Student’s Prayer
Dear Lord and Father of all,
Thank you for today.
Thank you for how you provide for us all.
For Your protection and love we thank you.
Help us to focus our hearts and minds now
on what we are about to learn.
Inspire us by Your Holy Spirit as we listen
and write.
Guide us by your eternal light as we
discover more about the world around us.
We ask all this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

of Position
(Quartiles, Deciles, and Percentiles)

What are we going to learn today?
At the end of the lesson, we will
learn to:
✓ define statistics and its types,
✓ illustrates the following
measures of position: quartiles,
deciles, and percentiles.
What is STATISTICS?
➢ A branch of mathematics that deals with the:

collection
organization DATA
A set of values that represent
presentation measurements or observations.

analysis to come up with a

interpretation useful and meaningful
conclusion.
BRANCH OF STATISTICS
➢ Descriptive Statistics is used to
describe and summarize collected
sample data through numerical
calculations, and graphical and
tabular representations.
BRANCH OF STATISTICS
➢ Inferential Statistics aims to
make interpretations by making
conclusions about the population
based on the result derived from a
data set.
MEASURES OF CENTRAL TENDENCY

➢ The measure of central tendency is

the descriptive summary of a data set.
➢ The measure of the central tendency of
the dataset can be found using the three
important measures namely mean,
median, and mode.
MEASURES OF POSITION
➢ Measures of position include dividing
the data into four parts, ten parts, and a
hundred parts of equal sizes. The
corresponding partition values are
called quartiles, deciles, and
percentiles.
MEASURES OF POSITION
Consider the midpoint of two
numbers a and b on the number line
𝒂+𝒃
is .
𝟐
Consider this!
Ten students are lined up in a row. If John
is the 3rd tallest student, what does it mean?

John

70% of the students are shorter than John.

20% of the students are taller than John.
WHAT IS A QUARTILE?
➢ Divides ranked scores into four equal parts,
using three quartiles.

𝟏 𝟏 𝟑
𝑸𝟏 = (𝒏 + 𝟏) 𝑸𝟐 = (𝒏 + 𝟏) 𝑸𝟑 = (𝒏 + 𝟏)
𝟒 𝟐 𝟒

Note: n is the total number of items in the distribution

• The difference between 𝑸𝟑 and 𝑸𝟏 is the

interquartile range.
WHAT IS A DECILE?
➢ Divides ranked data into ten equal parts.

𝑸𝟐 = 𝑫𝟓

WHAT IS A PERCENTILE?
➢ Percentiles are the ninety-nine scores which
divides the data into hundred equal parts.

𝑸𝟐 = 𝑫𝟓 = 𝑷𝟓𝟎 = 𝟓𝟎%
𝑸𝟑 = 𝑷𝟕𝟓 = 𝟕𝟓%
𝑸𝟏 = 𝑷𝟐𝟓 = 𝟐𝟓%
