Introduction (5 minutes)
Ask your students to name the different coins used in the United States.
Show the students the different coins, and tell them what each coin is called.

Pre-teach coin names and values to students prior to the lesson and have students orally share the
names and values with you after the lesson to check for understanding.
Provide students with a chart that lists the names on the coins with corresponding visuals and the coin's
worth.
Intermediate
Have students do a think-pair-share, explaining the different coin names to their partners.
Ask students to repeat the names of the coins aloud after you say them.
Play The Coin Song and pause the song after each coin is explained. Have students repeat after you as

Provide students with a bag of coins to refer to as they watch the video.
Have students refer to the chart that lists the names of coins. Provide a sentence frame for students to
share coin names and values:
That is a ____ and it is worth ____.

Ask students to come up to the whiteboard to assist you as you draw the coins and write the values of the
coins.
Encourage students to come up to the whiteboard and help you figure out what coins to use to purchase
the items.
Offer sentence stems to support them as they share their ideas with the rest of the class.

Have students share how they know what the coin name and value is, referring to characteristics
(adjectives) that describe the coin (e.g. the coin is copper, small, big, silver, etc.)

Enrichment: Have the students tell you how much each item is worth without using the coins.
Support: Allow students who need extra support to work in partnerships or small groups.

Choose different coins from the bag of coins and ask students to name the coin and its value using the
