Read and choose the best answer from the questions below.
I didn't think I was afraid of the dark, but then it's not often that I find myself wandering
around a forest at night - on my own. My eyes start to play tricks on me: shadows move
between bushes, insects buzz, a solitary owl hoots, and I'm a little bit lost. What would
Ged Lawless do? Ged is the former soldier who runs the UK Survival School. He's been
teaching me how to find my way at night. This is my first attempt at going it alone. He's
out there in the forest somewhere, and I know that if I start shouting, or call his mobile
number, he'll come and rescue me, but really, that's not why I'm here.
As Ged explained earlier in the day, if you really get lost at night, the most sensible thing
to do would be to stay put until dawn. Apparently, the area underneath a holly bush
provides a good, if spiky, temporary shelter - they're dense, and evergreen. Quite apart
from avoiding the risk of tripping over things, you'd have a better idea of direction –
although you'd be amazed how many people don't know that the sun rises in the East -
or what that means in terms of finding your way. Anyway, I'm slowly getting used to the
forest's spookiness, and I'm not going to admit defeat yet. I'm pretty sure I can find my
own way out. There's always a point in films when a person who's lost in the desert or in
the snow, dehydrated and exhausted, comes across a set of their own footprints and
realises they've just walked in a huge exhausting circle. Apparently, this happens in real
life too. A research study in Germany found that unless people have the sun, the moon
or landmarks to give them a point of reference, this tends to be the case. The
researchers originally thought this was because everybody has one ieg that is slightly
longer or stronger than the other. But scientists now think that's wrong; that lots of
small errors of judgement in the brain stop people from identifying 'straight ahead
correctly without something to help them.If you already know which direction you need
to go in, there are several ways to find this in the dark, and by far the best is to establish
north using the stars. For this you do need to know a bit of basic astronomy, but I
reckon I could manage it. Tonight is very cloudy, however, so I'm not in luck. It is quite
windy though. I remember Ged saying: 'Keep in mind that almost all of our weather
here in the British Isles comes from a south-westerly direction. Unless it's a bitterly cold
wind, in which case it could be coming from the opposite direction.

But tonight we just have a warm breeze, so that tells me which way is south-west. To
double-check, I throw some strands of dried grass up into the air and see which way
they blow. Having set my mind to it, I'm sure I could have made it back to Ged with no
real problem, but unfortunately it wasn't lo be. After about half an hour he starts calling
my name with a note of slight panic in his voice, and I can see his head torch glinting
between the trees in the distance. Remembering his advice for picking such a point and
heading straight towards it, that is what I do.

Miriam Lancewood, from the Netherlands, has a university degree, but she has no
permanent address and no job. She doesn't have a car, or a computer or a mobile phone,
She doesn't have a bed, or a clock or a mirror. And she's very happy this way.
Miriam was living in New Zealand, in 2010, when she began to ask herself: could she
survive a terrible natural disaster or a nuclear attack? Could she live without technology,
electricity or other people? She decided that she didn't have the necessary skills or
experience, so she and her husband Peter set off to live in the wilderness. They left their
cottage, filled two 85-litre backpacks with some possessions and took 12 buckets of food
to last the winter. And they've never looked back.
Since then, they have lived right in the middle of the wilderness of New Zealand's North
Island. They live mostly in a tent or unequipped hut, with occasional returns to a town if
their supplies are low- Lancewood sometimes plays guitar and sings on the street to earn
a little money. Otherwise, they don't need anything from anyone.
In 2017, Miriam published a book - Woman in the Wilderness - which tells her story and
recounts what she learned about nature, other people and herself. Life in the wilderness
taught her how to manage with simple things, how to be alone, how to be bored, how to
be afraid. She also talks about how she had to learn how to use a bow and arrow to hunt
with, and the first time she killed a goat with one. Afterwards, she sat and cried because
she had been brought up as a vegetarian. She and her husband ate the meat, because they
did not want to waste a life and because it provided protein. Meat then became part of
their diet.
Miriam and her husband Peter met in India. They spent two months in the Himalayas,
trekking and meeting people who lived very simply in the mountains. The lifestyle
attracted them both and once they were back in New Zealand, the idea of living in the
wilderness became a possibility and eventually a reality. She does not for one moment
regret choosing this way of life. 'If people don't agree with the way I live, well, it doesn't
matter, does it?' she says.
