NO Steps
Before procedure
1 Assess the child's need for suction by respiratory rate, breath sound 1
and heart rate.
2 Wash hands 1
3 Gather all needed equipment, supplies and devices.( suction 1
catheter- saline solution or sterile water-gloves- syringe- sponge -
mask
4 Explain procedure to the child / parents 1
5 Ventilate the child with oxygen prior to suctioning to prevent 1
hypoxia
During The Procedure

Put on gloves and mask. 1

6 Measure correct size of catheter. • Length can be measured from 1
nares of nose to lobe of ear and then to thyroid cartilage.
7 Lubricate the catheter with distilled water or normal saline. 1
8 Gently insert the catheter without suction applied. 1

9 Turn on the suction to the desired negative pressure*. 1

10 Apply suction by occluding the on/off port. 1

11 Repeat suction as needed. 1

12 Withdraw the catheter gently with a rotating movement and 1

apply suction*

13 Wipe the catheter with sterile gauze and then clean the catheter with 1
irrigating solution
After The Procedure

14 Assess the child's respiratory status 1

15 Return the child to the prescribed oxygen therapy 1
16 Comfort the child after the procedure. 1
17 Auscultate anterior lungs bilaterally. 1
Faculty of Nursing

18 Document the child's response to suctioning and the type and 1

amount of suctioned secretions.
19 Report any changes in heart rate, respiratory rate and breathing 1
sounds.

6 Keep your dominant hand sterile and your non dominant 1
hand clean for the procedure. Use only the dominant hand to
manipulate the catheter.

7 3. With your dominant hand, remove the catheter from the paper 1
sheath, keeping it sterile. Place the distal end of the catheter in a cup
of sterile saline to test the suction pressure.

8 If the child is being ventilated, have an assistant disconnect the 1

ventilator and manually oxygenate the child before suctioning. Give
several breaths and then remove the resuscitation bag.*
9 Before inserting the catheter, determine how far the suction catheter 1
can be advanced by making a visual comparison of the catheter and
the ET tube length.

10 With your dominant hand, place the suction catheter into the ET 2
tube, making sure that no suction is being applied at this time.
Advance the catheter no farther than 0.5 cm below the edge of the
ET tube.*

11 When the catheter in place, intermittently cover the suction port and 1
rotate the catheter. To prevent the child from becoming hypoxic, do
not suction for longer than 5 to 10 seconds. *

12 Remove the catheter and irrigate it in a cup of sterile saline. Repeat 1

as necessary, oxygenating the child between suctioning.
