ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all those who helped me to complete this
project successfully.

First and foremost, I would like to thank our instructors, ( Er. Barsha Thapa Magar, Er.
Gobinda Gautam and Jr. Er. Pradip Upadhaya), for their constant support, valuable guidance
and encouragement throughout the process and in observation Jhimruk Hydropower Plant.

I would also like to extend my thank to our school principal, (Mr. Shalikram Dangi) and our
co-ordinator (Er. Barsha Thapa Magar) for providing all the necessary facilities required for
this project and organizing Jhimruk Hydropower Plant Observation for this project.

Finally, I would like to thank my family and all supportive friends who motivated me and
boosted our morale when I was stressed.

Jhimruk Hydropower Plant
INTRODUCTION:
Hydropower plant is the project that diverse the flowing water or falling water to the
turbines of generators through penstock from high head and produced electricity.
Hydropower electricity is the energy produced from generators driven by turbines that
convert the kinetic energy of falling or fast flowing water into mechanical energy. This
energy is also known as Hydro-electric power.
Jhimruk Hydropower plant is under operation since 1994 with an installed capacity of
12MW. The power plant has 3 Horizontal Francis turbines of 4 MW capacities each. This
project was also built under the aegis of UMN. The powerhouse is semi-underground and is
located on the bank of the Madi River. The Jhimruk power plant is also a basin transfer plant
wherein water from Jhimruk River is drawn and after generation of power is discharged into
Madi River.
The power generated by the plant is being transmitted to NEA 132 kV substation at
Lamahi through 41 km 132 kV line. It also supplies power to local NEA’s consumers in
Pyuthan, Rolpa and Arghakhachi Districts in addition to its own consumers in these districts.
The project was financed by NORAD through UMN and Government of Nepal. It was
owned and operated by Butwal Power House Company (BPC).

THEIR FUNCTIONS:

1. Radial Gate: It regulates the water out flow by rolling up entirely.

2. Unit Gate: It controls the flow of water during maintenance.
3. Tunnel Gate: It allows the water from intake at dam site to power house for
generation of hydro electricity.
4. Francis Turbine: It helps to generate hydroelectricity by converting kinetic energy of
water into mechanical energy.

OBJECTIVES:
 To know about the components of hydropower.
 To know about the different mechanism of the hydropower project.
 To know the required criteria of the hydropower plant.

Advantages:
 Supply electricity to the NEA and nearest district
 Help in irrigation
 Help in providing safe drinking water facility

Disadvantages:

 It can alter aquatic habitats.

 It may require the expropriation of land.
 It can change the quality of water.
 It may cause problems in irrigation to the land downstream the dam.

OUTCOMES/ LEARNINGS
Students are able to explain about the components of the hydropower plant. Students know
the age of the machinery of the hydropower plant. Jhimruk Hydropower plant observation
helps the students to know about the process of the hydropower plants. Turbines are changed
every year because of the damage by sand/ silt. In each generator, there is cooling mechanism
to protect it from overheating.

SUMMARY:
Students are able to know about the components and working mechanism of the hydropower
plants. We are also able to know the age of machinery and its maintenance period along with
the maintaining process keeping the generation in process.
