FAIRS IN
MAHASEEL FESTIVAL- KATARA
RAVI ROHAN KUMAR

INTRODUCTION

The Mahaseel Festival, currently underway at Katara Southern area in

Doha, exceeds its role as a mere marketplace for local fruits, vegetables,
plants, and ornamentals. It has evolved into a cultural platform,
spotlighting Qatar’s agricultural heritage and ingenuity to the public.
The festival’s showcase of premium local produce, encompassing fruits,
vegetables, and flowers. The festival offers an array of food items such
as honey products and dates.

The aim of the visit was to explore organic farming, to produce quality
food without the use of chemical pesticides or artificial fertilizers. Using
environmentally-friendly farming practices, they grow apples, peaches,
pears, cherries, berries, vegetables. We experienced the natural world in
a new way and make a vital connection between the social, ecological,
and economic importance of agriculture in our lives.
LOCAL MARKET

During our tour to Katara’s local trade market we took keen interest in
seeing all stalls offering Qatari agricultural products including
vegetables, fresh fruits, honey, poultry, dairy, fresh juices and flowers.
Apart from the hygiene and quality standards of the showcased local
products. During our tour we saw people learning more about growing
plants which will create awareness on the various phases of planting
trees starting with preparing the soil, planting seeds, irrigation,
respiration, and methods of providing best care to plants and fruits”.

We saw that a number of Qatari farms have also started producing

organic vegetables such as broccoli, carrots, and tomatoes. The farmers
also stressed that no harmful chemical was used to grow the crops.
Farmers sold these organic plants in a reasonable price. Plantation of
organic plants will help us grow fresh organic fruits and vegetables that
makes our house an organic kitchen too. Prices of some items at the
festival are 5% to 10% lower compared to the commercial outlets while
others cost almost the same.
TRADE FAIR
Many farmer’s from different countries like Oman, Azerbaijan, Saudi sold
fresh “Honey and Dates”. Other than plants, fruits and vegetables we saw
many vendors selling exotic perfumes, jewellery, traditional attire’s, carpets,
delicious sweets and handicraft shops. There were many local hand made
products.
Finally, apart from Mahaseel Festival we saw the scenic beauty of Pearl
Qatar, ST Regis Hotel, katara beach, the glass house and greenery all around.
Our visit to Katara offered us with great insights into the vibrant world of
local markets and trade fairs. Engaging with local vendors helped us develop
a better knowledge of their products.
