Counting Coins

Second Grade Math

Help your students learn to count money with this teacher-approved lesson. They'll love learning how much
their favorite things are worth.

Introduction (5 minutes)

Ask your students to name the different coins used in the United States.
Show the students the different coins, and tell them what each coin is called.

Beginning

Pre-teach coin names and values to students prior to the lesson and have students orally share the
names and values with you after the lesson to check for understanding.
Provide students with a chart that lists the names on the coins with corresponding visuals and the coin's
worth.

Intermediate

Have students do a think-pair-share, explaining the different coin names to their partners.
Ask students to repeat the names of the coins aloud after you say them.

Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling (10 minutes)

Play The Coin Song and pause the song after each coin is explained. Have students repeat after you as

you chant:
A ____ (coin name) is worth ____ (coin value).
Show students pre-selected images from magazines or the internet and write how much each item costs.
For example, a popsicle might cost one dollar.
Model figuring out what coins you can use to purchase the items.

Beginning

Provide students with a bag of coins to refer to as they watch the video.
Have students refer to the chart that lists the names of coins. Provide a sentence frame for students to
share coin names and values:
That is a ____ and it is worth ____.

Intermediate

Ask students to come up to the whiteboard to assist you as you draw the coins and write the values of the
coins.
Encourage students to come up to the whiteboard and help you figure out what coins to use to purchase
the items.
Offer sentence stems to support them as they share their ideas with the rest of the class.

Guided Practice (15 minutes)

Give each student a bag of coins.


Write a money amount on the board.
Have the students use their coins to show the amount you have on the board.

Encourage students to refer to their chart.


Encourage students to refer to the sentence frame used during explicit instruction to show the amounts.

Intermediate

Have students share how they know what the coin name and value is, referring to characteristics
(adjectives) that describe the coin (e.g. the coin is copper, small, big, silver, etc.)

Independent working time (15 minutes)

Hand out the Counting Coins worksheet.


Have the students complete the worksheet independently.
Have them talk to their shoulder partner to check their worksheet
Allow students to use their coins to complete the worksheets.

Have students work in a small, teacher-led group.


Encourage students to use their bag of coins and chart to complete the worksheet.

Intermediate

Allow students to work in partnerships.


Provide students with sentence stems/frames to support discussion.

Assessment (15 minutes)

Assign one of the Present Math worksheets as an informal assessment.

Choose different coins from the bag of coins and ask students to name the coin and its value using the
same sentence frame used in previous sections:

Intermediate

Ask students to explain how they figured out what coins to use to pay for items using sequencing words
(first, next, then, finally).

Review and closing (10 minutes)

Replay The Coin Song.


Have students turn and talk to a partner, answering the following questions:
What did you learn today?
What adjectives describe a penny? A nickel? A dime? A quarter?

Allow students to respond to one question in L1 or English.

Intermediate

Encourage students to draw pictures in their math journals of each coin and its value.
Have students write adjectives around each coin that describes it, using bilingual glossaries and
dictionaries for support.
