3. Industry Readiness: Students develop insights into industry standards and innovative practices,
equipping them with the necessary skills for successful integration into the workforce.

Detailed Report:
On 18/3/24, a hands-on workshop on fiber splicing and Optical Time Domain Reflectometer
(OTDR) operation was conducted from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm for final year Bachelor of Engineering
(BE Sem VIII) students of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering (EXTC) for the subject
of Optical Fiber Communication and Networking. The workshop was facilitated by Mr. Nilesh
Nikam and his team from Aditya Infotech, Mumbai.

The workshop commenced with a demonstration by Mr. Nilesh Nikam and his team on fiber
splicing techniques. In groups of 10 students, participants were guided through the process of
stripping, cleaning, and cutting fiber ends to prepare them for splicing. They were then given hands-
on experience using fusion splicing machines, learning about fiber alignment and the fusion splicing
process. Students were encouraged to splice fibers on their own under supervision, gaining practical
skills in fiber splicing techniques. Additionally, they were instructed on how to properly apply
protection sleeves to the spliced fibers to ensure durability.

Furthermore, participants were introduced to fiber cabling, where they learned about the importance
of fiber protection and color coding for individual fibers. This provided them with insight into
industry practices for maintaining organized and efficient fiber networks.

In the latter part of the workshop, students were familiarized with OTDR equipment and its working
principle. Mr. Nilesh Nikam and his team explained the functionality of the OTDR, its role in
testing optical fibers, and interpreting the obtained results. This segment aimed to deepen students'
understanding of network deployment, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

Throughout the workshop, students actively engaged with the content, asking questions and seeking
clarification on various aspects of fiber splicing and OTDR operation. The collaborative learning
environment facilitated peer-to-peer knowledge sharing, enriching the overall learning experience.

In conclusion, the workshop provided participants with valuable hands-on experience, theoretical
knowledge, and practical skills essential for careers in optical fiber communication. The guidance
and expertise provided by Mr. Nilesh Nikam and his team from Aditya Infotech, Mumbai greatly
contributed to the success of the workshop, ensuring that students were well-prepared for the
challenges of the industry.
