Problem 1
For absorption of certain gas from an air steam by water the value of KG was found as 2x10-6
kmol/m2-s-kPa. The absorption takes place at 298 K and at 1 atm pressure at a particular
location of the column the gas phase concentration is 5 mol % and liquid phase concentration
is 0.2 mol %.Only 10 %of the total resistance lies in the liquid phase. The solution obeys
Henry’s law and the value of m=1.5 at 298 K and 1atm. calculate the individual mass transfer
coefficient, flux and interfacial concentration.
Problem 2
From a mixture of gases made up of constituents A and B, the solute A is being absorbed into
the water in a wetted wall column. The mass transfer coeeficient in the gas phase was
determined to be 3.67 kmol/m2 h(bar) and that in the liquid phase was found to be 40 kmol/m2
(mole fraction). At one point in the column, laboratory analysis of the gas sample showed 20
% (mole) A in the gas phase and the liquid sample analyses 5 % mole. The pressure in the
column is 1 bar and the temperature is 293 K. Assume that B is insoluble in water and the bulk
flow effect is negligible. The equilibrium data is as follow:
Mole fraction of A in liquid , xA 0.05 0.1 0.15 0.2 0.25 0.3
Partial pressure of A in gas, pA 0. 0565 0.1035 0.1771 0.2916 0.4680 0.733

(a)Estimate the concentration of A at the interface and rate of absorption.

(b) Determine the overall mass transfer coefficient KG and KX and identify the controlling
factor resistances.
