Lesson Title

I. Background Information

The Simple Past Tense

The Past Tense is used to express the following:


1. A definite completed action in the past. Time expressions such as in the past,
the day before, yesterday, recently, in 2020, a little while ago, an hour ago, this
morning, when I was born, one week ago, last week, last month and others are used
to indicate past time.
Our country experienced a long drought last year.
2. A habitual or repeated action in the past
However, a month ago, it rained almost every day.
3. A condition or situation in the past
Mrs. Grey owned a bakery.
She seemed to lose hope for rain to come.

4. An event with duration in the past.

Mrs. Grey managed the shop for 20 years.


Her husband tended their farm for almost three decades.

The past tense forms of verbs go with any noun or pronoun subject. Not all verbs
have past forms ending in –ed.

Regular verbs are verbs whose past form end in –ed.
