Jar Golden Rules

• Placing a jar in tension eliminates the risk of premature firing. If running in compression, follow guidelines to
Tension is always preferred. avoid accidental firing InTouch ID 7800465
• Placing more hammer mass above the jar (required for compression) may mean lower impact/impulse
(Mainly in vertical/ low inclination) • In low inclinations the pipe tends to buckle in compression generating more bending stresses at the jar

No jar or accelerator should be ran in neutral • The real damaging effect of placing a jar in neutral is the lateral whipping effect due to lack of tension. Not the
position opening/closing due change in compression/tension.
• This whiplash effect is worst at lower inclinations.
(hydraulic/mechanical/hydromechanical)

• It is more important to match a jar (±0.5”) to the HWDP (TJ OD)/DC that will surround it to avoid excessive
Jar is selected based on HWDP/DC size; stresses.
then checked for hole size limitation • Jars have hole size limitations; check specifications and place exemption if needed.

• Jars do not have sensors to indicate the shock and vibration they have been exposed to. If other BHA

Jarring with trapped torque is not • Jarring (specially up) with trapped torque may lead to the uncontrolled release of stuck pipe with trapped torque.

These rules are applicable to any SLB jar in any BHA or any jar in an SLB BHA.
