1. Mr. B can wash his car in 15 minutes, while his son takes twice as long to do the same job.

If they
work together, how many minutes will the job take them?

ANSWER:
Mr B does the job in 1/15 job per minute
His Son can do the job in 1/30 job per minute.
Together rate = 1/x job/min
1/15 + 1/30 = 1/x
Common Denominator = 30x
2x + x = 30
3x = 30
x = 10
So, together they can do the job in 10 minutes.

2. In two years time jam will be as old as dindo is now. in 26 years dindo will be twica as old as jam is
now . how old is dindo?

let x = jam's age now.

let y = dindo's age now.
in 2 years jam will be as old as dindo is now.
this means that x + 2 = y
in 26 years dindo will be twice as old as jam is now.
this means that y + 26 = 2 * x
you have 2 equations that need to be solved simultaneously.
the first equation is:
y=x+2
the second equation is:
y + 26 = 2 * x
the trick in solving 2 equations in 2 unknowns is to reduce the number of unknowns and equations to
1 which can then be solved. after you solve for the 1 unknown, then you can solve for the other.
in this problem, we'll use substitution as the method to reduce the 2 equations in 2 unknowns to 1
equation in 1 unknown.
the first equation says that y = x + 2.
we'll substitute for y in the second equation to get:
y + 26 = 2 * x becomes:
(x + 2) + 26 = 2 * x
that last equation is now 1 equation in 1 unknown.
simplify it to get:
x + 28 = 2 * x

subtract x from both sides of the equation to get:

28 = x
this is the same as:
x = 28
you now know what x is and you can solve for y.
use the first equation to get:
y = x + 2 which becomes:
y = 30
you now should have both x and y and you can confirm them as being good or not good by
substituting in the original equations.
the first equation is y = x + 2
since y = 30 and x = 2, this equation is true and the values of x and y are confirmed as good.
the second equation is y + 26 = 2 * x
y + 26 = 30 + 26 = 56 and 2 * x = 2 * 28 = 56, so the equation is true and the value of x and y are
confirmed as being good for the second equation.
since the value of x and y are confirmed as good in both equations, then the value of x and y have
simultaneously solved both equations.
the answer is:
x = 28
y = 30
this means that jam is 28 and dindo is 30.
in 2 years jam will be 30 which is how old dindo is now.
in 26 years dindo will be 30 + 26 = 56 years old which is 2 * how old jam is now (jam is now 28 years
old).

5. An auditorium is 1/2 full. After 25 people in the audience left, the auditorium is 3/8 full. What is the
seating capacity of the hall?
25 people represents 1/8 of the capacity, C.
(1/8)C = 25 > Seating capacity is people.
Check: (1/2)(200) = 100 people initially in auditorium
25 people leave > 75 people remain
75/200 = 3/8

6. Hubert can run 10kph, whereas Banjo can run 8kph. If they start at the same time from the same
point and run in opposite directions, how far will they be after 10 minutes?
Always remember this relationship: Speed = Distance/ Time.

For Hubert: Speed = 10kph, time = 10 mins, Distance = unknown.

For Banjo: Speed = 8kph, time = 10 mins, Distance = unknown.
Lets D1 = distance traveled by Hubert in 10mins
D2 =distance traveled by Banjo in 10mins
Then solve for individual distances traveled using the relationship above:

For Hubert: D1 = Speed x Time

D1 = (10km/hr)(10min)(1hr/60min)
D1 = 100/60 km
D1 = 1.67 km

For Banjo: D2 = Speed x Time

D2 = (8km/hr)(10min)(1hr/60min)
D2 = 80/60 km
D2 = 1.33 km

Since they traveled in opposite direction after 10 mins, just add their individual distances//then Dtotal
= 1.67 + 1.33 = 3 km..
7. Mrs.Santos can finish 4 placemats for every 3 that her daughter finishes.If Mrs. Santos finishes 16

weeks?
Mrs.Santos can finish 4 placemats for every 3 that her daughter finishes.If Mrs. Santos finishes 16
placemats in one week,how many placemats in all can mother and daughter finish together in 4
weeks
Find out how many placemats Mom can make in 1 day:

placemats per day

Find out how many placemats daughter to make in 1 day

* = placemats per day

Together they can make:

+ = 28/7 = 4 placemats per day

4 weeks = 28 days, therefore:
28 * 4 = 112 placemats in 4 weeks

8. At a certain printing plant, each of m machines prints 6 newspapers every s seconds. If all machines
work together but independently without interruption, how many minutes will it take to print an
entire run of 18,000 newspapers?
Algebra: If 1 machine prints 6 papers every s seconds, it prints 6(60/s), or 360/s papers per minute.
There are m machines, each printing at that rate, so each minute this plant cranks out
360m/s papers.
To find how many minutes it takes to print 18,000 papers, we divide 18,000 by 360m/s:

Check by plugging in easy numbers: Say there are 1,000 machines (so m = 1,000), and each prints 6
papers every 60 seconds (so s = 60).
If that were true, then each machine would print 6 papers per minute, and the plant would crank out
6,000 papers per minute.
At that rate, it would only take 3 minutes to produce 18,000 papers.
Do those numbers work? Does plugging in 1,000 for m and 60 for s give us 3 with the expression we
came up with?

9. Travelling at 15kph a doctor would arrive 1hr early. Travelling at 10kph he would arrive an hour
late. What average speed for him to arrive on time?
12kph.
He arrives one hour early at 15kph. This means that the distance is 15*(x-1), where x is in how long
he’s meant to arrive.
Similarly, the distance is 10*(x+1).
Solving 15*(x-1) = 10*(x+1) gives us x = 5.
He’s meant to arrive in 5 hours.
Which means that (using the distance equations) he’s at 60km from his destination.
Hence, he should go at 12kph (60/5) to arrive right on

How much water must be evaporated from 170 liters of a 75% solution of salt in
order to obtain an 85% brine solution.
:
Let x = amt of water to be evaporated
write an equation for the amt of salt in each solution
.75(170) = .85(170-x)
127.5 = 144.5 - .85x
.85x = 144.5 - 127.5

x=

You can check this, the amt of salt remains the same, (only the % changes)
.75(170) = .85(150)
