Research Question: How effective is Corporal Punishment as a disciplinary approach to children ages 5-
12 in the Golden Grove community?
Research Statement: This study is to investigate how effective is corporal punishment as a disciplinary
approach in children in the Golden Grove community.
The continuous use of corporal punishment as a method of child discipline by those entrusted with their
care is one of the primary concerns regarding the current vulnerability of Caribbean youths. This study
was carried out to obtain data on the attitudes, practices, and influencing factors among educators and
parents within the community of Golden Grove, as it relates to corporal punishment.
Although the Antiguan government has brought their laws into compliance with the provisions of the
Convention on the Rights of the Child, positive disciplinary messages have been undermined and such
harmful practices have been allowed to continue due to a lack of administrative acceptance that the
practice is improper.
There is little data on the topic at hand within the island, however,
Antigua has similar issues as it relates to the other Caribbean islands, namely ST. Kitts, Anguilla…
