BIBLIOGRAPHIE
The intruder’s mind was spelling over with anger, jealousy, depression
and hate. She had born this man four children, worked at menial jobs and
suffered hard times with him. She had given him 16 years of her life.
And then, when he was earning millions, he turned on her. He called
her old, boring and fat. In a final rejection he divorced her and married
his attractive blonde assistant Linda Kolkena, who was only 28.
When Betty Broderick entered the bedroom early that morning,
Linda stirred and turned to her husband. From the bed, he stared at his
vengeful former wife and reached for the telephone.
That was when the gun roared and the bullets smashed into Daniel
and Linda. Broderick, 44, suffocated in the blood from his injuries. Betty
Broderick gave herself up to the police. The drama of the Broderick’s, a
lethal mixture of Fatal Attraction and War of the Roses, is riveting
women in southern California where the discarded wife is on trial for
double murder. The Betty-bashers argue that she was getting £100,000 a
year in alimony and had no right to kill.
The Betty-boosters say that too often men abandon their wives in
favour of a younger, more appealing model. “A lot of us believe he drove
her to it”, said spectator Barbara Harbin at the trial in San Diego where

Betty Broderick claimed she meant to commit suicide, not murder. “I had
no plan”, testified Betty tearfully. “I just wanted to die”. Last night the
jury was still out. Behind her anguished plea was the rancorous, bitter
story of a love which turned into jealous hate as Daniel Broderick, a
lawyer with a medical degree became wealthy and prominent in the
fashionable Californian coastal town of La Jalla.
As he rose, making millions as a medical malpractice lawyer, he left
Betty behind. He hired Lisson Linda Kolkena as his receptionist, promoted
her to be his assistant and began an affair with her. The resentful Betty
reacted by shopping extravagantly, sometimes making dawn phone calls to
east coast mail ordered companies. The Brodericks separated and last
year they were divorced. She was awarded alimony, but custody of their
children went to the father. Distraught, Betty began a campaign of
harassment right out of the Kathleen Turner / Michael Douglas film.
