In our area, we call New Year as St. John. St. John's celebration begins on the 13th month of
Ethiopia called "pagume", and starting from the first day of the month, we get up at 9 o'clock in
order to bapitize and gather together with hota and dance. We are baptized so that the sins
we committed in the old year can be erased and we welcome the new year with a new spirit.
Most of the people who participate in this festival are youngs, when we are going to be
baptized, we will classify into two groups female group and male group. the females sing by
saying "Ababa Ayehosh" while the males sing "Eyoha Ababaye ". If the dance slows down, the
women and men will join and sing in unison. During this season, there is a competition among
the youth to get new poems and dance to new tunes.
Even after the baptism, we don't go into our house, we gather in one place, burn wood and
dance around the fire so that we don't feel cold. Then we dance and go around our city and
insult those who came late to be baptized with poetry. On the day before September 1st, we
get up in the morning and head to the mountains and green areas to cut flowers. Then we give
the flowers that we have brought to our neighbors and acquaintances by saying, " Enkutatash"
and they say "Bring you every year," and they give us the money they can afford.
After four o'clock in the morning, we all get together in new clothes and go to church. All the
children from different tribes and countries will gather from the church. Then various
traditional games, sport performances like long jump, high jump, and dances are held. He hugs
the children who won the competition and dances. It is a common thing to get mad in the
neighborhood and insult each other with poetry. There is no violence in this system, but he
gives his response in poetry. In addition to these activities there are many business activities
during this festival. Among them, jewelry, New Year's gifts, vegetables and fruits, distilled jolly
juice are widely traded.
At eleven o'clock we all leave the church and the nearest groups accompany the distant ones.
Then when we enter our house, we celebrate with family in a bright manner. This celebration
does not end in one day and continues until September 3.
In general, this festival has various benefits for the community, for example, it is a source of
income for the traders, a lot of knowledge and experiance can be exchange of the festival for
the youth, and it also maintains the bond in the community. Celebrating the festival from the
place creates great happiness and emotional satisfaction.
