Knotter gearbox - Assemble

Prior operation:
Disassemble the gearbox, refer to Knotter gearbox - Disassemble (68.110).

NOTE: For gearbox parts details, refer to Knotter gearbox - Sectional view (68.110).

1. Pinion shaft (28) assembly: press the cone of the

bearing (2) on the shaft all the way against the gear.
2. Install the retaining ring (23) and the spacer (24) in
the gearbox (4).
3. Install the same shims (22) as were removed from
against the bearing (2).
4. Install the cups of the bearings (2) in the gearbox (4).
5. Install the pre-assembled pinion shaft (28) from in-
side the gearbox (4).
6. Use a wooden block against the end of the pinion
gear and drive on the cone of the bearing (2). BSF4982Y 1

7. Install the same shims (25) and (1) as were removed

from against the bearing and add the retaining ring
(26). Check that the preload on the bearings is be-
tween 0.4 - 0.8 N·m (0.295 - 0.590 lb ft). If not adjust
with the shims (1) and (25) as required.
NOTE: Do not install the seal (27) and the retaining ring
(29) at this time.
8. Press the two friction bearings (10) into the flange
(17) hub one from each end. Use the tool described
in the disassembly, if available. Refer to Knotter
gearbox - Disassemble (68.110).
NOTE: The friction bearings (10) must be flush with the
flange (17) hub on the ends.

9. If removed, install the bearing (21) and the seal (20)

in the gearbox housing (4).
10. Install the flange (17) into the gearbox housing (4),
taking care not to damage the seal (20).
11. Add the required shims (16) to fill the gap between
the retaining ring (19) and the bearing (21). Install
the retaining ring (19).
12. Place the shims (16) that were removed and then
the spacer (14) on the flange (17) hub, against the
retaining ring (19).

BSF4976Z 3

13. Install the gear (8). Check the gear backlash, it must
be between 0.2 - 0.4 mm (0.008 - 0.016 in). The
gears must also make contact near the center of the
teeth. Remove the gear (8) and adjust the shims (16)
under the spacer (14) as required. If proper gear
tooth engagement cannot be achieved, it may be
necessary to adjust the shims on the pinion shaft (28)
(see figure 1). This will require removing the pinion
shaft and changing the shim thickness against the in-
ner bearing ring. Any change to the shim thickness
at the inner bearing ring will require a corresponding
change to the shim thickness at the outer bearing ring
to maintain the bearing preload.

BSF4975Y 4

14. Add the shims (13) that were removed on top of the
gear (8).

BSF4975Z 5

15. Install the bearing (12) in the gearbox cover (6).

place with four bolts. Check that there is no end play
of the flange (17) in the gearbox. The bearings must
rotate with a preload between 0.3 - 0.6 N·m (0.221 -
0.443 lb ft). If required remove the cover and adjust
the shim (13) thickness between the gear and the
bearing in the cover.
NOTE: Open and close the gearbox as necessary.

BSF4972X 7

17. Once the correct value is obtained, open the gear-

box, distribute sealing compound ( LOCTITE® 574,
OMNIFIT® FD30 or PERMABOND® 141) around the
perimeter of the gearbox housing or cover.
18. Install the cover (6). Match the marks made when
disassembling to place correctly. Use the bolts (5)
and (9). Rotate the gears by hand. This will detect
any problems before the seals are installed.
19. Install the recessed hex socket head screw (7).

Pump and reservoir Pump - Dynamic description

Intake stroke
The electric motor drives the eccentric cam (1). The pis-
ton (2) follows the circumference of the cam due to the
spring (3).

During the intake stroke, the piston (2) is moved back-

wards. This reduces the pressure in the pump, and
grease is drawn into the pump through the inlet port.

BSD1898A 1

Exhaust stroke
Further rotation of the cam moves the piston (2) forwards.
The inlet port closes and the pressure in the pump in-
creases.

The check valve opens and grease is forced into the sys-
tem through check valve (4).

Grease lines manifold - Dynamic description

Preface
The distributor block divides the grease input out to the
connected lubrication points irrespective of the distance
and the back pressure.

Each piston must have completed its stroke before the

next piston can move.

Color legend for the following images:

• Red = pump pressure
• Blue = delivery pressure

BSD1899A 1

Phase 1
In the start position, all the pistons are located on the far
right.

The grease enters the divider from above and flows

through the divider to the right-hand end of the piston (A).

The piston (A) is moved to the left under pressure of the

lubricant, causing the lubricant ahead of the left-hand end
of the piston (A) to be dispensed to the outlet (2) (see the
blue color).

ZED0100Z 2

Phase 2
Once the piston (A) has reached its left-hand final posi-
tion, the junction channel to the right-hand end of the pis-
ton (B) is opened.

The lubricant which flows from above moves the piston

(B) to the left, causing the lubricant ahead of the left-hand
end of the piston (B) to be dispensed to the outlet (7).

Lubrication system - Grease lubrication system

Phase 3
When the piston (B) has reached its left-hand final posi-
tion, the junction channel to the right-hand end of the pis-
ton (C) is opened.

The lubricant which is fed from above moves the piston

(C) to the left, causing the lubricant ahead of the left-hand
end of the piston (C) to be dispensed to the outlet (5).

ZED0102Z 4

Phase 4
The channel to the right hand end of the piston (D) is now
open.

The lubricant moves the piston (D) to the left, causing the
lubricant ahead of the left-hand end of the piston (D) to be
dispensed to the outlet (3).

ZED0103Z 5

Phase 5
In phase 4, the piston (D) has opened the junction channel
to the left-hand end of the piston (A).

The lubricant flowing in, moves the piston (A) to the right,
causing the lubricant ahead the right-hand end of the pis-
ton (A) to be dispensed to the outlet (1).

Phase 6
Once the piston (A) has reached its right-hand final posi-
tion, the junction channel to the left-hand end of the piston
(B) is opened.

The lubricant which flows from above moves the piston

(B) to the right, causing the lubricant ahead of the right-
hand end of the piston (B) to be dispensed to the outlet
(8).

ZED0105Z 7

Phase 7
The channel to the left-hand end of the piston (C) is
opened.

The lubricant which is fed from above moves the piston

(C) to the right, causing the lubricant ahead of the right-
hand end of the piston (C) to be dispensed to the outlet
(6).

ZED0106Z 8

Phase 8
When the piston (C) has reached its left-hand final posi-
tion, the junction channel to the left-hand end of the piston
(D) is opened.

The lubricant which flows from above moves the piston

(D) to the right, causing the lubricant ahead of the right-
hand end of the piston (D) to be dispensed to the outlet
(4).

Lubrication system - Grease lubrication system

Phase 9
In phase 9, the piston (D) has opened the junction channel
to the left-hand end of the piston (A) is opened.

The lubricant moves the piston (A) to the right, causing

the lubricant ahead of the right-hand end of the piston (A)
to be dispensed to the outlet (2).

A complete distribution sequence is finished and a new

cycle can begin.

ZED0100Z 10

Cross-porting
Installing a closure plug in one or more outlets may com-
bine the outputs from the adjacent outlets. The lubricant
from a plugged outlet is redirected to the next adjacent
outlet in descending numerical order.

The outlets (1) and (8) must not be plugged since they
have no cross-port passage to the next adjacent outlet.

In the figure 11, the outlets (5) and (3) are cross-ported
and directed through the outlet (1).

In this example, outlet (1) will dispense three times as

much lubricant as outlet (7).
ZED0108Z 11
The tube ferrules in outlets (1) and (7) block the cross-
port passage so that lubricant flow is directed through the
outlets.

Visual monitoring
All the divider blocks (except the main divider) are
equipped with an indicator pin which is connected to a
piston.

The main divider has a sensor instead of the indicator pin.

During the lubrication distribution, the piston moves back

and forth so also the indicator pin moves back and forth.

If there is a blockage in the system during the distribution

cycle, the indicator pin stops moving.

Amount of pulses
The grease flow through the system drives the pin of the
sensor on the main divider in and out, as the divider cy-
cles. A sensor mounted on the main divider counts the
number of pin movements or pulses.

BSF5227A 13

When the required number of pin movements have been reached, the machine controller stops the electric pump,
until the next cycle.

Every machine has a predefined number of pulses for a complete grease feed to all the lubrication points. The pump
is switched off by the controller as soon as the required amount of pulses has been reached.

The amount of pulses will vary by model:

• 4-knotter rotor cutter machines and all standard machines: 5 pulses

• 6-knotter rotor cutter machines: 6 pulses
• 4-knotter packer cutter machines: 7 pulses

The required number of pin movements must be seen within 15 min. This maximum “grease on” time is a safety
feature for the machine to ensure that the greasing cycle is not interrupted for a long-term period.

If this maximum grease time is exceeded, the controller will stop the pump and a "Greasing system” warning message
will appear on the monitor. This is an indication of a problem (no grease left in the reservoir or a blockage in the
system).
NOTE: The pump will however restart for the next cycle at the selected interval even if the warning message is still
illuminated.

Greasing cycle interval

The electrical grease pump delivers grease to the main divider which will distribute the grease to the other dividers
of the centralized greasing system. All the grease points covered by the centralized greasing system will be supplied
with grease during each greasing cycle interval set by the operator.

The greasing cycle interval refers to the “greasing pump” off time. The shorter the “pump off” time, the more intense
the lubrications will be.

• Off: greasing system continuously OFF

• Low: 27 min
• Normal: 13 min
• High: 4 min
• Test mode: greasing system continuously ON
