Business Proposal for Mushroom Production

I. General Information

Project Title: Mushroom Farming

Project Location: P-1 Bariw,Malinao,Albay
Total Project Cost: 30,000.00
Project Coordinator/owner: Eula C. Belason

II. Rationale

Mushrooms are called ‘white vegetables’ or ‘boneless vegetarian meat’

containing 20-35% protein (dry weight) which is higher than those of
vegetables and fruits and is of superior quality. It is considered ideal
for patients of hypertension and diabetics. Oyster mushrooms
(Pleurotus sp.) can be grown on variety of crop refuses, saw dust,
bagasse (a waste product from sugar mill), sludge (a waste from
paper pulp mill) etc. Processing of agro-waste in to valuable protein
rich food reduces the environmental pollution and its byproduct
as spent mushroom is also a good source for making compost,
manure, soil conditioner and can be used as feed for animal and fish.
Paddy straw and banana leaves are also available in the vicinity of the
Campus which can be effectively utilized as substrate (growing
medium) for mushroom cultivation.

Oyster mushroom cultivation as cottage industry has potentials

as a high-value crop in the province of Albay. For round the year
cultivation the agri-climatic conditions are very conducive with modest
temperature (25-30°C) and relative humidity (70-90 %).There is huge
demand of canned, dried and fresh mushrooms and can get handsome
price from sale of fresh and dried oyster mushroom. There is great
demand of fresh mushroom in local market for consumption of tourist
in hotels. Apart from fresh consumption of mushrooms it can be
exported as organic brand in dried form.

III. Objectives

This project aims to:1. Produce 200 kilograms of mushroom2.

Sustain production for three (3) years with 60% growth every year3.
Serve as showroom for sustainable yet profitable agricultural
enterprise4. Provide additional income for the university5. Conduct
research and development endeavors pursuant to the improvement of
the project.

IV. Project Components and Activities

A. Preparation of Pure and Sub starter Culture

Preparation of Pure Culture will be done by inoculating sterilized

culture media (potato dextrose agar) with sucrose as alternative to
dextrose with tissue from healthy mushroom. Sub starter culture will
be prepared by adding mycelium from pure culture to sterilized
sorghum seeds.
B. Construction of Cropping Shed

A cropping shed with dimension of 6m x 2.5m x 2.5m made up

of nipa pawid surrounded by plastic/Net cover and nipa or liplip walls
for maintenance of humidity will be constructed. Nylon ropes for
holding fruiting bags will be installed as well as steel drums outside the
shed for sterilization of the fruiting bag.

C. Preparation of Fruiting Substrate and Installation

A mixture of rice bran, soaked and dried saw dust, lime and
molasses in recommended proportion will be prepared and packed in
polypropylene bags rimmed with PVC pipes. The bags will be subjected
to sterilization. the bags will be further inoculated with sub
starter culture of sorghum seed.

D. Harvesting

Harvesting will be done by rubbing off mature fully grown

mushroom. Under developed and small primordial will be rubbed off
the substrate.

E. Maintenance

Humidity and temperature shall be regularly monitored by

spraying water on nipa walls and roof and inside the shed.
