.
(d) The registration of cases of crime against
women has seen a sharp rise in the last decade
because efforts of NGOs and government–run
awareness campaigns for women.
2. Anarkali responds to Saleem‘s claim by
(a) agreeing with him on the main point of his argument
and then focussing on sub–categories of crime against
women
(b) agreeing with him on his general argument and then
pointing out a specific case in which Saleem‘s argument
may not apply
(c) agreeing with him on some aspects but pointing out a
particular case on which she disagrees with him
(d) initially agreeing with him on the main point of his
argument and later disagreeing with him on a
particular category of crime against women
3. Which one of the following, if true, most
seriously weakens Saleem‘s argument?
(a) The state‘s overall crime rate appears to have
risen slightly this year compared to the same
period last year.
(b) As a result of awareness programmes undertaken
by NGOs and a few media houses, more women
than ever are willing to register complaints of
crimes against them to the police.
(c) There is a surge in the domestic violence cases
against women over the past one year.
(d) The district police commissioner has recently
stated that a relatively small number of repeat
offenders commit the majority of crimes against
women in the city.
4. What should not be done before marriage.
According to passage.
(a) Dowry
(b) Sati
(c) Lower
(d) Affairs
1. Answer: A
Sol. Apparent discrepancy: Crimes registered under ‗Cruelty by Husband and his Relatives, category
have increased sharply and the category itself has seen most dramatic rise over the years but
rapes seem to be the most rampant of all the crimes against women.
Option (B) does not address the discrepancy; it just tells us about the fate of crimes against
women by their husbands and husbands’ relatives. Option (C) is irrelevant. Option (D) talks
about all crimes against women and does not address the apparent discrepancy.
Option (A) explains why despite crimes registered under ‗Cruelty by Husband and his Relatives‘
category rising sharply and the category itself seeing the most dramatic rise over the years, rape
seems to be the most rampant crime against women because of the media attention it gets.
2. Answer: A
Sol. Options (B), (C) and (D) point out a particular case in which either Saleem‘s argument do not
apply or Anarkali doesn‘t agree. But Anarkali‘s argument does nothing of that kind. She just
generally agrees with Saleem and then focuses on how the two subcategories of crimes against
women ‗Cruelty by Husband and his Relatives and rape crimes differ on the kind of media
attention they get.
3. Answer: B
Sol. The premise contains information concerning a rise in the number of registered complaints
involving crimes against women compared to last year. Does the argument say there is more
crime, or does it say there are more registered cases? The conclusion about women being more
likely to be victimized by a crime indicates the author believes the following causal relationship:
Greater number of crimes against women -- more complaints registered. The author believes
that there are more crimes against women and therefore the police are registering more
complaints of crime against women.
Options (A) and (D) have no effect on the argument while Option (C) strengthens the argument.
Option (B) provides a different Cause (more complaints are being registered than before) for
the Effect (rise in the number of registered complaints involving crimes against women).
Therefore, it weakens the argument.
4. Answer: D
Sol. With arcane customs like premarital affairs being a taboo in our country, Sati, and Dowry, and
the overall lower status of women further exacerbates these crimes
