ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY

LITTLE FIRES EVERYWHERE

GRADE 10

What is an Argumentative Essay

The standard argumentative essay is meant to argue a writer's position, otherwise called
a stance or belief, on a subject. The standard argumentative essay consists of five
paragraphs: an introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The introduction
of an argumentative essay should include background information that contextualizes a
topic for the reader and a thesis that succinctly explains the essay's position. Body
paragraphs introduce argumentative points related to the thesis (the main
argumentative point of an essay) and must be supported by evidence and original
commentary. Body paragraphs also include counters, reasoning/information/evidence
from a position contradictory to that of the argumentative essay. All argumentative essays
benefit from the inclusion of counterarguments, positions that differ from that of the
author, and evidence, facts and data from authoritative sources that support the
reasoning of the essay.

What are the main parts of an argumentative essay?

The main parts of an argumentative essay are the introduction, body, and conclusion. The
introduction introduces a topic and the essay's thesis. The body of an argumentative
essay should introduce evidence and commentary that supports the essay's thesis. Each
of the three body paragraphs should introduce a new argumentative point. The
conclusion synthesizes all of the information included in the argumentative essay.

How do I write an argumentative essay?

To write an argumentative essay begin by researching a topic. Research is needed to help
a writer understand the context of a subject. Once a writer understands the context of a
subject, they can develop an arguable position on the subject. Conduct additional
research to support the argued position, making sure to acknowledge counterarguments.
Communicate the findings of your research and the impact of your position by using
logical arguments based on authoritative facts.
