'Siege That' Builder
Save Map
Lock Map
Use the pre-built map and fixed amounts of stone and gold to build the strongest
castle you can. Then challenge others to storm it, at the end of the siege your
castle gets a score!
New map starts you off with a blank canvas on which you can create your ultimate
Stronghold.
Load map reloads a previous working map and allows you to continue editing your
castle.
Save map saves your current map as a working map allowing you to reload and edit it
later.
Lock map saves your map in its final form and prevents any more editing. After it
is locked a map will be listed in 'Play a siege' mode.
Leave 'Siege that' mode.
Edit map.

"She can hardly stand... "
"Well he did like a tipple."
"She's younger than she looks, you know."
"Does she ever wash those rags?"
"They say she sleeps in the beer vat."
"I bet she slurs the vows."
(Tanner marriage- tanner is psychopath with 2 sharp knives)
"A dangerous liaison, i'd say."
"He looks a little sheepish."
"They say she killed her last husband."
"Beautiful, but plain mad you know."
"Isn't he devoted to his pet cow?"
"Not often the tanner gets hitched eh?"
"Look, she's brought her knives into church"
"It's a brave man that would marry the tanner"
"I don't know who is the craziest, him or her."
"Can you smell beef??"
(Mother marriage - nice well-balanced person)
"Oh, doesn't she look lovely."
"This is her 8th husband you know."
"They say she had 5 offers of marriage."
"Is there any free drink after the service?"
"She's my distant cousin you know."
"She's been looking for a husband for the last 15 years, i'm so happy for her."
"It's six or seven children she's got now."
"They are spending a week in the marsh for their honeymoon."
"She's too good for him, i'd say."
"Well, this is the longest wedding service I've ever sat through."

"Don't worry about me, your lordship, i'm working really hard."
"I'm a good worker, aren't I sire? No need to put me in the stocks."
"Work, work, work, that's my new motto."
"It's not like to good old days anymore, all I seem to do now is work."
"I'm really tired, it feels like I've been working forever."

"I'm feeling faint, I can't work much harder."
"I was put in the gibbet once, I will never make the same mistake again."
"I'm always working, please can I take a little rest?"
"This castle is really oppressive, you know?"
"Oh please your highness, not the rack again."

"Food food food! I'm putting on so much weight."
"We have so much food nowadays I'm getting really fat."

"What a great bribe! Thanks lordship."
"With you paying me this much, I will soon be able to afford another chair."
"You are the most generous lord in the land, sire."
"You're sure you can afford to pay this much, sire?"
"A bribe, great I love bribes, I do."
"Your tax policy is most enlightened lordship."
"How about a larger bribe... only joking, sire!!"
"The people are very pleased with these bribes, master."
"A small bribe, how novel, I like it."
"A bribe, so let me get this right, you pay us money?"
"You are very kind to be giving us these small handouts, sire."
"I heard you're handing out bribes, oh I mean alms to the poor, great."
"No taxes! Well that makes a nice change."
"This policy of no taxes is the least we could expect."
"No taxes is one thing, but what about a small gift, go on... "
"No taxes is good taxes, that's my motto."
"Extortionate taxes are crippling me, I have very little left for myself."
"Your tax rates are ridiculous."
"I ...erm I mean we, demand lower taxes. Now... or fairly soon at least."
"These high tax rates are a joke, they are half this in the castle next-door."
"Cruel taxes! Oh no not again, I don't know where I'll find the money from."
"Please lower the taxes, lordship, I need to clothe my children."
"Could you lower the taxes just a little tiny bit... Please master? "
"How the people suffer under the tyrannical yoke of taxation, your lordship."

"I don't know where that jester gets all his energy from."
"That traveling fair has really cheered me up."
"I love a good fair, just like my old mum did."

"The crops are withering, my liege."
"There is something wrong with our hops, my lord."
"Old bessy is acting a little strange lord, so are most of the other cows."
"Strange, all the apple trees have lost their fruit. It's witches work my lord."

(tutorial text)
-1
Welcome to the Stronghold tutorial!
This tutorial will teach you the techniques you need to know in order to get your
castle up and running!
-2
Looking around
The first task is to find a suitable place to build. To scroll around the map,
push the mouse pointer to the edge of the screen.
-3
Setting up Your Settlement
The first thing you need to do in Stronghold is find a suitable place to site your
castle. Left click on the 'Saxon Hall' building, then find a flat, empty piece of
ground on the map.
Move your mouse over the main screen until your keep appears. Once you are happy
with the position, left click to place your keep.
Wood has automatically been transferred from your starting goods into your
stockpile. The wood is now available for you to use in your construction.
-4
New Workers
In addition to the saxon hall and the stockpile you should see a campfire. Move
the mouse pointer over it. The halo that appears is your population growth
indicator.
The more popular you are, the faster it will fill and the quicker your population
will grow. Every time the indicator makes one full rotation, a peasant will arrive
and stand by the campfire until work becomes available.
If the halo turns red you are unpopular. The halo will then be showing you how
quickly people will leave your castle.
-5
Starting Food
On the top left of the screen you can see that there is plenty of food among your
starting goods but to use it you will need to build a granary.
-6
Food Stores
Left click on the granary building and move your mouse pointer in the area near the
keep. When the granary building appears, left click to place it.
The food in your starting goods will be transferred to the granary. Your peasants
now have an ample supply of food to eat.
-7
Entering Buildings
Right click to exit the build mode, then left click on the granary you have just
built to bring up the granary panel.
-8
Using the Granary Panel
This panel lets you see your food details and allows you to make changes to your
rationing.
On the right of this panel there are five plates with varying amounts of food on
them. These symbolize the different ration settings from 'no rations' up to
'double rations'. At the moment rations are set to the default of 'full rations'.
-9
Setting a ration level.
Left click on the plate with the most food on it to set your rations to double.
Due to your generous rationing, you are now gaining a big bonus to your popularity
each month and the popularity symbol has changed to a smiling face! The downside
to this is that you are consuming food at twice the rate you were before.
You can view the rate of consumption by watching the speed of the bar in the
granary or you simply see the units of food disappear from your granary on the map.
-10
Setting Taxes:
Next right click to leave the granary and left click on your saxon hall to bring up
the keep panel. This panel lets you view your tax details and allows you to change
your tax rate.
You can set your taxes to anything from a generous bribe all the way up to a
downright cruel tax. Taxes are currently set to the default of 'no taxes' so you
are not gaining or losing any money.
-11
Effects of Setting Taxes.
Left click on the right arrow until taxes are set to 'mean'. You will now have a
little gold coming in to your treasury each month, but you are suffering a big hit
to your popularity due to your mean tax rate.
-12
Scribe Reports
The scribe shows your popularity, gold and population size. His expression
reflects your popularity.
The report book he is holding will help you to find critical information about your
settlement the large number at the top shows your popularity rating. Left click on
the report book.
-13
Reports
The reports panel is now visible. Left click on the popularity button.
-14
Popularity
Here you see the effects of your actions on castle popularity for the coming month.
Making changes to your tax rate and rationing are the two main ways of manipulating
your popularity. With popularity over 50, people will come to the castle; below 50
they will start to leave.
-15
Continue
Your tax rate and rations level will now be set to their original starting levels.
Now right click again to leave the report.
-16
Expanding
Now you have a grasp of how to place buildings and manage your taxes, food and
popularity, let's take a look at how to expand your settlement further.
-17
Structure Interface.
Running along the bottom left of the screen are six shields. These are the
building category buttons, which change the type of buildings displayed on the
building selection scroll above them.
Move your mouse pointer over these shields. The shields will highlight and above
the building selection scroll you will see a description of the button.
-18
Gathering Wood
Left click on the industry building category (hammer). Click on the woodcutter's
hut in the building selection scroll and build four woodcutter's huts close to the
trees. Finally, right click to stop building.
-19
Gathering Wood
Now you see that four of the peasants around your campfire have turned into
woodcutters and are working cutting down trees. Wood will soon begin to arrive in
your stockpile
-20
Food
Now you need to start increasing your food stocks. Left click on your granary
again.
-21
Food Supply
The amount of food you have left is shown in absolute units and also monthly
supply. Right click to exit the granary screen.
-22
Hunting
Left click on the farm building category (apple). Now place four hunters posts and
the remaining peasants will become hunters.
-23
Hunting
When the hunters have prepared their meat, they will place it in your granary. Aim
to have at least enough food coming in to cover demand.
-24
Building Houses
The bottom set of numbers on your scribes report show your current population
followed by your available housing. It is currently 8 out of 8, which means the
housing inside of your saxon hall, is at full capacity.
-25
Building Houses
Click on the town buildings category (house) and build a hovel.
-26
Housing
Your available housing will increase and your population will begin growing again.
Each hovel you build will hold up to 8 people. Your settlement is growing, but so
of course are the numbers of mouths to feed!
-27
Other Controls.
Now you will learn a few additional interface controls that are useful when playing
the game.
-28
Rotating The Map
To rotate the map, move the mouse pointer into the middle of the screen then press
and hold the right mouse button. The camera interface icons will appear. Move the
mouse pointer upwards onto the rotate icon.
-29
Zooming The Map
To zoom out, press the right button again and move the mouse pointer to the right,
over the zoom icon and release the button. To zoom back in, repeat the process.
-30
Full Screen Mode
To go full screen, press and hold the right button and move the mouse pointer to
the left over the full screen icon and release. To go back to normal mode, repeat
the process.
-31
Seeing Behind Things
Press and hold the right mouse button again to bring up the camera interface.
This time move the mouse pointer down onto the flatten icon. This will pull down
tall objects such as mountains and walls and allow you to see behind them. Release
the button to allow the landscape to spring back up.

(start act one)
(narrative)
Act One: The Fallen Kingdom
As soon as the King had marched his army into the barbarian homeland, rumors began
of a plot to seize the throne. When news came of the King's capture, the country
was invaded. Several nobles, including your father, sought to end the bloodshed
but on the way to meet for negotiations their party were massacred by a band of
unknown raiders. Bruised and exhausted, you have been beaten back to a forest on
an overlooked peninsula where a small group of loyal troops are hiding. Although
the country is lost, maybe from this refuge you can at least avenge your father's
death.
(mission one narrative)
Mission One: Gathering the Lost
Sir Longarm
I say we act now and strike while the iron is hot.
Lord Woolsack
No, no, no! The few men we have would be cut down like lambs to the slaughter. We
need time to gather our forces.
(Sir Longarm)
Nonsense! I shall take six of my finest men into enemy territory by the cover of
darkness and...
(Lord Woolsack)
No, no, no, just listen! Our men are close to starvation. This is what we must
do...
(narrative)
The debate rages on well into the night but eventually, Lord Woolsack takes you to
one side.
(Lord Woolsack)
Sir Longarm tells me he knew your father well, which is why I am giving you your
chance to prove yourself. It is time you got your first taste of command.
(mission one post script)
(narrative)
Whilst the men frantically ferry precious supplies into the granary, Sir Longarm
and Lord Woolsack ride into the camp.
(Sir Longarm)
Job well done. Not too bad for your first attempt.
(Lord Woolsack)
No, no, no! The fool has pitched camp in the middle of the wolves' migration
track.
(Sir Longarm)
Good! It will give the men some well-needed practice before we make our strike.
(Lord Woolsack)
Hmmph! Now I have no choice but to send out a scout to find a more permanent
position.
(IN-GAME)
(middle - scribe)
Animal tracks have been reported in the area sire.
(later - scribe)
Scouts are reporting that packs of wolves are closing in on the castle; we must get
the supplies stored.

>>101-----
(mission one brief)
We need you to oversee the setting up of a good-sized base camp. Start by finding
a suitable clearing then use some of the wood plentiful in this area to begin your
construction.

>>102-----
(mission one objectives)

>>103-----
(mission one strategy/hints)
Start by building a couple of woodcutter huts. Then place a couple of hunter
posts.
Placing hunter posts close to the granary will speed up food production.
Building woodcutter huts near trees will speed up wood production.

>>104-----
(mission two narrative)
(narrative)
Mission Two: Finishing the Fort
Day by day the camp becomes more overwhelmed by the wolves and their persistent
howling robs the men of sleep. The situation is about to get out of hand when Lord
Woolsack's scout returns. Soon afterwards you are summoned into the command tent.
(Lord Woolsack)
Sir Longarm has convinced me to give you another chance. We have found the remains
of an abandoned stockade.
(Sir Longarm)
Wolves plague this county every winter so we need you to get the stockade back up
to scratch quickly.
(Lord Woolsack)
Failure is not an option this time. Just keep your eyes peeled.
(mission two post script)
(Lord Woolsack)
Well at least you can complete half a task.
(Sir Longarm)
Job well done! Now our men are secure we can send a hunting party into the next
county to eradicate the wolves for good.
(Lord Woolsack)
I suppose it must be done but we have to proceed with caution as that county is
close to the enemies' border.
(IN-GAME)
(middle - scribe)
The wolves are on the prowl sire!
(end - scribe)
Here they come again sire!

>>105-----
(mission two brief)
To ensure the safety of your men, you are required to renovate the abandoned
stockade before winter is upon us again. Use your archers to kill off any wolves
that threaten your peasants.

>>106-----
(mission two objectives)

>>107-----
(mission two hints)
Once wood and food production are set up, start enclosing your keep by joining the
walls that already exist. When enclosing the keep, making your defensive walls
straight will use less wood. In order for the "Complete Castle" objective to be
achieved, the keep must be completely enclosed by walls.
Make sure you don't have any gaps in the walls. The SPACEBAR flattens your walls
and allows you to look for the weak spots.
Archers are better off in a high position to fire at any attacking wolves. The
best position for them is on the gatehouse.
Once the castle is enclosed, setting your granary on half rations may help to meet
the food quota, but keep an eye on your popularity. If it drops below 50 people
will start leaving the castle.

>>108-----
(mission three narrative)
Mission Three: Eliminating the Wolves
(Sir Longarm)
We need you to train some new recruits in the use of the bow.
(Lord Woolsack)
The wolves breed in the next county, find their lairs and wipe them out. It's them
or us.
(Sir Longarm)
Find a hilltop and fortify yourself there using a motte and bailey.
(Lord Woolsack)
Duc de Puce (the Rat) has been patrolling the area of late so it is vital you are
not spotted, as we don't stand a hope against a full assault.
(Sir Longarm)
If you see that Rat before I do, be sure you slice him open for me.
(mission three post script)
(narrative)
Fortunately the Rat's scouting party did not survive long enough to give away your
position but it is likely that they will be missed before long.
(IN-GAME)
(Start>Scribe)
We'll have to work fast. These wolves are everywhere.
(End>Scribe)
Sir, De Puce's men have arrived! We can't allow them to give away our position.

>>109-----
(mission three brief)
Construct a motte and bailey fortification and strengthen it with some towers.
Then start bow production and raise a force of archers with which to eradicate the
wolves that run riot there.

>>110-----
(mission three objectives)

>>111-----
(mission three hints)
Place your keep on the hill as this puts you in a better defensive position. Build
a wooden wall with platforms around your keep then move your archers on to them to
optimize their firing range.
Concentrate on gathering plenty of wood, as this is needed in order to create your
bows, wooden walls and platforms.
Placing the fletcher's workshop close to the stockpile and the armory will increase
your fletcher's efficiency.
Targeting a wolf with an archer will cause the whole pack to attack. Make sure you
have enough archers, before trying to eradicate the wolves.

>>112-----
(mission four narrative)
Mission Four: The Hidden Lookout
A dispatch arrives from Sir Longarm.
(Sir Longarm)
Hopefully, by the time you receive this message, all has gone well and you have put
an end to those irritating wolves. I now ask a favor of you. Begin constructing
an outpost on the edge of Duc de Puce's territory in order to help me better judge
the strength of the Rat's forces. You must not under any circumstances send
confirmation of your mission completion to Lord Woolsack.
(Description of the Rat)
The Rat was raised as an only child in lands belonging to the De Puce family. The
Duke showed his mother favor ensuring that she never paid taxes and always had
enough to get by. One day a messenger came by and it was revealed that his father
was the same Duc de Puce who his mother had once worked for as a serving wench.
Due to an unfortunate accident the entire De Puce family had been lost at sea
whilst returning from holiday leaving the Rat as next in line to inherit the title
of Duke.
(mission four post script)
You have boldly beaten back many of the Rat's patrols but a few stragglers have
managed to survive the last attack and escaped. Although no new orders have been
received, you cannot afford to let them reach Duc de Puce (the Rat) to uncover your
location.
(IN-GAME)
(Early>Scribe)
They've found us sir! What are your orders?
(Middle>Scribe)
Our scouts report another group of the Rat's men heading in our direction. Are we
ready for them?
(End>Scribe)
The cowards have run sir! We can't catch them. They'll give us away for sure.

>>113-----
(mission four brief)
Find a suitable location on high ground near the lands belonging to Duc de Puce and
start construction of an outpost. The wooden keep will offer better protection
than a simple hall. Take some cattle to breed as the land there suits them well.
Do not show yourself to the enemy, but should you be discovered let none escape to
tell. The hills will give your archers an advantage when firing from height.
>>114-----
(mission four objectives)

>>115-----
(mission four hints)
Start by placing your keep on high ground near the plains. Use walls and platforms
and a gatehouse to defend your position.
Use the terrain wisely as higher ground gives your archers the advantage.
Dairy farms are more productive than hunting but take some time to get started so
defend them well once they are up and running.

>>116-----
(mission five narrative)
(narrative)
Mission Five: Between a Rock and a Hard Place
You continue to chase the retreating survivors deep into the next county only to
lose them in fog by nightfall. Meanwhile...
(Rat)
They have taken out half a dozen patrols and are actually invading one of my
counties. What am I supposed to do now?
(Snake)
Stay calm De Puce, any rebel militia worth their salt fled abroad seasons ago.
Your men can take care of a few sniveling outlaws. Why not come deer hunting with
me to take your mind off things?
(Rat)
But they're only a stones throw away from here. I have to do something!
(Snake)
Simply send a small siege force to sever their source of escape.
(Rat)
That's easy for you to say.
(Snake)
Relax. By the time we return from our hunting trip the problem will have resolved
itself. Trust me.
(Description of the Snake)
The Snake was once made governor to some of the richest provinces in the homeland
where he made an extremely fruitful living from under declaring the taxes he
collected but when the King found out, he had him posted here to the 'new
colonies'. During one of his first military encounters, he went up against your
father losing an eye to him in combat. On that day, the Snake swore he would not
rest until the decapitated heads of your entire family were lined-up on spikes
outside of his keep.
(mission five Post Script)
Fortunately you have survived the assault and as luck would have it, taken control
of another county. No sooner has the dust of battle settled than a dispatch
arrives summoning you back. You are certain the Lords will be pleased with your
progress.
(IN_GAME)
(Middle>Scribe)
They're coming! To the ramparts!

>>117-----
(mission five brief)
Your scouts report that you are trapped without enough supplies to continue or
enough troops to fight your way back. Your only chance is to make your stand here.
They have found a strong defensive position on an island in a broad river and one
of your lieutenants has already started building a base. The land around the river
is very fertile, use it to grow some wheat.

>>118-----
(mission five objectives)

>>119-----
(mission five hints)
Build plenty of woodcutter huts and fletcher's workshops early on. Then start to
work on your perimeter defenses, using gatehouses and walls with wooden platforms
to block off the fords leading to your keep. Place archers on your wooden
platforms and gatehouses as this will allow them to more easily defend against any
attacking troops.
Use the river to your advantage.
The enemy is now well aware of your presence so be prepared to deal with their
siege engines.
Make sure your farms are kept out of harms way.
Wheat production takes a lot of resources to get working, but once working it is
the most efficient food type. Each mill will support multiple bakers.

(start act two)
Act Two: Taking a Stand
(Lord Woolsack)
You damn fool! What in God's name did you think you were doing?
(Sir Longarm)
Well, to be fair, it was I who gave the order to scout further.
(Lord Woolsack)
Yes, yes, yes but not even you would be stupid enough to authorize an all out
attack on De Puce.
(narrative)
Meanwhile, the Rat receives news of the loss of his county.
(Rat)
I can't believe it! My troops have scattered all over the place, there's nothing I
can do. I've lost the county!!
(Snake)
Show some backbone, my contingency plan is already in motion. You'll have your
county back soon enough. Trust me.
(narrative)
Later, a dispatch arrives from the Rat stating your newly acquired county has been
blockaded. As Woolsack reads the letter you and Sir Longarm look on like a pair of
naughty school children.
(mission six narrative)
Mission Six: The Rat's Proposal
(Lord Woolsack)
De Puce is willing to consider a truce once we withdraw our troops from his county.
(Sir Longarm)
It's a trap! This youngster's father was killed the same way. We should use our
momentum for another strike.
(Lord Woolsack)
No, no, no, we don't have the manpower to sustain a full-scale war.
(narrative)
You are dismissed, leaving the lords to discuss the important details of your next
mission. Finally, a red face Sir Longarm storms out of the room to give you your
briefing.
(Sir Longarm)
Lord Woolsack, in all his wisdom, wishes you to arrange a truce but I don't like
it. I will lend you my finest mason so you can prepare yourself for the worst.
(mission six post script)
(Rat)
It's happened again! It's unbelievable, i'm running out of counties and they'll be
coming for me next, i'm doomed!
(Snake)
Erm... I think I will ride back now for reinforcements.
(Rat)
Oh... Ride back? Um... Wouldn't it be easier to send a message?
(Snake)
Really. There's no need to worry, i'll be back before you know it. So long my
trusted friend... So long...
(IN-GAME)
(Start>Scribe)
Duc de Puce wishes to meet us in this valley surrounded by cliffs. It looks like
someone has moved some of the boulders to the edge of the cliff.
(Early>Scribe)
It's a trap! Sir Longarm was right.

>>121-----
(mission six brief)
From Lord Woolsack: Pitch a small camp in an open clearing then await Duc de
Puce's arrival. Do not bring arms to bear upon him for any reason. To secure our
lands these talks must succeed.
From Sir Longarm: A trap. Our advance party was mown down like animals. Now I
will give you some new orders. Build a large fortification and prepare your troops
for Duc de Puce's arrival. Use the masons I sent with you to quarry stone and
build a strong and permanent castle here.

>>122-----
(mission six objectives)

>>123-----
(mission six hints)
Place your keep near the stone to the southwest and use the quarry there to build
up your defenses. Start weapons production early.
Building crenulations on your walls will offer better protection for your archers
and make them harder to smash through.

>>124-----
(mission seven narrative)
Mission Seven: Breaking the Siege
(Jester)
I have a tale from days long gone, of the scrawny Rat who told a lie, the rebels
saw his plans undone, and arrows rained down from on high. Run, run was his
soldiers wail, as death from above continued to hail, for the Rat, for the Rat, the
end is nigh, on his knees for mercy we'll hear him cry.
(narrative)
As bards throughout the land do their level best to undermine the Rat's authority
and with Lord Woolsack's judgment questioned, Sir Longarm takes the lead. You soon
receive word that the nervous Lord Manikin has dared to take up arms against the
enemy alongside you.
(Duc Volpe)
De Puce! You need to take care of Lord Manikin. If just one lord rises, they will
all rise.
(Rat)
Well... er... I have to reclaim my counties first and... um... I still haven't got
enough troops so... er... um... I was waiting for reinforcements from...
(Duc Volpe)
Enough! Lay siege to Lord Manikin's county or I'll string you up.
(Rat)
(Gulp).
(Longarm)
In return for your service I hereby promote you to commander of all rebel troops.
You have earned nothing less. Your first urgent task will be to lend aid to Lord
Manikin until the siege on his keep has been lifted.
(mission seven post script)
(Snake)
I must say that I am imperially impressed with your military achievements. I have
often toyed with the idea of taking on that pathetic little Rat myself and I feel
certain we can come to a mutually beneficial arrangement.
(IN-GAME)
(Start>Rat)
You again! How did you get in there without me knowing? No matter, i'll send some
of my troops to dispatch you.

>>125-----
(mission seven brief)
Lord Manikin is under siege and it is vital to our cause that his county does not
fall. Land by boat with a company of spearmen and command his garrison to victory.
Success here may well spark uprisings from some of the other counties.

>>126-----
(mission seven objectives)

>>127-----
(mission seven hints)
Ensure you have plenty of archers on the stone walls and use your spearmen to
defend them. Once you have weakened the enemy ground forces, use spearmen to
attack and destroy any enemy siege equipment.
Get spearmen onto the wall as soon as possible, they will be able to push off any
siege ladders, which threaten your castle.
Use the aggressive and defensive stances to allow your troops to decide for
themselves when to attack the enemy.
Be prepared for more attacks!

(narrative)
Mission Eight: Dealing with the Devil
An urgent dispatch arrives from Sir Longarm.
(Sir Longarm)
Congratulations are in order for the way you handled that last mission but we are
about to face our greatest challenge yet. Leave immediately for the borders of our
homelands, bringing with you a select band of your best men. All will be explained
upon your arrival.
(narrative)
You ride your horses until they are near exhaustion and finally meet with Sir
Longarm's messenger who hands you your briefing.
(mission eight post script)
With the siege force annihilated, victory is yours but upon your return news
arrives that the Snake has broken his agreement and has claimed the Rat's county as
his own.
(IN_GAME)
(Early>Snake)
I have had a change of heart. Due to the recent increase in army wages, I will
need you to supply me with more ale. Still a fair trade don't you think?
(Middle>Snake)
My counties have been hit hard by the storms this season, I am afraid I will need
even more ale to raise money for the troops.
(Late>Scribe)
Dire news, sir. Duc Truffe (the Pig) has just taken one of the neutral counties.
(Late>Scribe)
The shipment of ale has been completed and sent to the Snake. Hopefully the
reinforcements he promised will arrive soon.
(Late>Scribe)
The troops promised by the Snake have arrived sire.

>>129-----
(mission eight Brief)
Spies report that the Rat is due to launch a do or die attack on our lands and you
must intercept and delay his forces. There is no time to raise an army but Duc
Beauregard (the Snake) will send a large force to help us in return for a shipment
of ale. Once the Rat's siege force is defeated, Beauregard has agreed to let us
take the Rat's neighboring-county without resistance. Grow hops and brew ale to
send to the Snake but be warned, it will be hard to keep your people in line whilst
meeting the terms of the deal. Use any means at your disposal even cruelty if
necessary, the Rat's force must be defeated here.

>>130-----
(mission eight objectives)

>>131-----
(mission eight hints)
Build up your defenses and protect your farms against the enemy. After defeating
enemy ground forces, have a skirmish party at the ready to deal with any enemy
siege equipment as soon as possible.
There is very little farmland, so if you find you are running low on food use the
trader to supplement your food supply.
Use 'good' buildings to help with any popularity problems you may run into.
Use 'bad' buildings to increase the productivity of your workers.

>>132-----
(mission nine narrative)
Mission Nine: The Rat's Last Stand
(Sir Longarm)
I expected nothing less from that double-dealing reptile. I will deal with him
myself. In the meantime, we have had some good fortune. Whilst the Rat has been
running around the county like a headless chicken a small force has stolen into and
captured his castle! He is currently charging home to retake it and I want you to
go there and take charge of our garrison.
(Wolf)
Why didn't you intervene sooner?
(Pig)
No one ask me!
(Wolf)
These rebels have had too many easy victories against De Puce. He's making us look
weak! Make sure they don't succeed this time.
(Pig)
I go break some heads.
(Description of the Pig)
When the Pig was born it is rumored he looked so hideous that his parents abandoned
him in the street. Whatever the case, it is known that he was taken in by a group
of traveling bandits who raided small towns and villages throughout the homeland.
Whilst growing-up with this small army of rogues he was vastly underfed, however
after developing a crude but effective understanding of basic military tactics and
being nominated as their leader, the Pig made sure that he had first call on the
best foods after each raid and has overeaten ever since.
(mission nine post script)
As the Rat falls to your men in battle, the onlookers let out a roar of jubilation.
Maybe there is a glimmer of hope for the nation yet.
(IN-GAME)
(Start>Rat)
The Rat sends a message to the Pig: I must retake my castle Pig. I need help.
The Pig sends a message to the Rat: Shut up! I have sent a troop of men to your
castle. Command them and they will retake it.
(Middle>Sir Longarm)
I have retaken the county wrongfully claimed by the snake.
(Upon Victory>Rat)
N, n, n, no please!

>>133-----
(mission nine brief1)
Defend the Rat's castle against its former owner! It is very badly designed so you
will need to strengthen it. Time spent finishing his moat would be well spent.
This is an excellent opportunity to finish off one of the Tyrants for good.

>>134-----
(mission nine objectives)

>>135-----
(mission nine hints)
Use your spearmen to quickly complete the moat. Use spearmen and archers to defend
your castle walls. After enemy attacks make sure to repair damage to the castle
and moat.
Stone towers will give you an additional height advantage.
Catapults withstand a lot of missile fire, but are quite easily destroyed by combat
troops.

>>136-----
(mission ten narrative)
Mission Ten: The Snake Hunt Begins
(Sir Longarm)
So, you have put the first of those scum-sucking tyrants out of their misery.
Rejoice but take heed, not all of his kind are quite so inept. There are greater
challenges on the horizon. It was the Snake himself who tricked your father into
the trap that cost him his life and the time for vengeance is upon us. Command of
my main force is yours so you may hunt him down. In the meantime, Lord Woolsack
will open up a second front.
(mission ten post script)
After the populous of this county have seen you hold off against the Snake's
forces, their support swings in your favor and the county is yours.
(IN-GAME)
(Early>Scribe)
Sir Longarm has left on a ship to negotiate with the King's captors.

>>137-----
(mission ten brief)
The Snake's men are halfway through building a castle in the next county. Chase
out the few guards he has placed there then finish the construction yourself. The
Snake will undoubtedly try to retake the castle, so defend it well.

>>138-----
(mission ten objectives)

>>139-----
(mission ten hints)
Concentrate on killing off enemy archers first when attacking the castle. Once you
have captured the castle, build up its defensive capability to defend of attacks
from the Snake.
You are charged with bringing religion to the castle. Build several chapels to
increase the number of peasants that are blessed.
Use your military units to kill off any rabbits eating your crops.

>>140-----
(narrative)
Mission Eleven: First Blood
With Lord Woolsack occupied and Sir Longarm on a mission abroad you have yet to
receive new orders so you decide to march onwards.
(Wolf)
The men you sent to the Rat's county failed to do their job.
(Pig)
(snort) Not my fault! I just gave troops, Rat told them what to do.
(Wolf)
Silence! Reclaim the Rat's lands or I'll rip out your tongue. I need to deal with
the source of the problem.
(Description of the Wolf)
The Wolf's past is shrouded with mystery and what is known of his history is mainly
patched together from stories and unreliable rumors alone. This aside, it is
believed that both of his parents died from natural causes in close succession
shortly after his eighteenth birthday.
(mission eleven post script)
Thanks to the crossbow designs handed to you from the hooded stranger, you have not
only liberated another county but have also scored first blood against the Wolf.
(IN-GAME)
(Start>Scribe)
The Wolf's swordsmen are here. We're doomed!
(Early>Wolf)
Not bad. I will not underestimate you next time.
(Mid>Hooded Stranger)
Here, take this. The crossbow design contained in these pages will help you
against your new foes. We pray that it is enough.
(Late>Wolf)
This time I will take you down.

>>141-----
(mission eleven brief)
Advance into the next of the Snake's counties and defend yourself against his
forces. This county shares its borders with the Wolf so stay alert as you will
need to react quickly if he decides to show his face.

>>142-----
(mission eleven objectives)

>>143-----
(mission eleven hints)
Beware of the swordsmen. Their metal armor makes them almost impervious to your
archers.
Macemen will prove more useful than spearmen here.
Archers are not effective against heavily armored units.
Build crossbows to defend against the Wolf's swordsmen.

>>144-----
(start act three)
Act Three: Fighting Alone
The celebrations after your recent victory are soon brought to an abrupt end when
news arrives of two tragic losses. The gluttonous Pig has taken one of your
counties and the honorable Lord Woolsack has been captured and brutally murdered in
the process.
(Pig)
I make Wool Sock die in much pain. I pull out teeth, cut off toes, break knees.
Most fun I have for long time. How did you do? Did you hunt down your prey?
(Wolf)
(Snarl).
(narrative)
Mission Twelve: The Ransom
(Sir Longarm)
I have spent a lot of time at the negotiating table of the King's captors and the
final ransom for his release has now been set. I need you to begin raising the
funds at once, using any means at your disposal.
(narrative)
You immediately send spies into the neighboring counties, hoping you will find a
suitable treasury to lighten.
(mission twelve post script)
With the ransom money already well on its way to Sir Longarm it will hopefully not
be long before the King is released.
(Dispatch from the Snake)
I know we have had our minor disagreements in the past, but I am certain we can
make amends. You have my word that if we declared a truce any conditions you make
will be honored.
(IN-GAME)
(Early>Scribe)
We have found some gold in the Snake's treasury , sire, but we still do not have
enough for the ransom. We will have to raise the rest of the gold by other means.
(Middle>Scribe)
The Snake's men have been spotted, what now sire?

>>145-----
(mission twelve brief)
Your spies report that the Snake has been ferrying gold into one of his counties
where he is hastily erecting a castle. Launch a surprise attack so you can take
his gold for yourself. We have sent along some tunnelers to help you take the
castle.

>>146-----
(mission twelve objectives)

>>147-----
(mission twelve hints)
Use tunnelers and macemen to breach the castle walls while using crossbowmen and
archers to protect them. Kill off all of the enemy units to take control of the
castle. Once the castle is under your control, make repairs and begin troop
production to protect against the enemy attacks.
Make good use of taxes and the trader to raise any additional gold needed.

>>148-----
Mission Thirteen: Snake Eyes
(Snake)
I find myself in desperate need of reinforcements. That insolent little child has
somehow managed to whittle me down to my final county and chosen to ignore my
perfectly reasonable request for a truce.
(Wolf)
My main force is marching half the length of the country to get to you. Hold him
off until I arrive, I want to rip him apart personally.
(Pig)
Some of my men are nearby. I will send them along to join in the fun!
(Post Script)
Once the Snake's bloody corpse lies at your feet you quickly rally your men and
make your escape before the Wolf can catch you.
(IN-GAME)
(Upon Victory>Snake)
Yes, I led your father into the trap but I swear I didn't kill him myself. Please,
no, arrgghhh!

>>149-----
(mission thirteen brief)
The Snake's new castle lies in a valley across from his old one! We have already
occupied his old fort, build it up until you are strong enough to lay siege to the
Snake's last castle to finish him for good. Should you succeed, pull out
immediately as we don't have nearly enough men to take on the Wolf's main army.
Raise some engineers to create the siege weapons you will need.

>>150-----
(mission thirteen objectives)

>>151-----
(mission thirteen hints)
Finish your castle walls before attempting to siege the Snake's castle. Make good
use of stone towers to defend your settlement. Use the trader to sell off extra
resources for gold. Iron is easily accessible here so you should start mining
activity early on.
Build catapults and protect them with portable shields when attacking the Snake's
castle.
Try to destroy towers mounted siege equipment first.

>>152-----
(narrative)
Mission Fourteen: The Mountain Pass
The Pig addresses the people of his newly conquered county.
(Pig)
Your realm is now mine so do as I say! All will pay a high tax and live a life of
pain.
(Sir Longarm)
I leave with the King this very day and we will soon return to our shores. Your
continuous assaults are providing us with the ideal distraction. We will come to
your aid with reinforcements as soon as possible.
(narrative)
With the Wolf closing in behind, you decide to split the enemy down the middle by
claiming one of the Pig's counties. The Pig is renowned for throwing vast
quantities of troops into battle and is not used to defeat. You are likely to be
massively out numbered so it is essential that you use the terrain to your best
advantage.
(Post Script)
Stalemate: Although you have hit back and taken one the Pig's lands, the Wolf is
snapping at your heels and has retaken the Snake's old county.

>>153-----
(mission fourteen brief)
Your scouts report that there is a fort built into the mountain pass up ahead. If
you fortify your garrison here, hopefully the Pig's horde will come to you. Our
mysterious friends have sent more plans, this time for a large tower mounted
ballista. This should prove invaluable against the Pig's war machines.

>>154-----
(mission fourteen objectives)

>>155-----
(mission fourteen hints)
Strengthen your defenses with ballistae. Train more troops to reinforce your
battlements. If it looks like you are about to lose a defensive section, retreat
and fortify the next defensive position.
Use ballistae to take out enemy battering rams.
Use killing pits in strategically placed areas.
Aim to continually replace troops, as they are lost.
Try and repair any damage to your castle as quickly as possible.
Use the trader to sell excess resources.

>>156-----
Mission Fifteen: Carving a Path
With the Wolf still hot on your trail and your troops becoming progressively more
battle worn, you find yourself in need of a place to hide and recuperate. The
fenlands seem to be the ideal location but the only way to get there is via the
Pig's home castle. As the Pig is away with his army, laying siege to his
stronghold appears to be a preferable option to taking on the Wolf.
(mission fifteen post script)
(Pig)
They wreck my home! I hunt them down like the dogs they are and make them pay long
time. First I string them up, then I burn their feet, then I break legs, then...
(narrative)
After fighting from one end of the country to the other, your men are close to
exhaustion so you pitch camp deep in the fenlands. Many of the counties you have
taken have already been recaptured however you are given fresh hope upon hearing
news that the king has returned.

>>157-----
(mission fifteen brief)
Fight your way through the Pig's home county and escape into the fenlands on the
other side. You will need to strike hard and fast before the Pig returns with his
main force. Storm the gatehouse of the Pig's castle with a ram, dispatch the
garrison and hide in the fenlands beyond.

>>158-----
(mission fifteen objectives)

>>159-----
(mission fifteen hints)
Use your tunnelers and battering rams to create breaches in the castle walls. Once
a breach has been made, take control of towers as quickly as possible.
Tunnelers have a long but limited range. Placing them too close to the castle
walls will leave them very vulnerable to missile fire.
Tunnelers work best when used in groups.

>>160-----
Act Four: For King and Country
You are not in camp for a day before a hooded stranger approaches your group.
(Black Monk)
We meet again, the brothers and I have long been praying for you to arrive here
safely. We are pleased to see that you have put the knowledge we have imparted to
you to good use but we now must ask you to return the favor. Duc Truffe (the Pig)
has been attempting to steal the arcane knowledge hidden within our library but
fortunately for us his troops are in error and lay siege to the wrong place. As we
speak my brothers are gathering the resources needed to rebuild our old monastery
where we have hidden our books. However we are not strong enough to withstand his
attacks for much longer. We can only hope that you find our research on the 'River
of Fire' as useful as our other designs.
Mission Sixteen: Fighting Retreat
(Wolf)
This is a waste of my time. Duc Truffe, find them and kill them. I have more
important issues to deal with.
(Pig)
I love a good hunt. I'll sniff them out, run them down and make sure they die
slow.
(Post Script)
With the task completed you make your withdrawal into the dense fog by cover of
darkness. From behind you there are angry shouts from the Pig's men as they scour
the monastery.
(IN-GAME)
(Middle>Message from Sir Longarm)
I have returned with the King and together we have taken back another county.

>>161-----
(mission sixteen brief)
Hold off against the Pig's attacks long enough to help the monks collect the stone
they need, then make your retreat. The swamp is your biggest advantage here as a
natural defense and as a source of pitch. The monks have told you about their
'River of Fire' so use pitch ditches to good effect. This land is also favorable
to the production of apples.

>>162-----
(mission sixteen objectives)

>>163-----
(mission sixteen hints)
Attempt to gather as much pitch as possible to burn enemy troops. You will need to
put braziers onto walls and place archers next to them to set your pitch ditches
alight. Build plenty of quarries and as many ox tethers as possible but make sure
you protect them well. You may want to build mainly wooden defenses in the early
stages.
You should increase pitch production early in the game; you will need plenty of it!
Site your quarries carefully; with skill you can get several sited on the stone
available.
Make deadly use of pitch ditches, if placed cunningly they will kill many troops
once set alight.

>>164-----
Mission Seventeen: Smokey Bacon
(Black Monk)
We must defend our library at all costs. If Duc Truffe were to get his grubby
hands on our knowledge then the kingdom would surely be doomed. We have one final
piece of knowledge to impart to you, the secret of boiling pitch. This may aid you
in the defense of the monastery.
(mission seventeen post script)
The oil pots have proven to be a devastatingly powerful addition to your arsenal
and this coupled with your clever tactical decisions have pushed back the Pig's
massive assault force.
(IN-GAME)
(Mid>Sir Longarm)
We have taken back control of another county and our numbers are growing.

>>165-----
(mission seventeen brief)
Use the resources you have gathered to rebuild and defend the ancient monastery.
Your army has left a clear path through the boggy grassland so it will not be long
before the Pig finds you. Use pikemen to block the Pig's troops and have engineers
boil pitch. To maximize the effect, pour the boiling pitch on his troops from
height.
>>166-----
(mission seventeen objectives)

>>167-----
(mission seventeen hints)
Place your quarry and ox tethers as soon as possible to gather the stone you need
to rebuild the castle. Build pitch rigs and place iron mines. Get engineers to
the walls with pots of boiling oil ready to pour on the enemy when they arrive.
Use your engineers to pour oil on the enemy; they will need quick and well-defended
routes to the smelter.

>>168-----
Mission Eighteen: End of the Pig
(Sir Longarm)
The people of the next county are at the end of their tether with the Pig's
oppressive taxes and are ready to rise-up against him. The time to avenge Lord
Woolsack's death is upon us, if you win this battle then the tides will truly have
begun to turn.
(mission eighteen post script)
With the Pig slain, only the Wolf stands in your way on the path to victory. Soon
after the dusts of battle have settled you receive word that Sir Longarm along with
the king have marched in to claim another county, tightening the noose around the
Wolf's neck.
(IN-GAME)
(Mid>Sir Longarm)
Our march continues and we have taken back another county.

>>169-----
(mission eighteen brief)
You have been charged to overthrow the Pig's final county by laying siege to his
stronghold. You have besieged this castle before but it has since been rebuilt and
now has a full garrison so will prove to be a far greater challenge. Our simple
but direct approach last time with the battering ram may not now be enough. Build
some siege towers to scale his tall walls.

>>170-----
(mission eighteen objectives)

>>171-----
(mission eighteen hints)
Here you will need to make use of many types of siege weaponry to storm the castle.
Rams, siege towers and tunnelers all have their part to play.
Use siege towers to get many of your men up onto the walls quickly.

>>172-----
Mission Nineteen: Penning in the Wolf
With the Wolf away assembling his forces, some of his recently won counties have
begun to revolt.
(Wolf)
Damn you and your King to hell! You may have killed the others but it is now that
you will learn to fight.
(Sir Longarm)
The war is going well but be cautious, as the Wolf is an entirely different animal
to any of those who have crossed your path so far. I am sending my finest
apothecary to your aid. I have a feeling he may be of some use.
(mission nineteen post script)
(Wolf)
Impressive, but when you next see my flag raised, I will be the one standing
beneath it.
(IN-GAME)
(Late>Scribe)
We have news that the King has walked in unopposed to take another county.

>>173-----
(mission nineteen brief)
Pen the Wolf in by reinforcing the defensive fort we have started on the edge of
his territory, then let his men come to you. They are likely to try and infect
your people with disease so ensure you have contingencies in place for their
arrival. Use swordsmen and mangonels to your best advantage.

>>174-----
(mission nineteen objectives)

>>175-----
(mission nineteen hints)
Get ready to defend stoutly! Build as many archers and crossbowmen as possible and
place them in the towers. Create lots of engineers, equip them with boiling oil
and position them along the outer walls.
Creating some healers will help to disperse any clouds of disease.
Build mangonels in your towers to cut down the enemy's troops.
Swordsmen are tough but you can defeat them if you use your boiling oil wisely.

>>176-----
Mission Twenty: Much Wailing and Gnashing of Teeth
As the Wolf's reign appears to be drawing to a close, more counties begin to
overthrow his henchmen and flock to your banner.
(Wolf)
Duc Beauregard may have led your father into the trap but I drove the sword through
his stomach. If you still have a hunger for vengeance, you know where to find me.
(narrative)
Although you have yet to hear word from Sir Longarm, you are still determined to
avenge your father's death and command your troops to march onwards. Upon arriving
in the next county, a message arrives from Sir Longarm.
(Sir Longarm)
I told you to be cautious, what were you thinking. You do not have a hope against
the Wolf on open ground. Take shelter in his deserted castle and hold them off
from where you are until I can get to you with reinforcements. I have sent some of
our forces in the area ahead to start fortifying the castle.
(mission twenty post script)
Although you have secured the county, the Wolf has managed to escape from your
clutches with many of his men.

>>177-----
(mission twenty brief)
Build up your forces and the castle itself and defend your current position until
Sir Longarm arrives with reinforcements. You will be defending yourself against
the Wolf's entire army in the biggest siege you have ever faced. Use knights to
conduct sorties out of the castle.

>>178-----
(mission twenty objectives)

>>179-----
(mission twenty hints)
Plenty of stone is needed for this mission to repair any damage caused by the
enemy. Food is limited so build as many farms as possible on the flat land
available.
Use squads of knights to sally forth from the castle and dispatch enemy siege
engines.

>>180-----
Mission Twenty-One: Final Vengeance
(Wolf)
As your father lay bleeding he begged me to end his life. It gave me pleasure to
watch his anguish and I will have that pleasure again watching yours. Step into my
lair and get ready to meet your maker.
King
I have heard of your many exploits but have not seen you in action so indulge me.
I shall give you charge of my army as well as the honor of marshalling the final
assault. Sir Longarm and I shall observe.
(end)
"For my father!" You plunge your sword up to the hilt into the Wolf's chest then
twist the blade. As he looks down at his open wound in astonishment you push him
over the parapet.
(Wolf)
You son of a...(Aaaarghhh).
(narrative)
With your father's death avenged and the King back on his rightful throne, you can
finally rest. Throughout the entire kingdom, there was much rejoicing and everyone
lived quite happily ever after.
(Tomato in face scene)
Well maybe not everyone.

(mission twenty-one brief)
Put an end to the Wolf using the combined forces of Sir Longarm and the King. You
have vanquished the majority of his main army but the Wolf still has many men left
and his stronghold is rumored to be impenetrable. He has discovered the secret of
boiling oil so do not approach too quickly. Instead make use of the new trebuchet
to weaken him from afar.

(mission 28 fake briefing)
This mission is a building mission with no combat or win conditions. We have
included it to allow you to learn how to play the game and let you experiment
designing your own castle.
Begin by finding a good sight for your castle and build a keep. You should scroll
around the map and find a site that has open space, but is close to a quarry area
(white boulders). Next site your granary and your starting food will be placed in
it. When peasants begin to appear around your campfire build a woodcutter's hut
(located in the Industry Buildings category) close to some trees. Once this is
done you can start collecting food. Hunter posts are easy to get up and running so
begin by placing a few of these.
Continue to expand your castle and experiment with the different building types
available. When you run out of peasants are around your campfire build a hovel or
two to increase your maximum population. (Make sure you keep increasing your food
production as your castle grows)
This should be enough to get you up and running so the rest is up to you!

>>186-----
(mission 29 fake briefing)
Objective: Produce 32 units of ale while fighting off attacks by the Rat and the
Wolf.
(Make sure you look at the quick start guide to playing Stronghold in the readme
file for tips on playing the game)
This mission will give you a feel for a siege that might occur midway through the
fighting campaign. In this mission the Snake has promised to send troops to attack
an enemy army, which is laying siege to one of your counties in exchange for 32
barrels of ale. The Rat and Wolf are intent on besieging your castle and
destroying you.
We have started you with a pre-built stronghold to defend. To recruit more troops,
select your barracks, which is located in the lower left of your castle, then click
on the relevant troop type from the panel. You will need the right amount of
weapons and armor in your armory as well as peasants available around the campfire
in front of your keep.
Outside of your oil smelter (the large cauldron next to the barracks) you will see
a group of engineers holding large pots. The pots contain boiling oil so move
these guys onto your castle walls. To pour the oil, select the last icon on their
control panel (Pour oil) then select an area or unit. When the red target cursor
appears left click to pour the oil.
To the right of the main gate at the front of your stronghold you will see a black
moat. This is a pitch ditch full to the brim with oil ready to be ignited. On the
wall behind this you will see a lone archer standing next to a brazier. When the
enemy comes close, target the pitch with this archer who will fire a flaming arrow
to ignite the oil. (Any archer placed next to a brazier will be capable of lighting
the pitch).
You don't have the ability to place any additional pitch ditches in this scenario,
so make sure you use it well!
Hints & Tips: Build two hops farms and two breweries early in the mission. You
don't necessarily need to build a large enough force to secure your castle. You
only need to hold out long enough to produce 32 units of ale.
Use your boiling oil well. Once you have poured oil, engineers will return to the
oil cauldron, refill their oil pot and wait for your command. Make sure to send
them up onto the sections of walls that are most heavily attacked.
Although it is possible to build inns in this mission it is probably best that you
don't unless you are having a lot of problems managing your popularity. Inns will
distribute the ale you are collecting among your peasantry making the mission a
little tougher.

Demo Mission Briefings
With the King gone but a few days, two of our adversaries have dispatched siege
forces to probe the strength of our defenses. The King now has need of you earlier
than planned. Make haste to the blasted heath to the South, there is a small
castle there. Bolster its defenses and hold off the enemy as best you can.
In readiness for his forthcoming crusade, the King has ordered that the royal
armory be restocked. Forthwith, your fiefdom is to supply His Majesty's steward
with a quantity of weapons. You are to have the shipment of weapons ready for
dispatch before the King and his army set forth. A local trader here sells iron,
which you can buy to produce some of the weapons needed.
Invasion
A Proclamation
(Demo mission 2 strategy)
Increase the castle resource and food production, then focus on building military
units. Use pitch extraction and build additional pitch ditches to hold off the
enemy attackers. Try to protect your farms as much as possible. Placing weapons
workshops close to the stockpile and the armory will increase their efficiency.
Place pitch ditches in areas you think the enemy are likely to attack, in front of
gatehouses, walls, or next to your outlying town buildings.
Make sure you position spearmen on the walls to push off enemy ladders.
Use your mangonel, with its 'attack here' option, to target large groups of enemy
soldiers.
(Demo mission 1 strategy)
Start by building a few woodcutter huts, placing them near trees will speed up wood
production. Next place apple and dairy farms to get food production up and
running. Lastly concentrate on weapons production.
Sell apples and buy iron from the trader, but be careful you don't run out of food.
Once dairy is functioning, you may want to prohibit your population from eating
apples. You can set this option in the granary. This will allow you to stock up
on apples.
You should plan on building multiple fletcher and blacksmith workshops.

(Eco strategy/hints - Mission One)
Place a few woodcutter's huts and hunter's posts, to start building up your food
and wood stocks. Next start to place the dairy farms as you acquire wood. Hops
farms should follow and then a couple of brewers workshops.

>>193-----
(Mission Two)
Valley floor space is limited, so use it wisely. Get some apple orchards up and
running first, followed by a fletcher's workshop to produce bows and an armory to
store them in. Finally build a blacksmith to produce the swords you need.
Although there is no iron on the map you can raise the gold you need to buy it, by
either trading at the marketplace or raising taxes.

>>194-----
(Mission Three)
Place some woodcutter's huts and a few wheat farms to get going and then build a
mill and a bakery or two to start bread production. Once you have a steady supply
of food coming in you will need to protect the production chain. Create some bows
and then build a barracks to train a few archers, as these will help you should you
experience problems with rabbits eating your crops.
Keep a careful eye on your food stocks as you may experience problems with your
wheat supply.
One mill can quite easily supply a number of bakeries with flour.
>>195-----
(Mission Four)
Once you are happy that your food supply is secure, start to build as many quarries
as you can. You will need to place many ox tethers to transport the stone back to
your stockpile quickly. Finish the missing wall sections in the castle as soon as
you have stone available.
Speed is of the essence here so aim to finish the castle as quickly as possible.
If the enemy troops arrive before it is complete we are lost.

>>196-----
(Mission Five)
Although your popularity appears stable, you are in a potentially dangerous
situation. With double rations you will soon run out of food. You have 2 choices
here, continue on as a fearsome tyrant or become a more kindly lord. You can
complete the task using either approach and it would be worthwhile repeating the
mission and trying both techniques.
If you play as a bad lord, your people will be more productive. Sell this surplus
to supply them with them extra food or to bribe your way to popularity.
Playing as a good lord will mean that your people are much less productive. You
will need to work harder to feed them. Use the boost you are getting to your
popularity to tax them much more heavily.

>>197-----
Eco Mission Briefing
The royal court is soon to host a great banquet. We need you to found a small
village for the production of ale and cheese. Find a clearing in the woods to the
south of the King's castle and get to work immediately.
The King's armory is depleted. Go to the valley to the east of the castle and
begin weapons production. The fertile valley floor is ideal for apple growing
which you can use to feed your people. A local trader here trades in iron, which
you can buy to produce some of the weapons needed.
We now need to establish a small town to provide grain for the castle. The plains
to the west of the castle should provide an ideal location. Go there and get the
town up and running.
Our scouts have spotted raiders to the north. We have started building a castle
into the mountain pass north of here. Take charge of the construction and finish
the castle to block their approach.
Finally, we need to replenish the castle treasury. We have a contract to supply
pitch to a foreign buyer. Go to the old castle in the marsh and expand pitch
production. A cruel master has ruled the people there. It is up to you whether
you continue his policies or adopt a kinder approach.

Siege That is a special Siege mode that challenges players to capture a castle
built with limited resources.
Siege That maps are created in the Map Editor. Map makers are given a maximum of
1000 stone and 1500 gold to build and defend a castle. Stone is used to build
castle buildings; gold is used for castle defenses, defensive troops and siege
equipment.
Before playing a Siege That map, attacking players are allocated 2000 points to
spend on troops and siege equipment. Each troop type and siege equipment are
allocated a value depending on their worth. Players need to recruit an army that
they think is good enough to capture the castle. At the end of the game, the
attacker receives a score that reflects how successful (or unsuccessful) the castle
assault was.

Castle 11
Castle 12
Situated on a rocky outcrop just off the coast of Scotland, Dunnottar has always
been a key part of Scotland’s defenses, due to its strategic location overlooking
shipping lanes. With two sides of the castle surrounded by sheer cliff face,
Dunnottar is as impenetrable as it is impressive.
Warkworth started life as a traditional wooden motte and bailey castle, built on a
defensive mound in a loop of the River Coquet. In the 16th century it was rebuilt,
the walls reinforced with stone, but keeping the traditional structure of the
castle. The castle set the scene for Shakespeare’s Henry IV Part 2, where it was
described as a "worm-eaten hold of ragged stone."
Located high on a rocky peninsula and surrounded by the tidal waters of the River
Cleddau, Pembroke Castle started life as a wooden fortress and was the first Norman
settlement in South West Wales. The Earl of Pembroke, William Marshall, oversaw
the construction of the stone castle and held it until his death in 1219. The
castle was regularly attacked by the Welsh but thanks to the constant improvements
made to the fortress they failed to make an impact.
Warwick Castle is an excellent example of a well preserved English medieval castle.
Any attacker determined enough to get through the first set of gates would find
themselves trapped in the infamous Killing Ground where boiling oil and deadly
rocks would rain down on them. Founded in 1068 by William the Conqueror on his
move northwards from London, the wooden fort of Warwick controlled the roads and
the river crossing down to London. In 1260 stone mining commenced and the castle
we see today began to take shape.
At the center of an artificial lake, Bodiam Castle has a round tower on each corner
and a square tower in the middle of each wall giving it a symmetrical appearance.
A Norman family called the Bodehams took control of the area and built a motte and
bailey castle. To protect the Rother valley, Edward Dalyngrigge gained a royal
license to strengthen and crenellate. He used this to build a totally different
castle on a brand new site. Sir William Waller gutted the interior of the castle
during the English Civil War but left the outside virtually intact.
On a cliff edge overlooking the sea, Hastings was a brilliant example of a motte
and bailey fort. Upon landing in 1066, William the Conqueror erected two
prefabricated motte and bailey castles he had brought with him in his ships.
Violent storms ravaged the south coast in 1287 eroding the soft sandstone cliffs
beneath the castle and parts of it were lost to the sea. Hastings was never
attacked by military force but over the years has seen its fair share of peasant
uprisings.
This imposing castle, Château Gaillard, known as "The Stronghold of Richard the
Lionheart", was built to be impregnable. When it finally fell, during Philip
Augustus’s conquest of Normandy in the early 13th Century, it was after 7 months of
blockade. Legend has it that the besiegers finally gained access to the inner
defenses after a brave soldier climbed up through the latrine shaft to gain access.
Château de Coucy stood for seven hundred years as a symbol of power, and had the
largest keep in Europe. During the First World War, the castle was occupied by the
German forces, who turned it into a military command post, due to its proximity to
Paris. The castle having survived for centuries finally, and tragically, fell
towards the end of the war, destroyed by the occupying forces as they retreated.
Situated high above the town of Braubach on the east bank of the Rhine, Marksburg
castle was built by the Freemen of the town in the 12th century to enforce tolls on
the river Rhine. It never faced a serious attack and is the only hilltop castle on
the Rhine never to be destroyed and has been continuously inhabited for more than
seven hundred years.
Located on top of a hill in the plains of central Europe, this wooden hill fort
dates back to 600 BC when its natural defensive position made it attractive to Iron
age tribes wishing to control the surrounding area. Later its proximity to the
Danube River and location on some of Europe's busiest trade routes made sure it was
often a target for rulers wishing to control and tax commerce. It is known to have
been completely demolished and rebuilt at least 3 times.

Message from Simon & Eric
After over 20 years it's great to be back, walking the walls of the old castle.
We've missed the sights, the sounds and occasionally, I swear, the smells of
medieval life as it truly was (well, at least in our heads!). To new players, a
big "Welcome" and to returning Strongholders, "Welcome back" and many thanks for
trusting us once again. Maybe be on the look out for some wood, sire, you might be
needing it.

the middle ages
Ahhhr...Life in the old castle.
‘Appy times them were.
The people were oh so much friendlier...
Oh and how we feasted...
...and courted the fair maidens as well.
There was work, of course...
Sharpening our minds...
Making us strong...
But mainly, I remember it as...a happy time.
Oh yes...and then there were the neighbors...
