Inquiry Question

What resources do teachers and

student have now that support
student learning?
What resources could be add to
better support teachers lesson
planning and students
understanding?
Connection to Leadership Standards
● ISTE Standard 2.4 Collaborator - Educators dedicate time to
collaborate with both colleagues and students to improve practice,
discover and share resources and ideas, and solve problems.
○ Working with other teachers in the Algebra department allows educators to work
with around 5-8 other teachers that could use additional resources when lesson
planning and educating students.
● ISTE Standard 2.5 Designers - Educators design authentic,
learner-driven activities and environments that recognize and
accommodate learner variability.
○ Using new resources will allow educators to have more varied lesson planning and
varied problems for students to learn on.
What is used the in the
classroom now? - ALEKS
Aleks online platform is used in the classroom for Math practice problems,
homework, quizzes, and for teacher lesson planning and explanations.
Benefits
- Varied question types of key concepts
- Explanations and examples provided for each question if teacher chooses
- Concepts are self paced for student practice
- Videos are provided for some concepts
- Work is online and can be completed anywhere with wifi
- Assignments and problems can be practiced again with new questions at
any time.
- Homeworks and quizzes are computer graded by platform and answers/
progress are provided to student immediately
What we use now - ALEKS
While there are benefits to using an only platform with varied questions
for practice, there are also challenges that teachers and students face with
the online platform.
Challenges
- Answers don’t need work shown by students and need to be exact
answers
- Assignment closes at specific time with no late work allowed
- Doesn’t always give partial credit for work shown on problems
- Needs to have wifi to complete assignments
- Teachers need to add examples and explanations for students to use
What does lesson planning look
like in the classroom?
- Warm ups - Spiral Review questions
- Math Vocabulary
- Key Concepts with formulas and
descriptions
- Practice problems where students
can see work shown and practice
additional problems on their own or
with partners.
NEW TEXTBOOK?
Big Ideas Algebra 1
Online Platform and Textbook

- There is an online textbook and

homework support along with a textbook and student workbook.

- There is also a assessment book for teachers with quizzes and tests.
Teachers can use this or use questions to create their own.
- Online platform allows students to check for correct answers.
- Students can use workbook in class for practice problems to show
work.
Combination of Resources
Aleks and Big Ideas
With a textbook that includes
paced lesson planning,
examples, and guided
learning, this would be a great
addition to the online platform
of Aleks where students can
use both online tools to
practice different types of
math problems on different
key concepts.
More Resources + More Practice = Better Understanding
