4.0 CALIBRATION
Rk-5700 series radiometers are versatile, wide-range systems for optical power measurement. The 5700-
series readouts, operating with a variety of interchangeable probes, can measure average power levels from
picowatts to kilowatts, at wavelengths from UV to Far-IR.
Higher power levels are served by the RkT-series of DC thermopile probes, which are usable with CW or
continuously pulsed radiation. Thermopiles are available in broadband, general purpose models or
optimized for specific laser wavelengths. Most probes can be supplied with optional internal electrical
heating for user calibration.
The RkP-pyroelectric and silicon probes utilize optical chopping and synchronous detection circuitry for
superior stability and noise rejection at low power levels. An integrated, removable chopper assembly is
standard with these probes, or an external optical chopper may be used.
The Rk-5710 single-channel readout displays average power in watts or dBm with up to 41/2-digit resolution.
The 64 character LCD display also includes a linear bar graph indicator for relative power. A Background
Cancel control subtracts ambient radiation levels from displayed values. A digital entry calibration factor
is provided to compensate for losses in filters or attenuators, or to normalize detector response. Other
features include autoranging, selectable averaging time and a DC analog output for level monitoring. An
optional GPIB interface is available.
The Rk-5720 Ratiometer readout provides two independent channels with all the features of the Rk-5710.
The readout simultaneously displays each channel's power level and the ratio of the two. Any of the available
probes can be used in combination for ratio comparisons. Rk-5720 options include a GPIB interface and an
analog DC ratio output.

2.0 INSTALLATION
Rk-5700 readouts are powered by 120/240 volt, 50-60 Hz AC lines. Before plugging in the unit, make
sure the voltage selector card on the line cord receptacle is set for the available line voltage. The voltage
setting is visible on the selector card just below the fuse when the line cord is unplugged.
1. Remove line cord from receptacle and slide fuse cover door to the left.
3. Insert tip of long-nose pliers or similar tool into hole on selector card and pull out card.
4. Orient selector card so desired voltage is at top left corner. Push card firmly into slot. Selected
voltage should be visible in card slot cutout.
5. Move FUSE PULL to the right and install appropriate fuse (1/4 amp @ 120V or 1/8 amp @
240V). Slide cover door to the right and plug in line cord.
15
2.0 INSTALLATION
2.3 Setting Up
5700-series readouts have a tilt bail on the underside to angle the unit for convenient operation. The LCD
display is designed for optimum viewing when placed at or below eye-level, the typical position for benchtop
use.
Probe Installation
Probes install at the D-connectors on the back panel. When only one probe is used with the Rk-5720
Ratiometer readout, it should be plugged into the Channel A connector. Thermopile probes are connected
via the preamp interface supplied with each unit. The interface module attached to the back-panel D-
connector and the probe head connects to the module with the supplied BNC cable. For reliable operation,
use the connector latches to secure thermopile interface modules to the readout.
When the readout is turned on, the model numbers of the installed probes will appear on the display for about
five seconds.
AC Probe Considerations
If an AC probe is used with an Rk-570C chopper, the probe and chopper must be connected with one of the
supplied modular line cables. Use the short, straight cable when the probe and chopper are mechanically
coupled and the long, coiled cable for operating the chopper while physically detached from the probe.
When using AC probes with an external chopper, disconnect all 570C chopper cables and, preferably, detach
the chopper units from the probes. The 570C chopper detaches by turning the thumbscrew on the underside
of the chopper body clockwise until the probe can be lifted straight off. If the 570C chopper is left attached
during external chopping, make sure the 570C's chopper blade does not obstruct the probe aperture. Insert
a cotton swab or the eraser end of a pencil into the 570C nose cone and move the blade out of the way.
A synchronization signal from the external chopper must be supplied to the SYNC IN connector on the back
panel and the readout set to EXT CHOP when operating with an external chopper.
Water-cooled thermopile probes must be connected to a running water supply with adequate flow rate
before exposing to high radiation levels. Connect the water supply with flexible tubing to the annular
fittings which extend from the side of the probe head.

20
3.0 OPERATION
The function of the BKGND control is to eliminate ambient radiation levels from displayed power readings.
During AC operation, all radiation in the chopper's field of view is subject to synchronous modulation and
will contribute to the measured power. Unless the chopper is placed directly at the source being measured,
some background radiation will likely affect the readings. By blocking the radiation of interest, the
background radiation level can be measured and then effectively canceled by using the BKGND control.
Whatever power level is present when the BKGND key is pressed is subtracted from all subsequent power
readings until the BKGND function is disengaged.
Thermopile probes respond to all ambient radiation. Being direct-coupled to the readout, thermopiles may
also introduce small DC offsets which affect the values displayed. Both these effects can be countered with
the BKGND control. Block the source to be measured and allow the power reading to stabilize, then press
the BKGND key.
Background cancellation is only effective when the ambient radiation level is stable and not so large that
signal levels of interest cannot be adequately resolved. In these cases, efforts must be made to eliminate
sources of large or varying background radiation from the immediate environment. For AC operation,
placing the chopper at the source to be measured, either by using an external chopper or by operating the Rk-
570C chopper separated from its probe, can effectively reduce background radiation to manageable levels.
If background levels are negligible, the BKGND control can be used to provide relative power measure-
ments. By using BKGND to store a reference power level, changes in received power can be directly
displayed. If BKGND is used for this function, remember that the logarithmic readout will no longer be in
dBm, but in dB relative to the stored dBm value.
21
3.0 OPERATION
The CAL function compensates for losses in optical filters or attenuators so that the readout displays true
power levels. The internal calibration factors, which normally equal 1, can be set for any transmission value
between 0.1000 and 1.000. The LED above a CAL key is lit whenever a value other than 1 has been stored.
The value entered is retained internally by the readout until the user enters a new value.
To enter a calibration factor, press the CAL key on the front panel. The current value, if not already displayed,
will appear on the readout, along with the message that only values between 0.1 and 1 are valid. A blinking
cursor will appear over the first digit, indicating that the first number entered will be placed in that position.
During cal factor entry, the front-panel keys serve as a numeric keypad. The corresponding digit for each
key is shown in the lower right corner of the key legend.
Enter the first digit by pressing the appropriate digit key. The selected number will appear on the display and
the cursor will advance to the next digit position. (If a digit key pressed which would produce an invalid cal
factor, an "Error" message flashes and the keypress is ignored).
Enter the remaining 4 digits and the cursor will return to the first digit position. Press the CAL key again to
store the displayed value and restore the front panel to normal operation.
If an error is made in entering the cal factor, the entire value must be re-entered. A value can only be stored
while the cursor is in the first-digit position.
Since values greater than 1.0000 are invalid, when "1" is entered as the first digit all subsequent digits are
set to "0" and the cursor remains in the first-digit position. Thus pressing CAL-1-CAL returns the value to
1.
For two-channel Rk-5720 operation, the cal factors may be viewed without alteration by pressing CAL to
display the value, then pressing CAL again to resume normal operation.
22
3.0 OPERATION
3.2 AC Probes
For Rk-5700 series readouts, "internal chopping" refers to operation of the RkP-575 and RkP-576 AC probes
with the Rk-570C accessory chopper. The synchronization signal from this chopper is fed back to the readout
via the probe the probe connector so no external SYNC IN connection is required.
The Rk-570C can be mechanically coupled to an AC probe to form a single, compact assembly; or, it can
operate while physically detached from the probe in applications which would normally require a separate
external chopper. In either case, the Rk-570C must be electrically connected to its probe with one of the
modular line cords supplied. The short straight cable is for use when the probe and chopper are attached,
while the longer coiled cable permits the probe and chopper to operate up to 25 feet apart.
AC probes mount directly atop the Rk-570C behind the chopper blade housing. The probe is secured by
turning the thumbscrew on the bottom of the chopper housing. This screw extends through the chopper body
into a tapped hole on the underside of the probe.
For remote chopper operation, disconnect the short cable from the probe and chopper, then loosen the
thumbscrew on the underside of the chopper and remove the probe. Reconnect the probe and chopper and
remove the probe. Reconnect the probe and chopper using the long, coiled cable. The probe stand supplied
can be screwed into the tapped hole where the chopper was attached, if desired. Stands are provided with both
the probe and choppper for separate benchtop operation. The probe and chopper each have 1/4-20 mounting
holes for these stands or other optical fixturing.
Do not connect or disconnect the probe and chopper while the probe is plugged into the readout and power
is turned on.
23
3.0 OPERATION
External chopping is normally used where large or unstable background levels require chopping at the source
being measured to provide maximum rejection of extraneous radiation. Although the detachable Rk-570C
chopper obviates the need for an additional stand-alone chopper in most cases, Rk-5700 readouts support
external chopper operation when required.
In external chopping, the SYNC IN signal controls both channels of the Rk-5720 readout. It is not possible
to operate one channel with internal chopping and the other with external chopping simultaneously.
However, one thermopile probe could be used with one AC probe operating with either internal or external
chopping.
To set up for external chopping, any AC probes being used must be electrically disconnected from their Rk-
570C choppers. This is the only way to disable the 570C's operation. (If a probe is to remain physically
attached to its chopper, then insert the eraser end of a pencil, or some similar device, into the Rk-570C
aperture and rotate the chopper blade so the probe aperture is not obstructed). Connect the external chopper's
sync output to the SYNC IN connector on the readout. Turn on the readout and press the EXT CHOP key.
The LED above the key will light to indicate external operation.
For stand-alone choppers with moveable apertures, such as the CTX-530, it may be necessary to adjust the
aperture position slightly to obtain a sync signal exactly 180° out-of-phase. The displayed reading will be
at maximum when the phase is correct.
24
3.0 OPERATION
The RkP-575 Pyroelectric and RkP-576 Silicon probes can also be used to measure irradiance, the power per
unit surface area expressed in watts/cm2. Since both probes have accurate 1.000 ± .005 cm2 apertures, the
power level displayed on the readout will be equal to the irradiance, provided the probe aperture is filled by
the radiation being measured.
When measuring irradiance it is necessary to know the precise position of the area-defining aperture. For
both the 575 and 576 probes, the aperture is 0.495 ± .010" (1.26 ± .03 cm2) behind the front surface of the
probe housing, or 1.350 ± .020" (3.43 ± .05 cm) behind the front surface of the 570C nose cone when probe
and chopper are attached.
All AC probes are provided with a filter holder which positions 0.75" (1.9 cm) diameter filters or attenuators
ahead of the internal detector aperture. The holder installs through the slot on top of the probe housing. The
filter holder should be kept installed even when no filter is used to prevent stray light from entering through
the probe slot.
The RkP-575 probe will respond to temperature variations produced by air turbulence. It is recommended
that a transparent window, such as the RkW-371 or RkW-372 be used when making low-level measurements
in windy environments. Note that windows will degrade the spectral flatness of the probe and attenuate the
incident radiation. Set the readout's CAL factor to the window's transmission value for the wavelength of
interest to compensate the display.
Attenuators can be used to extend the measurement range of either AC probe without exceeding its maximum
power handling capability. Attenuators up to 10x can be compensated for by entering the attenuator's
transmissivity as the CAL factor.
Do not exceed the maximum irradiance ratings for these probes. Excessive power densities will produce
permanent detector damage.
25
3.0 OPERATION
The Rkt-series thermopile probes enable 5700 systems to measure power levels as great as 3 kilowatts.
Thermopile probes generate an integrated DC voltage proportional to incident radiation. They will measure
the average power of CW or continuously pulsed radiation. Thermopile probes do not require optical
chopping to operate.
Each RkT probe consists of a thermopile head and a preamp interface. Each preamp is calibrated for the head
it accompanies and should not be paired with a different head or erroneous readings will result. Each head
and its preamp are identified with the same serial number to prevent mismatching.
The preamp installs at the probe connector on the readout's back panel and connects to the head with the BNC
cable provided. The readout's EXT CHOP setting is irrelevant for thermopile operation.
Thermopile probes output a direct voltage to the readout. Often the display may show a power level offset
even with the head sensor blocked from all radiation. To zero any offset in the power reading and cancel any
background radiation, disable or block the optical source to be measured and allow the preamp and head to
stabilize for several minutes on the most sensitive range. Then press the BKGND key on the readout to
subtract the background level from all subsequent readings.
Thermopile probes have 3 decade measurement ranges and power levels are displayed as four-digit values.
The slower response time of thermopile probes requires that up to several seconds may elapse between
readings when the range is changed, either manually or in autoranging.
For high-power, water-cooled thermopile heads, the water supply should be connected and allowed to
operate for several minutes before activating background cancellation or making power measurements. A
minimum flow rate of 4 gallons/minute for RkT-300 heads and 6 gallons/minute for RkT-1000 heads is
required to achieve the rated power dissipation. Operation of water-cooled heads with insufficient water flow
can damage the sensor.
Forced-air-cooled thermopiles must have their fans plugged into an AC outlet and operating before exposing
to radiation.

4.0 CALIBRATION
Laser Probe, Inc. products are factory calibrated traceable to NBS standards. Calibration is certified for six
months following receipt of your instrument. Recalibration or other internal readjustments by the customer
will invalidate the remainder of any certification period still in effect. A certified recalibration service is
available through Laser Probe, Inc. The following calibration procedures are provided to assist customers
who regularly maintain and verify the performance of their own equipment.
Recommended Equipment:
Oscilloscope; Tektronix 465 or equivalent Frequency Counter with at least 0.01 Hz resolution; H.P. 5302A
or equivalent
51/2- digit DVM with true RMS circuitry operable at 30Hz; Fluke 8800A or equivalent
Function generator with a sync output having a low-to-high transition at the positive peak of the
sinewave output; Wavetek 131A or equivalent
Remove the four screws that retain the top cover of the readout and carefully lift the cover straight up to access
the instrument's interior. Refer to figure 4.1 and the silkscreen on the printed circuit board to identify interior
components specified in the following procedure. For dual-channel Rk-5720 readouts, each channel is
calibrated using the same procedure. The main component designations apply to the Rk-5710 and Channel
A of the 5720. Channel B designations are in parentheses.
Turn on the readout and adjust trimpot R575, CONTRAST, for the best display rendition, if necessary.
27
4.0 CALIBRATION
With the readout turned off, connect pin 11 of J501 (pin 11 of J502) to pin 2 so the readout 'thinks' a probe
is attached. Connect the DVM and frequency counter to the function generator output to precisely monitor
the voltage level and frequency. Connect the sync output from the function generator to the SYNC IN
connector on the readout's back panel. Set the function generator for a 30 Hz ± 0.1% sinewave output with
an amplitude of 1 volt rms. Feed this signal into pin 9 of J501 (J502). Maintain this configuration throughout
readout calibration.
Switch on the readout and activate the EXT CHOP function. Monitor pin 13 of U502 (U508) with the
oscilloscope. Adjust trimpot R504, DIFF. ADJ. A, (R521, DIFF. ADJ. B) to minimize or eliminate the sync
feedthrough signal, which appears as a low-amplitude square wave on the oscilloscope. Next adjust R505,
C.M. ADJ A, (R522, C.M. ADJ B) for a 0 VDC output, as viewed on the 'scope.
Still monitoring pin 13, adjust trimpot R565, PHASE ADJ. A, (R570, PHASE ADJ. B) for a positive full-
wave rectified waveform display. Disconnect the function generator from pin 9 of J501 (J502), move the
scope probe to the wire link next to R539 (R560) and readjust trimpot R505 (R522) for 0 VDC at this point.
Connect the function generator to pin 9 of J501 (J502) and set for 1.98 volts rms output. Adjust first R539,
COARSE A, (R553, COARSE B) then R540, FINE A, (R554, FINE B) until the readout display matches
the DVM voltage reading. Reduce the function generator out 0.100 volts rms. Disconnect the function
generator and ground pin 9 of J501 (J502) by jumpering to pin 2. Adjust trimpot R550, ZERO A, (R552,
ZERO B) until the readout display matches the DVM voltage reading.
Repeat the FINE and ZERO adjustment procedures in the preceding paragraph.
Set the function generator output to arbitrary values between 0 and 2 volts rms. The readout display should
be within .001 volts of the DVM reading at each point.
Rk-5720 with Ratio Output Option: Turn off the readout and disconnect the function generator. Carefully
remove EPROM U528 and turn the readout back on. Connect a DC voltmeter to the RATIO OUT connector
on the back panel and adjust trimpot R580, F.S. ADJ., until the voltmeter reads 10.00 VDC. Turn off the
readout and reinstall U528.

Remove the filter holder from the probe by grasping and pulling straight up. Remove the four screws
that retain the probe's top cover and carefully lift the cover straight off. With the readout turned off, attach
the probe to the readout connector (use Channel A if Rk-5720). Refer to figures 4.2, 4.3 and the silkscreen
on the probe pc board to locate components specified in the calibration procedure. The principal part
designations refer to the RkP-575 probe. Part numbers for the RkP-576 are given in parentheses.
Before performing the optical calibration, check the tuning of the 30 Hz bandpass filter. Unsolder jumper
J101 (J301) to isolate the bandpass filter. Connect the function generator and one channel of the
oscilloscope to the filter input, the solder terminal nearest gain adjust trimmer, R110 (R312). Connect
the other oscilloscope channel to the filter output, pin 6 of U102 (U302). Ground the instruments on pin
2 of J501.
Turn on the readout and adjust the function generator for a 30 Hz ± 0.1% sinewave of 0.25V p-p
amplitude. Adjust the oscilloscope so that both traces are of equal height on the screen and at least one
full cycle is displayed. Make sure the 'scope ground reference is exactly at mid-screen for both channels.
Adjust filter trimpot R108 (R310) so that the zero-crossings of both traces occur at exactly the same
points on the horizontal axis. The filter is now tuned to 30 Hz. Turn off the readout and disconnect the
oscilloscope and function generator. Reattach jumper J101(J301).
29
4.0 CALIBRATION
Turn on the light source and the chopper. Monitor the chopper's sync output with the frequency counter and
adjust the chopping frequency to 30Hz ± 0.1%. Connect the chopper sync to the sync inputs of the ECPR
system and the 5700 readout.
First, the range ration adjustment must be set. Position the probe for a reading of 15 to 19 mW/cm2 (15 to
19 µW/cm2 for the 576) on the 200mW (200 µW) range. Note the exact reading. Select the 20 mW/cm2 (20
µW/cm2) range and adjust ratio trimpot R104 (R306) on the probe's preamp board to yield the reading
obtained on the previous range.
Set up the ECPR according to the Rs-5900 User Instruction Manual and determine a plane with an irradiance
value from 1.5 to 1.9 mW/cm2 (15 to 19 µW/cm2 for the 576). Shift the position of the probe slightly and
verify that the irradiance does not vary more than ± 1% over a distance equal to the probe aperture diameter.
Note the exact ECPR reading.
Replace the ECPR detector with the probe under test, taking care to maintain the axial position and the
source-to-detector distance to within 2 mm. Select the 2 mW/cm2 (20 µW/cm2) range for maximum
resolution. Adjust gain trimpot R110 (R312) to yield the irradiance value obtained with the ECPR.
Calibration is complete. Replace the probe cover and install the cover's retaining screws. Reinsert the filter
holder in the probe housing.

Preamp Calibration
Remove the six retaining screws and take off the top cover plate of the preamp module. Connect the preamp
to the readout's probe input connector (use Channel A if 5720 readout) and latch to secure in place. Refer
to figure 4-4 for the location of preamp components identified below.
Connect the precision DC source to the preamp BNC connector. Set the source output to the value given in
Table 4.1 for the preamp model being calibrated. Turn on the readout and adjust gain trimpot R703 so the
value given in the table appears on the readout.
Detach the DC source and connect the thermopile sensor to the preamp. Block the sensor aperture completely
and allow to stabilize for several minutes. Set the readout for autoranging to select the most sensitive probe
range. Adjust offset trimpot R706 to zero the readout display. Use the SET A or INC controls to verify that
the display reads zero on each range. Readjust and reverify if needed.
The response time setting is not particularly critical and will probably not need adjustment. If adjustment
is required, it is best to monitor the preamp output (pin 1 of J701) with a storage oscilloscope or chart recorder.
A standard oscilloscope may be used, but the long response times of the thermopile sensors make this
difficult. While alternately blocking and uncovering the sensor aperture at several second intervals, adjust
trimpot R710 for minimum undershoot and overshoot on the output waveform.
The preamp calibration is complete. Replace the top cover and screws.

Optical Calibration
Attach the sensor to a calibrated 5700 readout and preamp module. Set the readout to the most sensitive range
which can accommodate the power level of the known optical source. Block the source and let the instrument
stabilize for several minutes. Zero the readout with the BKGND control if necessary. Apply the source to
the sensor and again allow the readout to stabilize. Adjust the trimpot on the back of the sensor head so the
readout display matches the known power of the source. The sensor trimpot has an adjustment range of about
± 10% if this is not sufficient to calibrate the problem, check the preamp calibration.
Thermopile probes with the -CAL option are equipped with a calibration heater mounted on the rear of the
sensor disc. By applying DC power to the heater, the sensor is heated by electricity instead of optical
radiation. Calibration of the probe to a precisely known electrical power level can provide an equivalent
optical measurement accuracy of ±1%.
When applying power to the heater element, do not exceed the maximum electrical power ratings given in
Table 4.2. Do not irradiate the sensor disc while power is applied to the heater. Do not apply power to the
heater any longer than necessary to perform the calibration.
To calibrate, connect the probe head to a calibrated readout an preamp module. Turn on the readout and set
to the most sensitive range which can accommodate the power level to be applied. Completely block the
sensor aperture and allow the system to stabilize. Use the BKGND control to zero the readout if necessary.
Apply DC power to the pin jacks on the back of the probe head. Supply the positive voltage to the red pin
jack and use the black pin jack as ground. Allow the system to stabilize, then accurately measure the DC
current and voltage applied and compute the DC power. Find the front-to-back sensitivity factor of the probe
head in Table 4.3 and multiply the measured DC power by this factor. Adjust the trimpot on the back of
the sensor head so the readout displays this value. Turn off or disconnect the DC power source. This
completes the probe calibration.

APPENDIX A
This option allows Rk-5700 series readouts to operate in a controller based GPIB instrumentation system.
All front-panel control functions are available as device specific commands and all measurement data may
be transmitted via the GPIB interface.
C0 No Controller capability
41
APPENDIX A
The Rk-5700 GPIB Interface uses the same primary address for Talker and Listener functions. No secondary
address capability is provided. The primary address can be set to any value between 0 and 30 (0 to 29 only
for Rk-5710). All addresses must be entered as two-digit numbers; for example, address '2' is entered as '02'.
The GPIB address setting is stored internally on 5700-series readouts and is not affected by turning the
instrument off.
To set the GPIB address for 5700 readouts, press the GPIB ADDR key on the front panel. The current address
will be displayed, along with the message that only addresses from 0 to 30 are valid, on the top line of the
LCD display. In addition, the bottom line of the display will display the backlighting control message, telling
the user to press "55" to toggle the state of the backlighting. It is important to note that the method by which
display backlighting is enabled or disabled is by entering an invalid GPIB address code of "55". When this
code is entered, it is interpreted only as a backlighting command and does not affect the presently stored GPIB
address. After the GPIB ADDR key is pressed, a blinking cursor will appear at the first digit position. During
GPIB address entry, the front-panel keys serve as a numeric keypad. The corresponding digit for each key
is shown in the lower right corner of its legend.
Enter the first digit of the address by pressing the appropriate digit key. The selected digit will appear in the
address display and the cursor will advance to the second digit position. (If a digit key is pressed which would
produce an invalid address, an "Error" message flashes and the keypress is ignored).
Enter the second digit of the address; the number will appear on the display and the cursor will return to the
first digit position. If the displayed address is the one desired press GPIB ADDR to store that value and return
to normal readout operation. If the display backlighting command was entered, the state of the backlighting
will toggle at this point. If an error was made in entering the address, both digits must be re-entered. The
address value can be stored only while the cursor is at the first digit position.
The view the GPIB address setting without altering its value, press GPIB ADDR to display the current
address, then press GPIB ADDR again to exit the address entry mode.

APPENDIX A
The 5700-series readout must be placed in remote mode by the GPIB controller to respond to device
commands over the GPIB. Readouts with the GPIB option installed display a remote/local status annuciator
at all times. When the readout is in remote mode the annunciator changes from inverse 'L' to inverse 'r'. The
front panel controls are inoperative while the readout is in remote mode.
All 5700 readouts power up in local mode, set to the least sensitive probe ranges(s), with Background Cancel,
Slow Averaging and External Chopping turned off. For the Rk-5720 readout each channel with a probe
connected is Talk-enabled and the ratio data is Talk-enabled if both probes are present; channel A is selected
for channel specific commands.
The Rk-5720 dual-channel readout has three functions (Range Set, Calibration Factor and Background
Cancel) which are duplicated for each channel. Commands for these functions are routed to the desired
channel by prefixing a channel-specifier (ASCII 'A' or 'B'). For example, AK1 turns on channel A
Background Cancel while BK1 turns on channel B.
Once channel-specifier is received, all channel-specific commands apply to that channel until the other
channel is specified. If commands are grouped by channel it is not necessary to prefix every command. For
instance, AR4_K0_C1_BR3_K1 is equivalent to AR4_AK0_AC1_BR3_BK1.
If only one probe is connected to the Rk-5720, all channel-specific commands are routed to the active channel
and channel specifiers are not required.
Any combination of the three available data messages (A, B and Ratio) can be selected for transmission when
the Rk-5720 receives a Talk request. The 'T' command followed by one or more ASCII digits enables
transmission of data as shown in the Program Codes table. The 'Q' command disables transmission of data
previously enabled.
44
APPENDIX A
Special Functions
The Rk-5700 series supports several ancillary features to assist the user in setting up and operating in a GPIB
environment. These features are as follows:
1) No Update Feature:
The Rk-5700 series readout updates the power level reading every 1/3 second. If the GPIB application
software is requesting a power reading at a rate faster than this "gate" time, the RK-5700 will wait for the
new reading to be obtained before responding to the TALK request issued by the controller. This may result
in a delay of up to 1/3 second in a TALK response. If this delay is unacceptable to the user, the "No Update"
feature may be enabled. This feature, when enabled, will cause the Rk-5700 to respond with the ASCII string
"No Update" if a reading is not ready at the instant the TALK state is achieved (Refer to MESSAGE
FORMATS). In this way, a controller won't be forced to wait until a reading is available from the readout.
This feature is enabled by the "T4" command and remains enabled until the "Q4" command is issued.
The controller may request that the Rk-5700 send a Probe identifier. To request the probe I.D. for Channel
A, the "I0" command is used, for Channel B, "I1" is used. When next command to TALK, the Rk-5700 will
send the Probe identifier (refer to MESSAGE FORMATS). Subsequent TALK requests will result in power
reading responses.
The user may wish to verify the type of Unit at any address and, therefore, the Rk-5700 provides a means
by which the Unit I.D. can be TALKED when requested by the controller. To request the Unit I.D., the
controller issues the "I2" command. When next commanded to TALK, the Rk-5700 will respond with a Unit
I.D. message (refer to MESSAGE FORMATS). Subsequent TALK requests will results in power reading
responses.
45
APPENDIX A
Measurement result messages from the 5700-series readouts are transmitted in the following general
format:
The header is a two-byte message identifying the data which follows. The headers used are:
The linear (watts) data message for CHANNEL data consists of 12 bytes in engineering notation:
The logarithmic (dBm) data message for CHANNEL data contains 11 bytes with the following format:
BYTE 1 Sign
2-6 Value (4 digits + dec. point)
7 Separator (sp)
8-10 ASCII 'dBm'
11 Separator or terminator
46
APPENDIX A
The logarithmic data message for RATIO data consists of the following 11 bytes:
BYTE 1 Sign
2-6 Value (4 digits + dec. point)
7 Separator (sp)
8-10 ASCII 'dB' + space
11 Terminator (newline) with EOI true
If more than one data message is enabled with the 'T' command on the Rk-5720, the messages will be
concatenated in the order:
Channel A Data
Channel B Data
Ratio Data
Data messages are separated by an ASCII space and the last message transmitted is followed by the message
terminator.
A channel data message cannot be enabled for transmission with the 'T' command if no probe is connected
to that channel. The ratio data is only available if both channels have probes attached.
