THE BIBLICAL CONCEPT ABOUT HOLINESS

1 Peter 1:14-16
14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former
lusts in your ignorance:
15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of
conversation;
16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.
naman kayo sa lahat ng paraan ng pamumuhay;
16 Sapagka't nasusulat, Kayo'y mangagpakabanal; sapagka't ako'y banal.

Introduction:

Holiness in the Bible is an ACTION concept! Holiness is not just what we

DON'T DO; it is very much what we POSITIVELY DO!
Holiness in the Bible is almost always connected with actual lifestyles, not
just with some state of mind. It is very powerful, and very practical, and
very positive!
NOTE: The basic concept of holiness in the Bible is that of "separation," a
separation from sin, and a separation to God!
The Bible defined holiness according to the meaning of hagios, the Greek
word for “holy” which simply means separated separated from sin and
consecrated to God.
If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto
honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, [and] prepared unto
every good work. 2 Tim.2:1
But ye [are] a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a
peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath
called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: 1 Pet.2:9
And ye shall be holy unto me: for I the LORD [am] holy, and have severed
you from [other] people, that ye should be mine. Lev.20:26

Truths we need to consider and learn about The Biblical Concept of

Holiness:
1. BELIEVERS ARE CALLED TO LIVE A LIFE OF HOLINESS
For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God: the LORD thy God hath
chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people
that are upon the face of the earth. Deut.7:6
18 And the LORD hath avouched thee this day to be his peculiar people, as
he hath promised thee, and that thou shouldest keep all his
commandments;
19 And to make thee high above all nations which he hath made, in praise,
and in name, and in honour; and that thou mayest be an holy people unto
the LORD thy God, as he hath spoken. Deut.26:18-19
And ye shall be holy unto me: for I the LORD am holy, and have severed you
from other people, that ye should be mine. Lev.20:26
For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.
1 Thess.4:7
But ye [are] a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a
peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath
called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: 1 Pet.2:9

What is Holy living?

It is God-given ability to live a holy life by being obedient to God in all areas
of life.
14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former
lusts in your ignorance:
15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of
conversation; 1 Peter 1:14–15

“We ought to be living as if Jesus died yesterday, rose this morning, and is
coming back this afternoon.” – Pastor Adrian Rogers
2. BELIEVERS ARE TO CULTIVATE HOLINESS AS A RESULT
OF BEING IN CHRIST
Holiness is a divine attribute that can only be imparted to us and through us
by our standing and position in Christ.

How does the believer cultivate holiness?

Know and Love the Scripture

Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. John 17:17
Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
Ps.119:11
 Regard Ourselves as dead to the dominion of sin and as alive
to God in Christ
Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive
unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Rom.6:11
Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is
he that is in you, than he that is in the world. 1 Jn.4:4

 Pray and work in dependence upon God for holiness

Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one. Job 14:4
Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
Ps.51:10
“God works in us and with us, not against us or without us; so that his
assistance is an encouragement as to the facilitating of the work, and no
occasion of neglect as to the work itself.” – Bishop John Owen
But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto
godliness. 1 Tim.4:7
For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall
fall into mischief. Prov.24:16

 Flee worldliness
 Seek fellowship in the Church
3. BELIEVERS ARE TO CONFORM INTO CHRISTLIKENESS
THAT LEADS TO HOLINESS
“Holiness is the habit of being of one mind with God, according as we find
His mind described in Scripture.” – Bishop J.C. Ryle
Agreeing in God's judgment.
Hating what He hates.
Loving what He loves.
Measuring everything in this world by the standard of His Word.
Many Christians have what we might call a cultural holiness. They adapt to
the character and behavior pattern of Christians around them.
- Pastor Jerry Bridges

Holiness is Christ-likeness. We will manifests and display the character of

Christ.

To bear with and forgive others, even as Christ forgave us – Col.3:1;

Eph.4:22
To be unselfish, even as Christ pleased not Himself -
To walk in love, even as Christ loved us – Eph.5:25-26
To be lowly-minded and humble - Phil.2:5
“Give up the struggle and the fight; relax in the omnipotence of the Lord
Jesus; look up into His lovely face and as you behold Him, He will transform
you into His likeness. You do the beholding--He does the transforming.
There is no short-cut to holiness.” - Pastor Alan Redpath
