1. COMPANY PROFILE
1.1 INTRODUCTION
Furse is a world leader in the design, manufacture, and supply of earthing and lightning
protection systems. Combining over 100 year’s technical expertise with an enviable
reputation for innovation, quality, and service, Furse is uniquely placed to provide a ‘Total
Solution’ to all your earthing, lighting, and transient overvoltage Protection needs.
Starting in 1893 with one employee, William Joseph Furse acquired a steeple jacking
business in Nottingham which soon expanded and diversified into electrical installation. A
switch gear and components workshop was added, followed by lift and theatre equipment
engineering services. Despite the privations of the First World War, Furse became a multi-
disciplined engineering business, opening subsidiaries in Manchester and London and
eventually moving into wholesale electrical and refrigeration.
In the latter half of the 20th century, the company underwent many acquisition and
mergers until the retirement from business of the last Furse family member in 1977. Further
mergers and acquisitions led to constant changes in the company's structure, until in 1998
Furse became part of the US-based Thomas & Betts corporation, which in 2012 was
acquired by ABB. The ABB Group operates in 100 or more countries worldwide, employing
around 145,000 people, so Furse products continue to benefit from ABB's extensive
network.
Furse, Is one of the leading brands. This division, benefits from economies of scale in
product development and production, facilitating further Efficient development of earthing,
lightning protection, and electronic surge protection systems.

1.2 BACKGROUND
It started in 1893 when William Joseph FURSE (left) acquired the premises and steeple
jacking business of Joshua Till on Burton Street in Nottingham. Starting with one employee,
Mr. FURSE improved and expanded the business. Recognizing at an early stage the growing
importance of electricity, he diversified into electrical installation and opened a workshop in
Goldsmith Place for the manufacture of switchgear and components.
The next seven years to the turn of the century saw a relocation to Traffic Street, and the
further development of the business into a multi-disciplined engineering concern, adding lift
and theatre equipment manufacture and installation to its existing activities.
The first quarter of the new century including the years of the Great War 1914-1918 saw a
continuation of the company's growth with electrical installation subsidiaries opened an
unpredictable world in Manchester and London, and a steeple jacking branch also in
Manchester. The company was incorporated in 1912 as W J FURSE & Co Ltd with the
founder as chairman, and his sons W F FURSE and H J FURSE as directors.
In 1926 FURSE Wholesale Ltd was set up as a subsidiary of the main company, to handle
trade sales of electrical equipment. In 1927 the Refrigeration Division was formed to sell the
'Frigidaire' range of products. William Joseph FURSE died in 1937. His son W F FURSE
became group chairman and Managing Director.
Throughout the Second World War, the company was heavily involved in war work which
fuelled considerable growth. By the early 1950s, FURSE was ready to expand again, and new
offices and stores were built at Wilford Road for the Steeplejack Division. This was followed
in 1954 by the relocation of the foundry from Traffic Street to Wilford Road.
In 1958 the company was acquired by E V Industrials Ltd, who in turn sold their interests in
the organization to Crown House in 1967. The following years under Crown House were a
stable, but not uneventful period.
FURSE Electrical Contracting was merged with other interests within the Crown House
Group to form Crown House Engineering. In 1972 the refrigeration division was closed
down, and the following year, Peerless Engineering was acquired. Mr J K FURSE, the last
member of the FURSE family to be connected with the company, retired in 1977.

Burj Khalifa
As the world's tallest building the Burj Khalifa represents a formidable achievement as part
of the development of downtown Dubai. This prestigious structure provides hotels,
8
residential suites, offices and leisure facilities for many Dubai residents.
Protection of tall structures is an exacting science, considering the need not only to protect
the top but also the sides of the building from lightning damage. Innovative architecture
presents many challenges in lightning protection scheme design.
FURSE has substantial experience of providing protection for tall structures, having provided
lightning protection schemes for many developments in the Middle East and Far East,
including the Burj Khalifa 7 star hotel in Dubai and the Petronas Towers in Malaysia.
Bahrain Financial Harbour
Bahrain Financial Harbour (BFH) is designed to be a world-class, fully integrated
development, home to over 7000 residents and 8000 workers, and providing a focal point
for the country's financial institutions. Comprising 10 projects in total, the BFH development
will include a diversified range of office, residential, retail and leisure facilities to cater to all
needs.
Lightning protection many seem a small part of such a considerable development however it
remains a vital, integral component, especially considering the need to protect residents
and personnel, and the critical high technology electronic systems required by financial
institutions.
FURSE is the provider of lightning protection solutions for this prestigious new development.
Singapore Mass Rapid Transit System - Circle Line
Currently under construction, the Circle Line is the latest development as part of Singapore's
Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system which forms the backbone of the city's railway system,
serving more than a quarter of Singapore's population with a network spanning the entire
city-state. Scheduled for completion in 2011 the Circle Line will consist of 29 stations,
connecting with all other lines within the network at numerous stations, thus offering to
Singapore's residents a viable and improving alternative to road transport.
With the protection of passengers and vital electronic systems paramount, FURSE has been
commissioned to provide the essential lightning protection system for this project. FURSE
