Spring 2024
Assignment: 4 and 5
Course Title: Elements of Statistics and Probability (STA 201)
Course Instructor: Tarikul Islam (TKL)
Last date of submission: 18.04.2024 Total Marks: 30
Special Note:
(i) Must be submitted by April 18.
(ii) The first/cover page should be printed and organized (Course title, section, assignment
number, submitted by (must include student ID, student name), submitted to should be
included on front page).
(iii) The assignment should be written in handwritten form and on A4 offset paper and a
hard copy of this written assignment must be submitted.

1. In a game involving rolling a pair of fair a–sided dice simultaneously, where “a” is the sixth digit in
your student ID after arranging all the digits in ascending order.
[1 + (1 × 4) = 5 point]
a) Write the sample space.
b) Determine the probability of getting:
i) A sum of a - 1
ii) Achieving a ‘doublet’, where both dice land on the same value.
iii) A sum greater than a
iv) An odd number on one and an even number on the other

2. Suppose that a company is conducting a study on employee satisfaction. They find that 70% of their
employees are currently satisfied with their jobs. Additionally, the company introduces two programs
aimed at improving job satisfaction: a wellness program and a flexible work hours program. It’s observed
that participation in the wellness program increases job satisfaction by 60%, while participation in the
flexible work hours program increases job satisfaction by 45%. Employees are randomly selected to
participate in one of the two programs with equal probabilities. If a randomly selected employee is
found to be satisfied with their job after participating in one of the programs, what is the probability
that they participated in the wellness program? [5 point]

3. A software company submitted a proposal for a new project. The company’s management estimated
a 60-40 chance of winning the project. However, it is known that for 80% of successful proposals and
30% of unsuccessful proposals, the client requests additional clarification. [1 + 1 + 3 = 5 point]

1
a) What is the prior probability of the proposal being successful (that is, prior to the request for
additional information)?
b) What is the conditional probability of a request for additional information given that the proposal
will be ultimately successful?
c) Compute the posterior probability that the proposal will be successful given a request for additional
information.

4. Consider a continuous random variable X, which has a probability density function (pdf):

kx;

 0≤X≤8
f (x) = 8k; 8<X≤9

0; otherwise

[1 × 7 = 7 point]
a) Determine the value of the constant k.
b) Sketch f (x).
c) Obtain the cumulative distribution function (CDF), F (x).
d) Find the mean of X.
e) Find the variance and SD of X.
f) Find the CV of X.
g) Find the probability that X lies between 7 and 8.5.
5. Consider a continuous random variable X, which has a cumulative distribution function (cdf):

1 2
8x ;

 0≤X≤2
1
F (x) = (8x − x2 − 8); 2 < X ≤ 4
8

1; x>4

[2 × 2 = 4 point]
a) Determine the pdf f (x).
b) Sketch f (x) and state the mode.

6. Friendly’s Department store has been the target of many shoplifters during the past month, but
owing to increased security precautions, 250 shoplifters have been caught. Each shoplifter’s gender
is noted, also noted is whether the perpetrator was a first-time or repeated offender. The data are
summarized in the table:
Gender First-time offender Repeated offender Total
Male 60 70 130
Female 44 76 120
Total 104 146 250

Assuming that an apprehended shoplifter is chosen at random, find: [1 × 4 = 4 point]

a) The joint probability of the variables Gender and Offender.

2
b) The marginal probability of Gender and Offender.
c) The probability that the shoplifter is a first-time offender given that the shoplifter is male.
d) The probability that the shoplifter is both male and a repeated offender.

Good Luck!
