Interviewer: Welcome to Radio 6! Today we’re talking to the writer Betty
Mitchell. She’s written many stories and plays for children. Her
newest play is called ‘Peter in the Woods’. Hello, Betty!
Betty: Hello.
Interviewer: I know you’ve written a lot of plays! How many have you written?
Betty: I’ve written over twenty plays.
Interviewer: Wow! That’s a lot! Tell us about your new play.
Betty: Well, it’s about a boy, Peter, who goes to visit his uncle in the woods.
On the way, he meets an old lady and a girl, and he helps them. But
when he gets to his uncle’s house, he meets a wolf! And … well, I
won’t tell you the rest! You have to come and see the play yourself!
Interviewer: Where can we see the play?
Betty: It’s at the Children’s Theatre. It starts tomorrow.
Interviewer: Tell me about how you write your plays. Is it difficult to write?
Betty: No, it isn’t. I write every day for four hours.
Interviewer: And do you get any exercise when you’re working?
Betty: Yes, I do. I walk the dog and sometimes I go for a swim or a run.
Today I’ve walked the dog and I’ve also been for a run.
Interviewer: You have a busy life! Thanks for talking to us, Betty!
Betty: Thank you!

Our bodies need to work well. We need food for energy and to make us grow. We also
need food to help us sleep. Carbohydrates, like bread and cereal, give our bodies
energy. Fats, like cheese and olive oil, help to keep us warm. Fruit and vegetables,
such as bananas and carrots, help to keep our brains working. Proteins, for example
fish and eggs, help our bodies get better when we’re unwell. When we eat all these
foods, we have a balanced diet. When we don’t eat breakfast or lunch, we have no
energy and can’t work hard at school.

What’s a compound machine? steps

escalator
1 Read about compound machines. Then circle
True or False.

Simple machines like a slide and a seesaw have only got electric
one part to make them work. An escalator and a bike motor
need more than one part to work. They’re called compound
machines. This is because an escalator and a bike have
got more than one simple machine to make them move. bike wheel
A bike has got a chain and a wheel and axle. It’s also
got two pedals to make the chain move the wheels round
axle
and round.
An escalator has got chains on many wheels and axles.
But an escalator needs an electric motor to move the
chains. Then the escalator can move people up and down
on its steps.

What’s the difference between vertebrates and invertebrates?

1 Read about vertebrates and invertebrates. Then match the questions with
the answers.

Vertebrates are animals with a skeleton of bones inside

their bodies. Their skeleton has a spine or a backbone.
A spine helps vertebrates to move. Vertebrates can
skeleton fly, swim or run. They can live on land, like a wolf, or
in water, like a seahorse. Birds and fish, reptiles and
bones mammals are all vertebrates. The blue whale is the
biggest vertebrate. It’s about thirty metres long.

Invertebrates haven’t got a skeleton or a spine. They

can have soft bodies, like jellyfish and rays, or hard
vertebrates
shells, like oysters and crabs. Invertebrates can also
live on land, like spiders, or in water, like lobsters.
Different vertebrates can fly, swim, run and float. Most
spine
invertebrates are small, but the giant squid is the
biggest invertebrate. It’s about twenty metres long.

How does water help us to stay healthy?

1 Read about how water helps us. Then answer the questions.

Water is important for everybody. We get

some water from drinks and food. Water
is in milk and orange juice and it’s in fruit
1 litre and vegetables. But we also need to drink
of water water from the tap because water helps
tap our bodies to be healthy.
Food scientists think that children should
drink each day:

How old? How many litres? How many glasses?

4–8 years old About 1 litre 5
9–12 years old 1 litre – about 1.5 litres 7

Drinking water helps our body temperature to keep us cool. It’s important to
drink more water when we do exercise and sports or when it’s a hot day. When
we drink water, we don’t get very tired and we shouldn’t get headaches. Drinking
water also helps us to think and work better at school. We should drink water
when we have breakfast, lunch and dinner.

What are forces?

1 Read about forces. Then tick (✔).

strong weak

push pull supermarket sledge

trolley

Forces are pushes and pulls. When we push or pull something, we move it.
Pushing something moves it away from you and pulling something moves it to you.
For example, we push a supermarket trolley but we pull a sledge. We push a ring
on a finger but we pull on our socks. We can push or pull a door to open and close it.
When you give a skateboard a strong push, it goes faster. When you pull a kite
slowly, you use a weak force. You need a strong force to pull something heavy.
When a magnet attracts a metal key, it uses a very strong force. When gravity
pulls things down to the ground, it also uses a very strong force.

Push Pull
1 when you move something away from you ✓
2 when you move something to you
3 when you move a sledge
4 when you put on your socks
5 when you open or close a door
6 when you run with a kite

2 pushing a heavy supermarket trolley strong weak
3 pulling a sledge with nobody on it strong weak
4 pulling on your shoes strong weak
5 pushing a lot of big scenery strong weak
6 a magnet attracting a metal object strong weak

3 What do you push and what do you pull? Do you use a strong force or a
weak force?

I sometimes push a . I use a force.

I sometimes pull a . I use a force.

What are the properties of materials?

1 Read about materials. Then write the words.

natural iron pan jug made fragile transparent flexible

materials made from of clay
minerals

Materials have got many properties and they’re all different. Materials can be natural. For example,
cotton and wood are from plants, leather is from an animal and iron is from minerals. Some
materials, like glass, paper and plastic, are made in factories. Some materials, like leather, are
strong because they don’t break. Other materials, like clay and glass, are fragile because they can
break. Materials have got other properties. For example, we can see through glass and some plastics
because they’re transparent. And some materials can change their shape because they’re flexible.

1 It’s strong. It’s natural. It’s from an animal. leather

2 It’s made in a factory. It’s fragile and it’s transparent.
3 It’s fragile but it’s not transparent.
4 It’s hard and strong. It’s from a mineral. It can be made
into things for the kitchen.
5 It can be soft or hard. It can be transparent and flexible.
It’s made in a factory.

What are the three states of water?

1 Read about water. Then match the questions with the answers.

solid liquid gas (water water boils water freezes

vapour)
There are three states of water. They are solid, liquid and gas. Water is a solid when
it freezes into ice. It‛s a liquid when we drink it, and it‛s gas (water vapour) when we
boil it. Water can change from ice to liquid, then from liquid to gas (water vapour).
Look at this diagram. You can see how water can change into the three states.

ice cube ice melts water boils water vapour water freezes
and turns and turns into gets cold and and turns into
into liquid water vapour turns into liquid ice cubes again

Some other materials can also change from one state to a different state. For
example, a chocolate bar is solid when we buy it. When we heat it in a pan, it melts
and changes into a liquid. When the chocolate cools, it turns into hard chocolate again.

1 When is water a solid? a We boil it.

2 When we drink water, what state is it? b It melts.
3 What do we do to water to change it c It freezes.
