Website Activities
1. Use the first war website and at the top of the page is the section titled TRENCH WARFARE click on that and go to the page dedicated to
trench warfare. What was no man’s land? Describe the rat infestation of the trenches—what were the two types of rats? How would the
men try to kill the rat’s? Besides rat’s what were some other problems in the trenches? What was trench fever? What was trench foot?
Describe the smell of the trenches and describe the things that contributed to the smell of the trenches.
2. Read the two historians' perspectives on Gallipoli. How did the Turkish view the battle as a "Holy War"? Why
was the invasion doomed to failure?
3. Describe the battle of Verdun and the Somme and tell me who won each battle and who was involved in each of
the battles.
4. Examine one of Otto Dix’s paintings on WWI and answer these questions concerning the painting: . State five
things you see in the painting. (object, Shapes, Texture, Colors…) What parts of the composition seem to stand
out to you and why? What are the relationships between subjects and characters? Describe how the work makes
you think or feel? What themes do you see represented? What do you like about the composition? What do you
dislike? What is the title of the painting? How does it relate to WWI? PRINT OUT THE PAINTING AND GLUE
IT TO THE BACK OF THIS PIECE OF PAPER.
5. Examine the Armenian genocide by reading Armin Wegner’s account of the events that took place. Who did the Turkish authorities see
as internal enemies? How many Armenians died during the genocide?
