QUESTIONS
1.
i) Active absorption, and
ii) Passive absorption
2.
i) External environmental factors, and
ii) Internal environmental factors
3. In alkaline soil condition and marshes soil water absorption by plants is usually poor; this
condition is known as physiological dryness.
4. Translocation process
5. The phloem vessel
6. The optimum soil temperature for water absorption by maize plants in smallholder farm in
Middle Drift is between 10ºC to 30ºC.
7. We are given that 1 hectare=10000 m2
and 1mm = 0.001m so 5mm of per hectare per day=5×0.001m
=0.005 m
Rate = 0.005m × 10000 m2
= 50 m3
Therefore, the rate of evapotranspiration 0f 5mm of water per hectare per day is 50 m3.
8. From the conversion table 1MJ m-2 day-1 = 0.408 mm day-1
Therefore, the vaporization rate will be
70% × 55 MJ m-2 day-1 = 0.07 × 55 × 0.408 mm day-1
= 15.7 mm day-1
9. 1 m3 ha-1 day-1 = 0.245 MJ m-2 day-1 so 2 m3 ha-1 day-1 = 2 × 0.245 MJ m2 day-1
= 0.5 MJ m2 day-1
Therefore, the energy required for evapotranspiration of 2 m3 ha-1 day-1 to take place on a
smallholder farm in Qunu is 0.5 MJ m2 day-1.
10. If the latent heat of vaporization (λ) is 2.45MJkg-1 at 20°C which means 2.45 MJ per m2 is
needed to vaporize 0.001m or 1 mm of water. Therefore, 2.45 MJ per m2 × 3 mm is equivalent to
7.4 MJ per m2.
So, the energy required to vaporize 3mm or water at the same temperature is 7.4 MJ m-2.
