activities provided in this lesson will help you learn and understand:
Analyzing the Stand of the Speaker Based on the Explicit Statement
Made.

After completing this module, you are expected to:

1. Analyze the stand of the speaker based on explicitly stated ideas;

2. Use textual evidence to support the analysis of what is explicitly
stated in the text.

PRETEST
Citing Textual Evidence: Read the passage then answer the questions that
follow. Write the letter of the answer on the space before the number.

The definition of bullying is when an individual or a group of people with more

power, repeatedly and intentionally cause hurt or harm to another person or
group of people who feel helpless to respond.

While the bullying definition is broad and can occur in a variety of environments
it usually is a relationship problem and requires relationship -based solutions.
Those who bully are more likely to feel like their friendships and family
relationships aren’t very secure. They are more likely to feel like those who are
closest to them make them do things that they don’t feel comfortable doing and
aren’t very supportive or loving.

Let’s look at some hard facts that occur as a result of bullying. Suicide is the
third leading cause of death among young people, resulting in about 4,400 deaths
per year, according to Canada statistics. For every suicide among young people,
there are at least 100 suicide attempts. Over 14 per cent of high school students
have considered suicide, and almost seven per cent have attempted it.

Don’t define yourself through the misfortunes of others — because if that is the
description by which you are defining yourself you are not just at risk of becoming
a bully to other but you are also at risk of becoming a bully to yourself! Be the
change you want to see today. Because the best time to make a difference is
RIGHT NOW!

-Angelina Dukic’s speech on bullying

RECAP

We have learned that analytical listening is the ability and the capacity
to properly analyze what is being said. This not only means understanding
what the other person is saying and what they mean to say, but also being
able to divide difficult questions into separate parts in order to get to the core.
The objective of analytical listening is to quickly see logical connections, as
well as detecting possible gaps in all the information.

In addition, we have also learned the importance of developing our

analytical listening and how to employ this skill in making
predictions/projections.

LESSON

Examine the following pictures of people taking a stand. After

thoroughly analyzing each picture, answer the questions that follow:

8
1) What can you say about the pictures?
2) What does it mean to take a stand?
3) What are some of the issues people take stand for today?

Taking a stand means discussing the opposing viewpoint and offering

valid reasons for why that particular perspective is incomplete or wrong.
Taking a stand doesn’t mean absolute authority, either. Because taking a
stand involves considering other perspectives and examining them critically,
the original stance sometimes morphs. It evolves into a more fully-formed
understanding and position.

Some issues people would take a stand for:

1. Taking stand for the protection of the environment

2. Taking stand for women’s rights
3. Taking stand for the workers
4. Taking stand for freedom of the press
5. Taking stand for artistic freedom
6. Taking stand for the right of free health care
7. Taking stand against child labor
8. Taking stand for the truth
9. Taking stand for free quality education
10. Taking stand for the right to suffrage

The point with taking a stand is not to neglect the opposing argument;
far from it. Taking a stand means discussing the opposing viewpoint and
offering valid reasons for why that particular perspective is incomplete or

9
wrong. Taking a stand is a position held with both eyes open, not with both
shut, one closed, or one held in a continual winking state.

As speaker, presentation of your stand could become easier when you

have a personal connection with the topic you have chosen and when you can
explicitly talk about your ideas. When you can explicitly state your ideas
misinterpretation would be avoided. Remember, to generate ideas in your
freewriting, you may also think about readings that you have enjoyed or that
have challenged your thinking. Doing this may lead your thoughts in
interesting directions.

It is important to know how to analyze the stand of a speaker or a

group of people in order to understand their respective point of views or

perspective regarding the topic that is being talked about. It is vital to have a
depth knowledge about this to avoid conflict, discriminating comments and
irrelevant opinions that may insult the other party.

Likewise, being able to identify the purpose of a text and to develop a

deeper understanding of the material you’re reading through explicit
statement is equally important. Look for direct statements that reveal
perspective. Sometimes, a writer will make direct statements that reveal his
or her opinions and beliefs about a topic.

Remember, explicit information is clearly stated, leaving nothing

implied. For example, the phrase “it was a dark and stormy night,” uses
explicit information that leaves no room for debate. The reader cannot
assume, by any stretch of the imagination, that the story is in fact taking
place on a sunny morning.

In this examples, the word explicit is used to demonstrate something

that has been clearly and unambiguously expressed or stated. There is no
room for doubt because everything is clearly and directly communicated.
10
When something is stated explicitly, this means the exact meaning of
something is clearly stated. The meaning should be clear and obvious to
anyone reading the statement. Stating things explicitly is often important in
professional settings, such as in the workplace, a hospital, or in the
classroom.

In addition, understanding the innate difference between a fact and an

opinion is vital in analyzing the speaker’s stand. The purpose of any form of
writing or any form of expression can hide the difference between facts and
opinions very subtly. It can help you better understand the objective if you
take all accounts on the matter into perspective. Facts are fully verifiable and
there is no argument as to whether they are valid. This is where scientific
research comes into play. Facts when used properly in context can help us
draw strong conclusions and give our work meaning. Opinions are based on
judgement and can be plagued with bias. Beyond look at facts, we can make
our judgement on a piece based on who put it together. As a communicator
yourself, you will see that while people are entitled to their own opinions, they
cannot have different facts. Facts exist independently of what anyone thinks.

ACTIVITIES

Activity 1

Recognizing the explicit: Choose the best answer based on the short passage.
Encircle the letter of the answer.

Yes, we need laws to govern us, but the law itself cannot change people’s
behaviors and mindsets. They set policies that are meant to inspire. Leaders
and community members give life to these policies.

As a long-time environmental advocate, I know how hard it is to

convince people to protect our environment. People act when there is threat

11
and fear; but that is not how we should live. People need to be inspired and
feel that they are part of a shared cause.

Thirty years ago, we were panicking over ozone layer depletion. But the
positive signs that the ozone layer is starting to heal prove that when nations
unite and work together, we can fight even such a great challenge. This should
inspire us now as we address the climate crisis.

We live in only one planet and by now climate change should make us
realize that we are all connected and we suffer the consequences of this crisis
together. This is not the time for restraint; this is not the time to wag the finger
of indictment; this is not the time for apathy and indifference. This is the
moment for collective and urgent climate action.

If we start today, there is no promise that we will be lucky enough to

see the undoing of the damage within our lifetime, but at least, we leave our
world, we leave our children and grandchildren with the gift of hope for a
better, kinder future.

1. Which paragraph contains the speaker’s stand on the topic?

A. First paragraph
B. Second paragraph
C. Third paragraph
D. Last paragraph
2. What is the speaker’s main objective in giving this speech?
E. to inform

Pollution is one of the biggest challenges faced by the world today. All
the countries are adopting more and more laws on pollution reduction. Still,
governmental actions cannot guarantee the complete elimination of this
problem. The main thing is to make all the ordinary people understand the

12
importance of this issue and to make them respect the environment they live
in.

The main types of pollution are water pollution, air pollution, soil
pollution and sound pollution. All of them are harmful to people’s health. The
latest technological advances have been often making people forget about the
existing problems. Use of many different fertilizers and other chemicals in
agriculture and other food industries can cause serious illnesses though, and
we should never forget about that.

Increase in the number of vehicles in cities is one of the main reasons

for air pollution. The engines emit carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide which
are very harmful both for health and the atmosphere.

It is about time everyone woke up and worked as a single cohesive unit

against the pollution. Being aware of its bad effects has to be more than
enough to work on pollution reduction. Planting more and more green plants
is a very good option to bring back the resource-use equilibrium. No matter
what the governments do, the main action should come from people. This is
the only way to stop the spread of pollution from destroying our home.

3. What is the speaker’s main objective in giving this speech?

A. to inform
B. to entertain
C. to persuade
D. to compare and contrast
4. What is NOT an explicit statement on pollution?
A. Pollution is one of the biggest challenges faced by the world today.
B. The latest technological advances have been helping people
fight the existing problems on pollution.
C. Increase in the number of vehicles in cities is one of the main
reasons for air pollution.
D. The main types of pollution are water pollution, air pollution, soil
pollution and sound pollution.

13
5. What is the main stand of the speaker on the problem?
A. All the countries should adopt more laws on pollution reduction.
B. It is about time everyone woke up and worked as a single cohesive
unit against the pollution.
C. The latest technological advances should be used in solving our
problems on pollution.
D. Invent vehicles with engines that do not emit carbon dioxide and
carbon monoxide.

from the list below. Write the letter of the answer on the space before the
number.

A. time order C. comparison/contrast

B. items in a list D. cause and effect
E. definition and example
_____ 1. The construction of federally subsidized highways and the shortage
of housing in central cities led to the movement to the suburbs.
_____ 2. While some birds meet only to mate, others stay together and share
in the child rearing.
_____ 3. Propaganda is information of any type, whether true or false, that is
designed deliberately to persuade an audience to adopt a particular point of
view. Advertising is an obvious form of propaganda.
_____ 4. A good study space is well-lighted and well supplied with paper, pens,
and study aids. In addition, it is quiet and free from distractions such as
television or stereo.
_____ 5. To begin word processing, first turn on the computer. Next, insert the
master editing diskette into Drive A. Then put a blank, formatted disk into
Drive B and get ready to write.

Activity 3
Fact or Opinion: A fact is something that is true and can be proven. An opinion
is your feelings or how someone else feels about a particular topic.

14
Read each statement. Determine if the speaker’s stand is a fact or
opinion. Write your answer on the line.

_______1. When a student cheats, he reveals two things about himself. In

getting help from another student, he proclaims that someone else is more
competent than himself; in addition, the cheater shows his perfectionist
tendency by suggesting that he is being measured against unrealistic
standards.

_______2. The Filipinos are so enthusiastic about their Instagram and

Facebook that they were ranked as THE highest selfie-takers in the world
by Time Magazine! In this study, Makati City (Manila) was crowned the selfie
capital of the world, with 258 selfies taken per 100,000 people. Further down
the list is Cebu City ranked in 9th place followed by Quezon (also in Manila)
at #59 and Iloilo City at #72.

_______3. The adolescent attitude towards study is that it is a task to be

avoided if at all possible. At best it is an unpleasant chore. It is begun under
duress and escaped as soon as the opportunity presents itself. The mark of
truly adult learning, however, is that it is done with no sense of being forced.
It is entirely voluntary and carried on with a sense of enjoyment and
satisfaction.

_______4. The Asian population grew by more than 45 percent from 2000 to
2010—a rate faster than any other major race group—according to the U.S.
Census Bureau. And the South Asian American population grew at an even
faster pace—78 percent over the past decade. From 2000 to 2010 the Asian
population increased by 30 percent or more in every state except Hawaii,
according to the 2010 Census.

_______5. Frequent moves made by the average Filipino family put a strain
upon young people, who often grow up feeling they have no real home and
that they owe no allegiance to anyone; consequently, crime and other social
problems have increased in recent times.

15
Activity 4

Discuss one topic from the list below. Do the activity in your notebook.

1. What have you taken a stand on in the past? Write what it is all about.
Cite explicitly your ideas to support your stand.

2. What injustice do you see in the world today that you would like to take a
stand on? Write explicitly what you would do to have your voice heard?

3. What motivates people to take a stand today?

What qualities or characteristics does someone have to possess in order
to “take a stand”? Why do you say so? Explain explicitly in a short
paragraph.

WRAP-UP

The following are the things I have learned about the lesson:
___________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________

VALUING

Sometimes, stating something clearly can be the best way to make your
point. This can be true in fiction, but it is especially true in essays and reports.
You want to use explicit information and facts in scientific and non-fiction
writing because it is clear and unmistakable. You don’t want your reader to

16
have to guess your meaning. Same with news and happenings nowadays, it
is very important to provide explicit information in news, social media post
and anything that peoples need to know to avoid guessing game and
confusion.

POSTTEST

Read the passage carefully then answer the questions that follow. Write the
letter of the answer on the space before the number.

Why Southeast Asia is the Best Tourist Destination

So, what makes Southeast Asia a tourism option you should

consider? The first reason is the prices all across the region: they are
ridiculously low. One of the first problems a backpacker needs to solve after
arriving in a new country is accommodation. In Southeast Asia—almost
everywhere—accommodation is so cheap that for the money a tourist would
spend on a hostel in Europe for one week, in this region, he or she could
live one month! See for yourself: if you go to Cambodia or Laos, a place in
a dorm room would cost you somewhere between $2-5 per day. A night in
a Vietnamese hostel will cost you $8-10. Thailand is probably the most
expensive on the list, with prices between $6-13.

1. What pattern is used by the speaker in the explicit sentences

in the paragraph?
A. time order
B. comparison/contrast
C. cause and effect

D. definition and example

2. What is the stand presented by the speaker?

A. Compare prices when you travel.
B. One of the first problems a backpacker needs to solve in
arriving in a new country is accommodation.

C. Southeast Asia is the best tourist destination.

17
D. Thailand is the most expensive on the list of prices.

Poverty in the Philippines is a major obstacle to the success of the

Filipinos and we can say that poverty is a very serious problem. In fact, it is
a crisis.

The National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) reported that

poverty incidence in the Philippines hits 26.5 percent in 2009. A total of 23.1
million Filipinos, about a third of ninety million populace are still subsisting
on below 2 us dollars per day, or if you will convert it to Philippine peso, less
than 100 pesos per day. This is considered the highest poverty in Southeast
Asia.
I said earlier that it would be far off from reality that poverty would be
solved, why? Because first, we should identify the cause of poverty and from
there it would be solved. So what do you think the cause ladies and
gentlemen? Is it overpopulation? Unemployment? Pollution? Lack of
education? Poor governance? Or is it corruption? Ladies and gentlemen all of
these are the causes and who should we blame? Who do you think we should
blame? The government? Yes, certainly it is. But whose more to blame are the
citizens. Yes it is us. Every Filipino, every people are to blame and why it is
us? Just imagine if all people have proper discipline, what would our country
would be? A nice, clean, peaceful country. Who wouldn't want to see a
Philippines like that? No pollution, less crime, no corruption. For only if its
people are disciplined, the politicians, the workers, professionals, students,
the old ones and even kids, this country could be developed and fight for
poverty.

In my point of view, we should first start from changing ourselves before

blaming others for this country’s poverty. I certainly believe that Filipinos can
fight poverty because as Bill Cosby said “You can turn painful situations
around through laughter. If you can find humor in anything, even poverty,
you can survive it. “

3. What can you say about the speaker’s stand in the last paragraph?

A. opinionated
B. neutral
C. biased
D. indifferent

18
4. Which opinion marking signal is explicitly used in the text?

A. I believe that …
B. I strongly agree that …
C. In my point of view…
D. I think that…

5. Which statement supports the speaker’ stand that poverty

is a serious problem?

A. Every Filipinos are to be blamed.

B. A total of 23.1 million Filipinos are still subsisting on
below 2 US dollars per day, or if you will convert it to
Philippine peso, less than 100 pesos per day.
C. Lack of education is the main reason.
D. Poor governance and corruption should be blamed
more.
