The Legend of Tangkuban Perahu

Once upon a time, in West Java, there lived a wise king who had a beautiful daughter.
Her name was Dayang Sumbi. She liked weaving very much. One day, she was weaving a
piece of cloth. Suddenly, one of her tools fell to the ground. She was very tired at the time so
she was too lazy to pick it up. Then she shouted out loud.

Dayang sumbi: “Anybody there? Please bring me my tool and I will give you a special
present! If you are a female, I will take you as my sister. If you are a male, I will marry you.”

Suddenly a male dog named Tumang came. He brought her tool to her. Dayang sumbi
was shocked. She regretted her words but she could deny it. So, she had to marry Tumang
and leave her father. Several months later they had a son. His name was Sangkuriang. He
often went hunting to the woods using his bow and arrow. When he went hunting, Tumang is
always with him
One day, Dayang sumbi was in a mood to eat a deer’s heart.

Dayang sumbi: “Sangkuriang, are you going hunting today? I want to eat a deer’s heart so
much. Can you please bring me one?”
Sangkuriang: “Of course, mom. Whatever you say, I will give it to you. Tumang, where are
you? Come on, we have to hunt for a deer.”

Then, Sangkuriang went to the woods with his bow and arrow with his faithful dog,
Tumang. But after several days in the woods, Sangkuriang could not find any deers. They
were all nothing to found. Sangkuriang was exhausted and desperate.
Sangkuriang: “Tumang, do you find any deers?”
Tumang: “woof woof!”
Sangkuriang: “Oh God, where can I find a deer? I don’t want to disappoint my mom. Oh! I
know!”

Sangkuriang then called Tumang to come and killed him. He did not know that
Tumang was his father. So, he killed Tumang without any hesitation. When he reached home,
he gave Tumang’s heart to his mother without feeling any regrets

Sangkuriang: “Mom, this is a deer’s heart.”

Dayang Sumbi: “Thank you, my son” she smiled.
Dayang Sumbi: “Sangkuriang! Are you sure this is a deer’s heart? Don’t you dare lie to me!
It is Tumang’s heart, isn’t it? Why did you kill him!?
Sangkuriang: “Mom, I’m really sorry. Please forgive me for my mistake.”
Dayang sumbi: “You are such a bad son. I hate you, Sangkuriang. Go away!”
Sangkuriang: “Okay, mom. I will go now, I’m sorry.”

She was in full of anger. She hit Sangkuriang’s head. Sangkuriang wqs wounded by
the impact. There was a scar in his head. She also kicked her son out of her house.
Sangkuriang left her mother in sadness.
Many years passed and Sangkuriang grew to become a strong young man. He
wandered everywhere around the world. One day, he arrived at his own village but he did not
realized it. There, he met Dayang Sumbi. At the time when he met Dayang Sumbi, she was
given eternal beauty by God,
But then, Dayang sumbi recognized a scar on Sangkuriang’s head.

Dayang Sumbi: “Sangkuriang, why there is a scar on your head?”

Sangkuriang: “Oh, when I was a child, my mom hit me on my head.”
Dayang Sumbi: “HUH??? REALLY??”
Dayang Sumbi: “Sangkuriang, please believe me that I’m your mother”
Sangkuriang: “WHAT!? No, I don’t believe it. I will keep marrying you.”

Dayang Sumbi was very shocked. She now knew that strong young man was his son.
It was impossible for them to get married. She told him but he did not believe her.
Sangkuriang wished that they could get married soon. So, Dayang Sumbi gave him a very
difficult condition
Dayang sumbi: “Sangkuriang, if you want to marry me. I have a wish for you. I want you to
build a lake and a big boat in one night. I need them for our honeymoon. Can you do that?”
Sangkuriang: “What!? Impossible! But, it’s okay. I will do anything for you.”

With the help of genies and spirits, Sangkuriang then began to build a lake and a big
boat in one night. By midnight, he had finished the lake by building a dam in Citarum river.
Then he started building the boat. It was almost dawn when he nearly finished it.
Meanwhile, Dayang Sumbi kept watching on them. She was very worried when she knew this.
So she created lights in the east.

Sangkuriang: “Huh? Troops! Stop your work! It’s already dawn. The sun will rise soon.
Quickly, go home, go home!
Dayang sumbi: “Sangkuriang, you could not fulfil my wishes. That means we can not get
married. I hope you can understand that.”
Sangkuriang: “You cheated! You made the light to trick my troops! Because of that, I could
not fulfil your wishes!”

Sangkuriang was very angry, so he kicked the boat and flipped it. Then the boat
turned upside down. So to this day, that upside down boat is known famously as Tangkuban
Perahu, which means upside down boat.
