FactoryTalk View: Failed to Load Data

Server (Result = 0x80070005)

Document ID BF15962

Published Date 04/10/2023

Summary
FactoryTalk View: Failed to Load Data Server (Result = 0x80070005)

Problem
I'm getting Failed to load Data Server errors on my FactoryTalk View graphics wireframe.

Environment
FactoryTalk View SE
FactoryTalk View ME
FactoryTalk Linx (Previously RSLinx Enterprise)

Error Code/Message
Following errors appear in the FactoryTalk Diagnostics log:

Failed to load Data Server RNA\\<Data Server Name> (result =

0x80070005)
Failed to load Data Server 'RNA://<Data Server Name>: RSLinx
Enterprise' on machine 'localhost'

Cause
Cause 1
The Microsoft DCOM Hardening Patch has been installed on a system with a mixture of workgroups and domains.

6/7/23, 11:46 AM FactoryTalk View: Failed to Load Data Server (Result = 0x80070005)

Cause 2
DCOM settings for RSLinx Enterprise Runtime and the Launch and Activation Permission were set to use
Default and not Customize.

Cause 3
The Client system time does not match the server system time.

Cause 4
Patching of the system.

Cause 5
Installation Error.

Cause 6
Simple File Sharing (SFS) is a feature introduced in Microsoft Windows XP. Simple File Sharing removes some
file sharing security options available in other versions of Windows. This helps Windows XP administrators
quickly setup folder shares.

Note: SFS is always enabled and cannot be disabled in Windows XP Home Edition. The below step-by-step
instructions explain how to enable/disable SFS in Windows XP Professional.

Cause 7
Windows 2003 SP1 has been applied after the install of Rockwell Software. Even when the Windows firewall is
off, the presence of this firewall is preventing the remote browse operations in FactoryTalk View Studio.

Solution
Solution 1
Rockwell Automation does not recommend mixing workgroups and domains. Please reference BF29209 - Error
80070005 After Installing Microsoft DCOM Hardening Patch (CVE-2021-26414).

Solution 2
To correct, set Launch and Activation Permission for RSLinx Enterprise Runtime to Customize then add:

Everyone
System
Network

Interactive
Local Service (for FactoryTalk View 9.00 or higher)
Anonymous Logon and allowed everything

To add the user in DCOM:

1. Go to Start --> Run --> dcomcnfg --> expand component Services --> Computer -->
DCOM Config.
2. Scroll down to RSLinx Enterprise Runtime:

3. Right click and select Properties.

4. Go to the Security tab.

5. Set Launch and Activation Permission to Customize and click on Edit ...
6. Add the users above by clicking Add.
1. Ensure you check all the Allow boxes for each added user.

7. Once the Select Users or Groups window appears, click Advanced at the bottom.

8. Then click Find Now on the right and you should see a list of user groups and you will
need to add the groups listed previously:

6/7/23, 11:46 AM FactoryTalk View: Failed to Load Data Server (Result = 0x80070005)

Note: With FactoryTalk View SE version 11.00 you have the ability to add a second instance of FactoryTalk Linx
which uses RSLinx Enterprise Instance02 Runtime. If you are seeing DCOM errors for both instances of
FactoryTalk Linx then you have to set RSLinx Enterprise Instance02 Runtime to Customize and add the users
as above.

Follow BF13452 - Getting general access denied when trying to browse remote OPC servers if the error
continues.

Solution 3
Change the system time to match.

Solution 4
Install the latest Patch Rollup from QA49264 - Patch Roll-up for CPR9 SRx. This must be applied to all FactoryTalk
Directory members with the FactoryTalk Services installed.

6/7/23, 11:46 AM FactoryTalk View: Failed to Load Data Server (Result = 0x80070005)

Solution 5
1. Uninstall all FactoryTalk View components.
2. Uninstall FactoryTalk Linx.
3. Set User Account Controls to Never notify. See QA53328 - Disabling User Account
Control (UAC) in Windows OS.
4. Reinstall FactoryTalk View, which should also reinstall FactoryTalk Linx.
5. After reinstalling restart both instances of FactoryTalk Linx, FactoryTalk Linx and
FactoryTalk Linx Instance02 Server.

Solution 6
1. In Windows Explorer, select Tools-->Folder Options-->View.
2. Uncheck the Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended) checkbox.
3. Click OK to close the Folder Options window. The settings for Simple File Sharing
are now updated; no computer reboot is required.

Notes:

1. The Simple File Sharing checkbox should be at or near the bottom of the Advanced
Settings list in the My Computer Folder Options.
2. Enabling Simple File Sharing prevents the ability to assign user-level passwords to
shares. When Simple File Sharing is enabled on a computer, remote users will not be
prompted for a password when accessing that computer’s shares.
3. If the Windows XP Professional computer is part of a Windows domain rather than a
Windows workgroup, this process for enabling or disabling Simple File Sharing has
no effect. Simple File Sharing always remains disabled for computers joined to
domains.

Solution 7
Turn the Windows firewall on, follow the directions in technote IN19238 - RSView SE 4.0 and Windows Server
2003 SP1 known issues, and then turn the Windows firewall back off.
