THEORY OF ELASTIC FAILURE / STATIC FAILURE
THEORY OF ELASTIC FAILURE
However, a machine part is generally subjected
simultaneously to several different types of stresses
whose actions are combined therefore, it is necessary to
have some basis for determining the allowable working
stresses so that failure may not occur. Thus, the function
of the theories of elastic failure is to predict from the
behavior of materials in a simple tensile test when elastic
failure will occur under any conditions of applied stress.
MAXIMUM PRINCIPLE STRESS / MAXIMUM NORMAL
STRESS / RANKINE’S THEORY
Rankine yield locus or Rankine
boundary is square boundary
Example: Shaft subjected to combine bending and torsion

(Failure accurse)

(To avoid Failure)

Equivalent bending moment

MAXIMUM SHEAR STRESS THEORY (COULOMB, TRESCA
AND GUEST’S THEORY)
1. Tresca’s yield locus or Tresca’s
boundary is hexagonal.
2. 1st and 3rd coordinate Tresca’s and
Rankine boubdary are coinside
and 2nd and 4th they deviate.
EXAMPLE: SHAFT SUBJECTED TO COMBINED BENDING
AND TORSION

Failure accurse

To avoid Failure

Equivalent twisting moment

DISTORTION ENERGY THEORY (MAXIMUM SHEAR STRAIN
ENERGY , HUBER VON MISES AND HENKEY’S THEORY)
1. Von mises yield locus or Von
mises boundary is Ellipse.
2. Distorsion energy ellipse touches
all 6 points of trasca’s boundary

STATIC FAILURE

Example 02: A machine element is subjected to the following biaxial state of

stress 80 MPa , 20 MPa and shear stress 40 MPa. If the shear strength of the
material is 100 MPa, the factor of safety as per Tresca’s maximum shear stress
theory is?

Example 03: A shaft is subjected to pure torsional moment. The maximum

shear stress developed in shaft is 100 MPa. The yield and ultimate strength of the
shaft material in tension are 300 MPa and 400 MPa respectively. The factor of
safety using maximum distortion energy theory is?
