CABRIOLA

Cable motifs & Brioche stitches SKILL LEVEL ‐ MEDIUM

"Kapriolen" is the German word for cutting capers! And I was about to cut capers, when I found out how to
translate cable motifs into brioche knitting without using a cable needle! The CABRIOLA pattern is combining
two cable motifs with two‐color brioche stitches in a very effective way.
You only have to choose two matching colors of DK weight yarn from your stash and start a new adventure
about brioche knitting! The instructions for the crown are as simple as can be, but no less surprising!
The hat has a brim, is very stretchy, slightly slouchy and well‐fitting at the same time. It's important to note
that there is no 4‐stitch‐decrease to be knit. You can do it, knitters!
The hat can be knit in multiple sizes only by changing needle size and gauge; Block the finished cap over a
steep‐sided bowl or other head‐shaped form to smooth the crown.
MEASUREMENTS 17 3/4"/44cm to fit head circumference 21"‐23 1/2"/54‐60cm
DEPTH 8 1/4"/20cm
YARN Altogether 220yd/200m of DK weight yarn (110 yd/100m of each color)
Rose version shown was knit with Walkcollection Merino DK (225m/100g) in Blush
(MC) and Tieke Merino DK Twist (200m / 115g) in Kastanie (CC).

SoMe#1 (MC) and Malabrigo Rios (192m/100g) in Fresco y Seco (CC).

of working small circumferences in the rnd.

NOTIONS Stitch marker, darning needle for weaving in ends
GAUGE 16 sts, 20 rounds = 4" / 10cm in blocked brioche stitch
TECHNIQUES Cast on, k, p, sl1yo, brk, brp, brLsldec, brStst, brk2tog,
ABBREVIATIONS CO = cast on, dpn(s) = double pointed needle(s)
MC = Main color, CC = Contrast color
st(s)= stitch(es), rnd = round, RH = Right hand, LH = Left hand,
rep = repeat instructions, EOR = end of round
k = knit, p = purl,
brk = k the stitch that was slipped in the previous round together with its yo
brp = p the stitch that was slipped in the previous round together with its yo
sl1yo = work a yarn over followed by a slipped stitch by bringing the yarn forward
between the needles, slipping the stitch purlwise and bringing the yarn to the back
over the needle, slipped stitches and accompanying yarn overs are treated as a single
stitch in stitch counts
brRsl dec = involving 3 stitches, 2 stitches decrease slanting right, slip first stitch knit‐
wise, knit next stitch, pass slipped stitch over, place stitch on LH needle and pass the
following stitch over, place stitch on RH needle
brLsldec = involving 3 stitches, 2 stitches decrease slanting left, slip first stitch knit‐
wise, brk next two stitches together, pass slipped stitch over
brk2tog =knit two brioche stitches together
brStst = brioche star stitch, involving 3 stitches, sl1 knitwise, (brk2tog, leave the sts
on LH needle, yo, brk2tog) into the same stitches, pass the slipped st over (3 sts
decreased, 3 sts increased)

KNITTING DIRECTIONS The hat is worked in the round from the bottom up (brim to crown).
The brioche star stitch is used to create cable motifs. Therefore you knit 3 stitches
together and make 3 stitches at the same time. Actually it is a combination of well‐
known stitches: slip 1, k2tog, kyok and psso.
Work two‐color brioche pattern rounds in color indicated (MC or CC). Do not break
yarn between rounds, simply drop the previous color, leaving it in front and pick up
the new one without crossing yarns. The yarn in front is marking the end of round.
If you are counting rounds, count only the stitches going up on the knit column. You
have to work 4 rounds, 2 with each color, to count 2 rounds.
I recommend Nancy Marchant´s classes and wonderful books on brioche knitting.
Her online class offers more information on the intriguing brioche technique.
Using MC and 16" circular needle, CO 84 sts using the Twisted German CO method.
Do not turn work, continue working on this right side. Slide work to the other end of
the circular needle and join CC yarn for the set‐up row.

BRIM Set‐up row: Using CC yarn, with yarn in back *sl1yo, p1* rep to end of row, join in
round, being careful not to twist stitches and remember to keep the yarn over the
first slipped stitch. Place marker to mark the end of round.
Now you are ready to start knitting two‐color brioche in the round:
Rnd 1, MC: *brk1, sl1yo, rep from * to EOR, drop MC yarn in front of work
Rnd 1, CC: *sl1yo, brp1, rep from * to EOR, drop CC yarn in front of work
Repeat Rnd 1, MC & Rnd 1, CC ‐ 9 more times
Continue with the Cabriola pattern Rnd 1, MC.

FINISHING Break MC yarn and place on tapestry needle. Weave strand through the remaining
7sts and pull close. Weave in ends separately. Block your hat to smooth
brioche stitches and crown carefully.
PATTERN CHARTS The pattern charts are to be followed for knitting in the round, reading from the
bottom right, then reading it from right to left, up the chart, just as you are knitting.
