BI206 QUANTITAATIVE BIOLOGY PRACTICAL ASSIGNMENT 1 FISH

SURVEYS
Question 1
a. What is the null hypothesis?
 Ho: fish survey at Namena 2012=fish survey at Namena 2013
b. What is the alternative hypothesis?
 H1: fish survey in Namena 2012≠fish survey of Namena 2013
c. What is the response variable?
 The response variable is fish biomass
d. What is the explanatory variable?
 The explanatory variable is
e. Histogram

f. What does this plot show about the sample central tendency?
 The median is closer to the lower quartile
g. Variance and Mean Values
Year Mean Variance
2012 1631.917 137558.3
2013 1879.273 282946.9

h. Statistical Test used

 There are two number of samples namely Yr1Namena and Yr2Namena and these data
variables are paired and so the Paired t-test was used.
t- -1.3973, df= 9, p-value=0.1958
normality test p-value=0.3133 and since this value is higher than 0.05 meaning that the
data is normal and the null hypothesis is rejected as there is no difference in the survey
results of fish in Namena during the year 2012 and 2013.

Question 2
a. what is the null hypothesis?
 H0: Fish Biomass in Nasue Qoliqoli 2012=1950kg/ha
b. What is the alternative hypothesis?
 H1: Fish Biomass in Nasue Qoliqoli 2012 ≠ 1950kg/ha
c. What data type is the response variable?
 Ratio Data Type
d. How many levels of the explanatory variables are there?
 3 Levels
e. Run the necessary checks for determining the statistical test you should use.
 There is only one sample and so a single sample t-test was taken. The normality test
shows the data is normal hence its p-value=0.1602

f. What is the result of the main statistical test that you have decided to apply to test the
hypothesis?
 t=-34.267, df=9, p-value= 7.576e-11

g. Boxplot

h. Sentence of results
 Since the statistical test showed a p-value <0.05 (7.576e-11) the null hypothesis is
rejected as there is a very low probability of obtaining 1950kg/ha as a result.
