ANTONIO

I once did lend my body for his wealth,

Which but for him that had your husband’s ring
Had quite miscarried. I dare be bound again,
My soul upon the forfeit, that your lord
Will never more break faith advisedly.

Antonio is trying to say that only for once I will give my body to the Jew for his
money. Bassanio’s ring has been given to somebody else to save someones life
which was not supposed to be given to anybody. Antonio will be in your surface
of Bassanio again, my heart is on the money that your master would never
break.

BASSANIO

No, by my honor, madam, by my soul,

No woman had it but a civil doctor,
Which did refuse three thousand ducats of me
And begged the ring, the which I did deny him
And suffered him to go displeased away—
Even he that did uphold the very life
Of my dear friend. What should I say, sweet lady?
I was enforced to send it after him.
I was beset with shame and courtesy.
My honor would not let ingratitude
So much besmear it. Pardon me, good lady,
For by these blessèd candles of the night,
Had you been there I think you would have begged
The ring of me to give the worthy doctor.

Bassanio was saying that the lawyer was not a woman it was a civil doctor and
the person didn’t want three thousand ducats he wanted the ring, as the
person tried to save Antonios life. The person knew Bassanio and Antonio were
really close and great friends. He was reluctant to give the ring as that ring
belonged to Portia’s and she asked him not to give the ring to anyone. He said
you had taken the most important ring and now what should he say to you
sweet lady. He was forced to send the ring because to save Antonio’s life which
was of equal importance. He was even sad as that ring belonged to Portia. His
honour would not let me show such ingratitude to the man. He said thank you
to Portia to save his friend life Antonio which came as a layer. He said if Portia
was there herself, she would begged to ring of mine to the worthy doctor.

PORTIA

If you had known the virtue of the ring,

Or half her worthiness that gave the ring,
Or your own honor to contain the ring,
You would not then have parted with the ring.
What man is there so much unreasonable,
If you had pleased to have defended it
With any terms of zeal, wanted the modesty
To urge the thing held as a ceremony?
Nerissa teaches me what to believe.
I’ll die for ’t but some woman had the ring.

Portia is saying to Bassanio that if he had known the value of the ring or the
cost of her ring or his promise for that ring that he wouldn’t give it to anybody.
Bassanio shouldn’t have given that ring to anybody. What is the reason to part
with the ring and no man would anyway part with the ring. Portia told Bassanio
that he should have tried to defend the ring with determination and with good
manners. Portia told to follow nerrisas example and she would bet her life that
Bassanio has given the ring to some women.

GRATIANO

Let it be so. The first interrogatory

That my Nerissa shall be sworn on is
Whether till the next night she had rather stay,
Or go to bed now, being two hours to day.
But were the day come, I should wish it dark,
That I were couching with the doctor’s clerk.
Well, while I live I’ll fear no other thing
So sore as keeping safe Nerissa’s ring.

PORTIA

Speak not so grossly.—You are all amazed.

[takes out a letter]
Here is a letter. Read it at your leisure.
290
It comes from Padua, from Bellario.
There you shall find that Portia was the doctor,
Nerissa there her clerk. Lorenzo here
Shall witness I set forth as soon as you,
And even but now returned. I have not yet
Entered my house.—Antonio, you are welcome.
And I have better news in store for you
Than you expect.
[gives ANTONIO another letter]
Unseal this letter soon.
There you shall find three of your argosies
Are richly come to harbor suddenly.
You shall not know by what strange accident
I chancèd on this letter.

Portia is saying to Antonio not to speak so badly. There is a letter from ballerio
you can read it in your free time. In court of venice the doctor was portia.
Nerrisa was dressed as a clerk. She is even trying to say that she has not yet
entered or stepped into her house. She is saying that I have better news for you
than you expect. She is saying to read the letter and Antonio merchant ships
are rich to sail suddenly. Portia is trying to say that by a strange accident she
found the letter.
The importance of having a good friend

Once upon a time, I had a good friend named Albassaninia. During the hard
times , Albassaninia was always there for me, helping me.

Albassaninia shared her own experiences, when she too had faced the bad test
scores. She making me realize that I wasn't alone in my struggles. She helped
me through my sadness and in my studies. Albassaninia helped me to study
important sections from our textbooks and even pay attention to what teacher
what she was saying. We gave importance to our friendship.
Riki-Tiki had looked at the thickness of the hood below the neck and he bit the tail of it. He tried to
hit the Nag’s head as well as he jumped. Moreover, Nag had shake him. His eyes were red. He the

Winters are the coldest season of the year. Write a description of a cold winter day. What are
the sights, sounds, smells and feelings that you experienced when you took a walk outside?
In winter, there are winds blowing and the days are colder than the nights. It is so cold that
my hands shiver. I shiver during the day and night. People celebrate Christmas during winter.
People try to drink soups during winter to keep them warm. It is a tradition to drink the hot
chocolate in during the cold days. Traditions have passed from one generation from one
generation to another.
It is so cold that we cannot not even stay in the house. I keep my jacket on in home and out
during the day. There is a dense white fog during winter. I sit near the some warm heater to
warm myself. Classes are taken online on some days because of the heavy snow. It is like the
covid times are coming back like in the past.
It is near Christmas when everyone would buy gifts for each other during that time. It is very
turns dark very early. We were told that some snow storm would come after a few days. So,
we shut the doors of the houses that time.
We celebrate Christmas like anything we gave gifts to our family and friends. We tried to
burn the candle light which is shinning more than the noon – day and it is brighter than
sunlight in the sky. The sky was navy bluesish brown. The winter was enchanting and outside
the house it was really very beautiful that time. There was some frost which was formed on
windows and the doors etc.
That day was the most wonderful day of the year as we had many indoor games to play, and
to have fun in the snow. The night had been coming that time, the night was really very cold
with the sky with stars. It is told the best Christmas ever.
People attitude towards work now and before
Work is a very important point of life that helps us to stay happy. Before people used to work
hard but nowadays people work smartly to get more money. We even try to do our work in
less time by being smart. Nowadays due to increasing technology people work in home
through their laptops or their devices that help people can work anywhere in the world.
They can work from one place to another by their devices. It helps for a person to become
more independent by working instead of being depended on someone else.
Before people tried to focus on hard work and learning nowadays people are forcing on
trading and becoming young entrepreneurs. Nowadays people attitude towards work has
completely changed they not only work for money but also for their passions. People like to
do their work in which they can balance their work, relaxment and their friends.
People do work that they like to do nowadays instead of being forced by someone to do.
People do small works instead of doing one big work in breaks so they can relax as well as do
their work. This tells us how peoples minds has changed. People are nowadays very creative
in their work instead of doing some same procedure of doing their work. Nowadays after the
emails have started its easy for people to do their work as they don’t have to go to the letter
place and collect the letters everything now happens in the email instead of collecting letters
helps to save time as well as it helps for a person to do the work. People try to think of their
growth also.

People nowadays try to develop new skills in themselves instead of just doing work. They
also thing of how to some work in less time by using many websites from the internet. They
even try to do their work by using simple tips for work. This helps a person to do their work.
This tells us people attitude had changed from past to now.

i) A year ago, this same patriot was welcomed by the people. The patriot was were strewn
with fragmented roses, and the people were mad with zeal, enthusiasm to see him,
comeback after a grand victory. He is reminded of the past, since all the people who now
hate him, and hurl stones at him, had welcomed him.
ii) The meaning entered and go tells us that the patriot was welcome with respect and
honour. Now he is leaving in great disgrace. This is a reference to the entry and exit from this
world.
iii) The patriot says that he has not got recognition of what he has done in this world and as
people had misunderstood his deeds and punish him god will repay him in heaven in his
death he feels safer now to go to heaven and win gods grace there. He will be surely
rewarded according to the good he has done on this earth.
iv) It tells us that he has been respected in the past and tells us that heros like the patriot
also fall. It tells us how people are cruel and want to punish this person for one misdeed.
They don’t want to see the patriot anymore. They had treated him badly. The poetic device
used here is alliteration.
v) Hero worship tells us the poet was respected in the past by the people. The people were
mad to see him and now these same people want to punish him for one misdeed. He was
welcome with flowers, the church towers were decorated. He was given a hero’s welcome.
Now these same people are bad and cruel.
Question 7
I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o’er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils:
Besides the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
(i) How does the poet try to humanise the daffodils? [3]

The poet compares the daffodil’s movement to the dancing of human beings. The delicate
movement of the daffodils while swaying in the breeze are similar to the dance movements
of humans. It tells us that how much the poet likes nature.
(ii) Who is referred to as ‘I’ in the extract? Where is ‘I’ and what is he doing? [3]
The poet is referred to as I in this extract. He is wandering aimlessly like a cloud which floats
over the hills and valleys surrounded. It tells us the poet is relaxing and he is the free to
roam around and enjoy nature. The sight of the daffodils fills him with joy.
(iii) State and explain any three Figures of Speech used in the above stanza. [3]
The first figure of speech used is personification because it compares the movement of the
flower to the humans. The second figure of speech used here is simile because it tells us that
the poet was doing nothing like a cloud.
(iv) How does the poet describe himself in the first two lines? What does the use of the
phrase ‘lonely as a cloud’ suggest? [3]
The poet describes himself by saying that he was doing nothing, like a cloud floating over
hills and valleys. He was wandering without any reason as lonely as a cloud in the sky. The
use of lonely as a cloud suggests us that the poet was not doing anything.
(v) How is a poem a tribute to the restorative powers of nature?
The poet tries to tell us that the nature has the power to relieve any stress or sadness. If we
are around nature all the time, we might forget our sadness. The poet enjoys nature. He is
happy with the beautiful sights of nature as he likes nature more than anything. Later when
he has nothing to do and he lies upon his couch he recalls the beauty of the daffodils. It tells
us how beautiful is the nature around us.

god loves those who love their fellow human beings.

should not seek anything for happiness now. If he was delighted with the
