Conditional sentences

Type 1 Conditional: future conditional

This conditional is used when the result has a high possibility to occur in the future if
the condition is met.

In this type of conditional, we use the present tense in the conditional clause and the
future tense in the resultant clause.

IF condition result

present simple WILL + base verb

If it rains I will stay at home.

e.g. If it rains, I will stay at home.

For example, it is morning. You are at home. You plan to play tennis this afternoon.
But there are some clouds in the sky. Imagine that it rains. What will you do? Notice
that we are thinking about a future condition. It is not raining yet. But the sky is
cloudy and you think that it could rain. So there is a high chance for you to stay at
home if it rains.

Difference between type 0 and type 1 conditionals

Hong Kong students like to use ‘will + verb’ for all kinds of conditionals. However,
remember that in English, we use different tenses for different kinds of conditionals.

Look at the following pair of sentences. What is the difference?

(1) If I miss the bus, I am late for school.
(2) If I miss the bus, I will be late for school.

Sentence (1) implies this is a habit or fact of yours whereas (2) implies a prediction on
one single event.

Look at the following pairs of sentences. For each pair, decide which one is more
appropriate than the other.

1. If you heat ice, it will melt.

2. If you study harder, you pass.
