allowing them to manage their own learning at home. Furthermore, you are
expected to encourage and assist the learners as they do the tasks included
in the module.

In this module, you will study how to interpret measures of position. This
give us a way to see where a certain data point or value falls in a sample
or distribution. It helps us gives conclusions or recommendations to a
particular result of the data being examined or tested.

Measures of Position are being discussed in the previous module. The


activities in this section will help you answer the question and how to interpret the
result of a given set of data.

Imagine that you are the fourth tallest among your 20 classmates.
What does it imply?
Guide questions:
1. How many are shorter than you?
2. How many percent is shorter than you?
3. How many are taller than you
4. How many percent is taller than you?
5. If Ana is the 2nd Quartile, how many are shorter than her?

Quantiles are a useful tool in statistics. We use them to summarize a group


of numbers. For instance, if we have a big list of numbers, we simply focus on few

numbers. Intuitively speaking, ‘quantile’ means that the sample is divided
into equal–sized parts.

From the previous module, the measure of position can be illustrated this way.

The result of measures of position can be interpreted using their equivalent


percentage.

Examples:
1. Ages of 11 children in the community.

50% of the children in the community are 6 years old or younger.
75% of the children in the community are 9 years old or younger.

2. In a 50-item test, your score belongs to the third quartile. What does this
mean?
Answer: This means that you got 75% correct answers in the said test.

3. Ms. Kim is a secretary in one big company in Davao City. Her salary is in
the 7th decile. Should Kim be glad about her salary or not?

Answer: 70% of the employees receive a salary that is less than or equal to
her salary and only 30% of the employees receive a salary that is greater
than her salary. Ms. Kim should be happy with her salary.

4. In a 50-item test, your score belongs to the third decile. What does this
mean?

Answer: This means that you got 30% correct answers in the said test and
70% of them are wrong.

One way also of interpreting the data is knowing its percentile rank.

Percentile Rank

A percentile rank describes the percentage of people in the comparison group


who scored below a particular score. Percentile Rank is a usual term mainly used
in statistics which arrived from Percentile. Percentile Rank is arrived based on the
total number of ranks and the number of ranks below and above percentile.
For example, if a student’s score of 73 corresponds to a percentile rank of 96,
that student performed better than 96% of the other test-takers.

To identify the Percentile Rank (PR) of score x, out N where x is included.

certain university. The determining factor for a senior high scholarship in the
university is a student’s score should be in the top 10% of the scores of the
examinees. Will they receive a scholarship?

In this lesson, you’ve learned the different types of measures of position and
how to interpret particular measure of position.
Quartiles divide the distribution into 4 equal parts and can be interpreted as:
𝑄# , 25% of the distribution is lower or equal to the first quartile.
𝑄$ , 50% of the distribution is lower or equal to the second quartile
𝑄' , 75 of the distribution is lower or equal to the third quartile

The deciles are 9 values which split the data set into 10 equal–sized parts
while the percentiles are 99 values which split the data set into 100 equal–sized
parts.
